Bramshott grave yard
- Caroline (23rd Jun 2015  14:58:30)

Hi I'm wondering if anyone knows if there's a grounds keeper at the graveyard I was up there last week and it's so sad see so many overgrown graves or if anyone knows of anyone I can contact to help with the upkeep of them I know some are very old and their families have passed on but it doesn't look how it used to

The War Graves Commission look after their section. The parish council donate some funds towards the grass cutting and maintenance costs .

Grave yards are reckoned to be one of the best sites for wildlife if they are not 'manicured' throughout. St Mary's seems to have best of all worlds. Try not to think of it as being untidy, for some species it is better like that.

If anyone thinks it needs more work then I am sure volunteers would always be welcome!

Hi
Totally agree that the churchyard looks awful, you will see a few threads on here, regarding the state of the churchyard.
Sadly there are no monies available from the parish council to keep the whole yard tidied, as I was informed a couple of years ago, when I enquired about it.

However my 16 year old niece, whom mother and friend are laid to rest here, has infact over the past two days, trimmed the long grass with shears, bless her.....

I am surprised that the church of England ( a very wealthy intitution) does not have enough volunteers to keep it going? or a friendly gardener to charge a reduced charitable rate? I do not know how much they charge for burials there but most graveyards charge between 1000 and 2000 pounds for a burial.

Funerals might cost that but the burial itself is only 300-400. St Mary's asked the parish council for £3,500 in January towards maintenance, they were given £2,500 this year and £2,000 last year. See the minutes on their website. I think the parish council were pretty generous.

I am sure more volunteers could be recruited to help since it is linked to the Church Centre and they have a lot of younger people in the congregation.

Hi the burial was not at Bramshott, it was in East Sussex, and no the burial cost, not the funeral cost, was indeed over 1k, and permission to place a memorial headstone, a further 300 pounds. It appears that if you are correct, the Bramshott Church is cheaper than most. This was for my father so as I paid the bills I remember! The funeral costs were seperate, and a further 1k or more.

I too am very upset at the state the grave yard has fallen into especially the thigh high grass on the more recent graves.
We have lots of family members buried there and have encountered stiff restrictions as to the style of headstones permitted in order that the graves could be mown and kept tidy by the church authorities.
For many years the site was kept neat and tidy but latterly there appears to be a very reduced level of maintenance.
I intend to investigate, initially, with the church office, to see what can be done to rectify the situation.
I feel it is very disrespectful that the graves of loved ones are so neglected when, in life, these same people would have given so much to make our community what it is today.
