Catton
- Sarah Ghani (18th Jun 2023 - 01:05:31)
My grandfather Arthur Allee had a farm called Catton in Liphook many years ago. I’m trying to find out more about it, where exactly it was.

There is an Allee Drive, off Hunters Chase in Liphook. It is located where the B3004, The Headley Road crosses the Petersfield Bypass, the A3 London to Portsmouth road.
Old maps show farmland there.
This might be a starting point for your search.

Just a bit of further information, which you may already know.
William Robert Allee of Catton Liphook died 4th July 1934 in Haslemere Hospital, and appears to have left his estate (£2098.10s.7d to Arthur Joseph Allee. Transport Contractor.

Hello Sarah
I had the same problem trying to trace a smallholding where my parents lived in 1950.
I was fortunate to learn everything via The Heritage Centre ~ link from the Community Menu left on this screen
They could not have been more helpful

Sarah I moved into the Allee farm when my father came out of the army in 1946 . He was a chauffeur for Capt Allee before the war . He contacted Mr Allee and came to work for him on leaving the army. I was 5 years old Mr Allee lived in the farm house cotton the huge oak tree was in the middle of the farm yard we lived in a small bungalow at the back of the yard. My life was spent on the farm until I got married in 1961. By then Mr Allee had moved to Petersfield to run the abattoir in Petersfield. My dad moved into catton and ran the liphook side on Mr Allees death he had arranged for all the employees that were living in tyed houses to buy them he arranged the mortgages so my dad ended up with catton all the others had theirs Rodney Lock , Bob West , and one other can’t remember his name. A fantastic man in his time for liphook and so good to me letting me drive the tractors when I was about 8 years old and continuing doing a lot of tractor driving right through until I left school.Very happy days. You say granddaughter are you from Mr Bill Allees side? . Very short reminiscing memory not to good but hope this helps. Catton is now called budds house my dad sold it to Mr Rolls and his wife Jan when he retired.

Russ, that’s wonderful information!
Yes, I’m Phyllis Allee’s daughter, Bill’s niece.
I remember playing in the big barn on the straw or hay bales. I remember geese. I was born in 1948, and must have been under 10 when we stayed with our grandparents there.
Maybe we even played with you!
Would you be able to give us the address of Budds House, we’d love to locate the old farm. Where on London Road is it?

Yes 48 London Road opposite tower road. I think I remember Bills sister lived at rival lodge petersfield farm I used to go there to cut the corn with my grandfather driving the tractor. Also had a horse called melody that became ill I tried to nurse her back to health at liphook but failed lovely horse. Dad and the vet found the cause. Where are you situated if you want to know more perhaps the ED would pass on my email.

Thank you all for the information shared in this post.
Your question Sarah has led to some more answers in our family tree research.
My husband is a great grandson of Edith Jane Allee and Canadian soldier John Joseph Bleach who married after he was stationed at Bramshott during World War One.
Edith Jane Allee is a sister of your grandfather.
I've received some information from a granddaughter of Edith Jane which included Allee Meadow being given to the Wey River Trust and that the Allee family owned an abattoir. (I didn't know the location though.)
Edith Jane started the Liphook Woman's Own and began the tradition of placing flowers on the graves of the Canadian soldiers.
Would you know what year the Allee family moved to Liphook? Or maybe more interestingly why? (From what I've researched so far I don't think they lived here when Edith was born. Newbury, Berkshire 1896)

Yes Claire Findlay I remember that Mr Allees sister married Mr Bleach and that was the beginning of Bleaches Contractors road engineering in liphook. You must be one of the findlays of the florist shop in the square. Allees and bleaches worked a lot together with loans of machines. The abattoir was down further by the river on the left hand side halfway along the water meadow towards Tunbridge lane . I remember looking after Mrs Bleaches morris 1000 when I worked at mosses garage a lovely black one .
