- paul (21st Nov 2023 - 17:07:14)

Hi,

Nice atmosphere.

The Thai food in the Green Dragon is wonderful.

For food that is not from the freezer or deep fryer try the Deers
hut. The green dragon is good for Thai food. There is a good small restaurant in Liss and a good restaurant in Petersfield think called 8.

Think it’s a difficult question it all comes down to taste and price. There are loads of different eating places around . If you want a reasonable meal at a reasonable price Green Dragon fits the bill freshly cooked food and I’m told the Sunday roast is exceptional must try it . Value for money and not having to travel far I think is the thing.Anyway all to their own if price doesn’t matter then you’re spoiled for choice .

What are he best places to eat-out in our area, that are not bland uninspiring food restaurant/pub chains?

Hi,
Thank you for your replies, I look forward to current, or future recommendations.
Eating out with family and friends, is one of life's true pleasures. Also to involve the art of conversations, before it maybe lost forever..

It is much better than looking at plastic mobile phones, when socializing.

Guidos in Station Road is absolutely brilliant.

The jolly drovers hill brow - family owned great food and reasonably priced - log fire too.

You've all forgotten about the Kebab van

+1 for the Jolly Drovers, great Vegan options too
-1 for the Kebab van (was supposed to be about the best eateries)

Re: What are the best places to eat-out
- Joe (29th Nov 2023 - 02:05:07)

The original poster asked for inspiring restaurants do not think the kebab van fits that category and the Jolly Driver is just ordinary pub food.

Re: What are the best places to eat-out

Joe you recommended the deers hut which is just a pub food just the same as the jolly drover’s both freshly cooked food . Jolly drovers family owned and run only difference price deers hut very expensive for what you get. So you were not quite fair with your reply.

Deer's Hut Fish and Chips ( Cod ) £ 18.50

Jolly Drover Fish and Chips ( Haddock ) £ 17.00

Possibly you make a good point but have you tried the food at the Deers Hut or are you going on price alone? Also the Deers Hut is more local. Also the desserts at the Deers Hut are made there.

Not going to comment about who’s better just making a point. Yes have tried deers hut some time ago with friends very disappointed with price and amount I am not a big eater but my friend ordered Dover sole and he eats all over the country when it came he called the waiter and said is that it a very small square of fish a minute amount of vegetables £25 he said that’s a lot more than London and less of it . Waiter very embarrassed and gave us a free round of drinks I don’t call that value for money so haven’t been back. Personally I’m not a fussy eater value for money and service for me not Gastro food preferably cooked on premises good old English grub .

Opinions are fine, but whichever venue you go to, have a blast and hopefully come back a little tipsy if your not driving!

But may I just enquire what people think they mean by terms 'fresh food' or 'freshly cooked food' etc that is touted about?

It is my belief that no pubs nearby rear and kill their own sheep, pigs, cows and cod, then bring it straight to your table freshly pan seared with their secret recipe and own home grown sautéed frites, plucked that very morning.

Therefore (I'm guessing) as with all food, the meat has been slaughtered, checked by DEFRA, put in a lorry (frozen which is the best way to preserve nutrients) taken to a middleman who buys and sells stuff, who then flogs it on to the retailer (a shop or restaurant) who then put it in the fridge till you buy it, whereafter it is heated at 180 degrees to kill the bad stuff. Same with the fish and the veg too. Whether this is part pre cooked as is common (for health and practical reasons) or the whole process carried out by a stressed, screaming pseudo Gordon Ramsey type character in the back of the pub, is really just the only possible difference.

Unless you like a plain slab of meat or fish it's going to come with a fatty side, or a sauce that is where the real badness comes in, probably some wine or a beer, so let's all stop being snobbish, go to any pub, restaurant or kebab van occasionally and don't worry about the freshness (it will be fresh and checked by the state), maybe go for a jog the following day (and every day for the rest of your life), eat raw apples, avoid pesticide, plastic, oil, log burners, motorways, lino, MDF, acid rain, pizza, synthetic fibres etc, you will be ok, cook some broccoli and organic tofu, by the way I like them all, for me it mainly depends on extraneous factors like my co diners budget, whether kids are coming, weather (eat in or out) etc!

I did recently spot an interesting looking new restaurant in Petersfield, Clavio Lounge, in the pedestrian bit, was packed and I thought I'll try that one day, if anyone's been there I'd be interested in your opinion.

er

Clavio's should be right up your street - fine dining at it's best if your benchmark is McDonald's.

- Jimmy Riddle (29th Nov 2023 - 16:36:23)

er - if you want fresh and local (although its not that local or cheap) head to "Farmer Butcher Chef" at Goodwood, everything they serve is grown/raised on the estate and the taste is to die for!

Re: What are the best places to eat-out
- Local (29th Nov 2023 - 17:48:56)

Just thinking the term home cooked as stated by some food outlets does that mean they cook the same as people do at home?

Cooking at home means buying the ingredients and preparing a meal, now most good outlets that say home cooked do buy in their ingredients and cook it to order rather that buying it in the bag and heating it up ?

I think the pubs that are mentioned do cook fresh ingredients whether it’s vegetables or meat so the same as home cooked. The green dragon Thai do you can see them cooking in the kitchen. Had a meal there once and ordered banana fritters for pud they apologised for the wait because they had run out of bananas so someone had to nip out and buy some more can’t get fresher than that.

If you're looking outside of Liphook, 'Fez' in Petersfield is excellent

Re: What are the best places to eat-out
- Joe (30th Nov 2023 - 09:52:32)

The term home made implies fresh ingredients prepared and cooked from scratch in the pub “home cooked” could mean just re heated in their kitchen there is a subtle difference.

Re: What are the best places to eat-out
- Local (30th Nov 2023 - 11:09:30)

Yes Joe a lot of places do buy meals in bags and just heat up as you say but the good pubs around here do get fresh ingredients and cook from scratch.

Jolly drovers use the butchers in petersfield Morgan’s and source local ingredients and cook in their kitchen and I think two or three others do the same.
