Cowboy tree/hedge cutters have cut my phone/broadband line and have disappeared
- MikeyB (7th Jul 2023 - 17:16:16)

Beware of a couple of guys knocking on your door offering to cut hedges and trees at low prices. Our neighbours used them and now regret it as they cut through our phone/broadband cable. They were pushing us to have our trees cut as well but we declined.

They did call me to say they would get this fixed today but it hasn’t happened and they won’t answer my calls and return messages. Not sure they should be playing with BT/Openreach kit anyway.

Best description I have is one with dark blond hair, one with dark brown hair, small white van and a car. I have their mobile number if you are unsure if it’s them. No insurance presumably hence the silence.

Must be cowboys if they’re cutting trees and hedges during bird nesting season.

Bird nesting season?? Thought that was spring.

Nope. Main breeding season for birds according to the RSPB is March - August.

Also, worth noting that it’s an offence under Section 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 to intentionally damage or disturb the nest of any wild bird while it’s in use.

Local, many birds have more than one clutch a year. They start in spring yes, but don't finish in spring. I don't cut my hedges until October to be safe. I just know someone's going to tell me I'm wrong.....

Nothing to stop you cutting the average garden hedge any time of year as long as you check no birds nesting, it's only illegal to deliberately injure nesting birds not to cut your hedge. If you live in a conservation or specially protected area it may be different, there are all sorts of rules.

Some birds start early, some start later, some would have other reasons to start or finish even later. Then, if we carry on looking for reasons why we should act against out rights and our interests - there will be further restrictions: After the nesting season we have the fledging season, then migration, then hibernation, and time to nest again!
