Liphook Station
- AF (14th Jul 2023 - 21:20:53)
As you may have heard there is a proposal to close almost all railway ticket offices.
This includes Liphook.
The result will be that after 11am the booking hall will close, no toilets and nowhere inside to wait for train. Also nobody to supervise the hordes of kids from bohunt who are travelling in both directions, there's an awfull lot of them, and whilst most are okay there are a few idiots among them. I suppose we have to wait for a serious injury or death to see some changes.
However, there is a petition at the station so pop down and sign it.

Is it possible that the waiting room and toilets can remain open (pretty essential I would suggest) while the ticket booth is shut?
Being able to buy tickets at the machine or online is fine but a station is a busy place, there’s a lot going on and someone should be on hand when things don’t go as they should ( not an uncommon thing on the railways!).

To be fair the machine probably has more of a personality and is far more welcoming than the gentleman behind the counter who I’ve been served by on several occasions. I’m always made to feel like an inconvenience when I approach the counter and he always reminds me that there is a machine out front which will be quicker than standing in a queue! Clearly he doesn’t understand customer focus and securing his own position. No great loss if the ticket office closes I say.
I must say the lady who is there on and off if far more customer focused.

None of the staff who work at Liphook railway station understand how to provide a decent standard of 'customer service'.
It is rather sad, as I am sure they are lovely people. And ironically it is so much more rewarding in a job like theirs to actually be interested in your customers.
I suspect no one is managing them. It's almost like they have been abandoned. They are always on their mobile phones, or sitting at the back of the office. If they have to come out of the office to attend to the ticket machine or serve on the platform, they invariably do so with a crushing lack of grace or empathy. If you give them half a chance they moan about SW Trains as if their lives depend on it.
The one shining light at Liphook Station is the lady who runs the coffee van. She has built up a thriving business simply by being interested in her customers. The station staff could learn from her.
