The BBC Licence Fee
- Salty (12th Jul 2023 - 19:01:15)

Worth Every Penny ?

No doubt goes towards Well Known Staff salaries.

Re: The BBC Licence Fee
- B (12th Jul 2023 - 21:33:14)

Worth. Every. Penny

Let’s not forget that the media barons hate the BBC because they can’t make money from it (like NHS)

The same media Barons that have slung the dead cat on the table with this latest BBC Fauxrage just to protect an over sexed yeti for not handing over the WhatsApp messages to the COVID enquiry

Take my advice, stop reading the Daily Mail

Stop reading the Daily Mail and watching the BBC news, I guarantee an improvement in your mental wellbeing! (Spending less time on the Internet will help as well!)

Worth Every Penny for Whom?
Worth any penny for you? Great, you consume it - you pay for it. Free choice.

If it's meant to be desirable for individuals taxpayers (the License is a form of tax), then surely only they could answer that question.
If there was any genuine interest in what the taxpayers think, then surely the License Fee should be discretionary. Don't pay - don't watch.

Gone are the days where any listening device in a home meant a keen BBC fan occupant.

On top of the compulsory nature of the funding structure, the BBC had decisively affiliated itself to certain section and political dogma that is not necessarily a reflection of it's fee payers.

I shan't even go into the big routine scandals involving sex, money, crime, corruption, foul politics etc. Too filthy.

Sue- sorry to hear you think the Beeb is filthy. People all over the world think it is a great ,democratic, trustworthy broadcaster of the sort they would like to have. The way we are at the moment ie throwing out everything we find it convenient to blame for our own faults as a country, we will almost certainly get rid of it and be left without another part of our culture.

don't like the BBC and I am happy to not watch or listen to anything they transmit.....which makes it all the more galling that I am obliged to contribute to their funding. It is not as if they are of national importance like the education and health system that I am also obliged to fund. In fact why not redirect the licence fee income to the health service and insist the BBC survive in the commercial world?

Great comments everyone ~ keep them coming !

I think the BBC is a bargain. Certainly when compared to netflix, disney+.

It's worth it for radio output on its own and you don't need a licence for that.

If you don't watch live TV, you don't need a licence.

www.tvlicensing.co.uk/faqs/FAQ33

Just watch it straight after it's finished. No need for a licence. You're welcome.

- C (18th Jul 2023 - 20:13:42)

If you watch anything on BBC iplayer you need a TV licence.

Re: The BBC Licence Fee
- Sam (18th Jul 2023 - 20:36:32)

When we get rid of the BBC within years TV will be like American telly, 30 min shows take an hour as it’s 3 mins of show and 3 mins of adverts repeated over and over. And it will be way more expensive

Re: The BBC Licence Fee
- passfield resident (19th Jul 2023 - 06:02:10)

It would be like selling off the railways-we won't realise what we have lost until it is too late

Re: The BBC Licence Fee
- Rob (19th Jul 2023 - 13:07:12)

Defund the BBC !!!! An awful institution spreading media fear and false information to the people.

Re: The BBC Licence Fee
- Pete (20th Jul 2023 - 08:11:29)

Yes Rob lets defund the BBC and just let the Murdoch empire tell us all what to think and how to behave.

Re: The BBC Licence Fee
- Murdoch reader, now cancel me! (20th Jul 2023 - 12:18:11)

So you accept the BBC is left wing then? It's funded by the British taxpayer on penalty of imprisonment by the state, so I guess we need a left wing State Broadcaster to keep reminding us how bad we've been compared to everyone else, yes I know, I don't have to watch it, but does that make it ok then?

Re: The BBC Licence Fee
- Pete (20th Jul 2023 - 15:40:34)

Now what makes you say that Murdoch reader, because they don't subscribe to your particular view? Fact of the matter is that the BBC get lambasted by the left and right [generally the elements who cant accept that other people may have an opinion let alone be right] so seems to me they must be pretty balanced.

Re: The BBC Licence Fee
- Murdoch Reader (21st Jul 2023 - 09:44:40)

Hmm, maybe Pete, but I think most people if they're interested, see the BBC is pretty left wing, I'd be interested in an example of it being right wing! Although perhaps it's more a case of incredibly 'pc' and woke!

Re: The BBC Licence Fee
- Pete (21st Jul 2023 - 10:55:02)

Murdoch reader- Surely with a name like Murdoch reader you are proving my point, of course you see it as left wing. If you drill down into it their main failing is that they are so intent on staying impartial that they are pretty toothless when it comes to holding parties to account.
As always I would be interested in your definition of woke as everyone has a different idea of what woke is, seems like a general term for things in society that people dislike.

Re: The BBC Licence Fee
- passfield resident (21st Jul 2023 - 14:41:06)

The BBC isn't left wing, politics has moved to the right and the BBC has stayed where it was. The BBC is full of superb journalists who do their job very well-it's easy to knock it as an institution in the way that some people have to apportion blame when they aren't happy with their own lives.

Re: The BBC Licence Fee
- Penny Williamson (21st Jul 2023 - 15:38:02)

In support of the BBC. I know it is not perfect but its' overseas reporters are remarkable and very brave. They risk their lives on a daily basis to bring us news from all over the world seen with their own eyes. To name a few - Steve Rosenberg, Jeremy Bowen, Orla Guerin, Lyse Doucet. May they remain safe.

Re: The BBC Licence Fee
- Jen (22nd Jul 2023 - 10:26:32)

Well, I am a big fan of the BBC and although I subscribe to other services, I use i-player the most.

I do feel that the BBC license fee is an outdated thing now though. I would be happy to pay a subscription of double the amount of the current license fee for access to BBC channels and i-player (and would probably cancel one of my other subscriptions instead).

I understand that some people wouldn't want the BBC channels. Perhaps they should now have the choice not to take it up - or perhaps (shock!) there could be two tiers of programming, one free one with adverts and the other £20 a month without ads (and with other programmes not available on the free version)?
