Climate Conference, are we doing enough?
- er (30th Nov 2023 - 18:06:00)
I was listening to Radio 4 today and after learning about gay gardening at Kew Gardens (Queer Nature After Hours) and how important it is that our youth learn that sex in nature isn't fixed, that mushrooms reproduce in a million different ways and fungi change sex regularly, we moved onto COP28.
A worthy young lady came on and the hostess asked her if the UK was doing enough for climate change.
She assured us that we were, up till recently, leading the way and doing marvellously, but that sadly the matter has recently gone downhill. It seems, that for reasons unknown, the great British public has gone off the idea of driving electric cars, heating their homes with earth pumps, relying on windmills to power their homes, cars, businesses, industry and most important of all, iPads.
Well, well, well, I thought. Maybe if they'd told us we were doing brilliantly at the time instead of constantly whining about how terrible Britain was, glueing themselves to motorways, wrecking art and demanding we donate most of our wealth to India and Africa, we might have got behind them! I suspect the public has been turned off this self immolation precisely because, when we were leading the world (it turns out we've done far more to reduce greenhouse gases than just about any other country), our kids were scowling at us and calling us planet killers. Of course, I blame the schools on this one as well as the media!
Meanwhile it seems the rest of the world ((Russia, The US, The Middle East, much of Africa and South America) were getting rich selling the stuff, while the other half was busy consuming it in ever greater numbers, we however were actually walking the walk!
I wonder if now that the public mood has changed, they'll wish they'd appreciated us more? Let's see if the clowns staying in their air conditioned luxury towers in Dubai this month can square that circle, but I doubt it, they'll probably be too busy appearing in the media blaming you and me!

More there about your prejudices than about climate change.

Passfield Resident, I asked the question are we doing enough?
I set out why it was on my mind and a few of my thoughts and background details, you chose not to actually answer but to make a snipe jibe that I am probably unwilling to think it through or listen (prejudice). Since I asked the question in the first place, your comment was unnecessary, I therefore suspect you are less likely to be open minded than me.
I really hope to learn from debate and often do, hence why I always partake in civil, kind debate where I can, a little humour however is fine and everybody needs to be able to give and take a little!

People cannot afford new green tech
New elec car 30k?
Solar 20k?
Heat pumps new system bigger rads cold weather needs electric to heat as ground or air not warm enough.
Green tech will financially ruin this country.

Now that we have all been "educated" (misinformation rife on all fronts) on the environment: What happened to free choice and democracy?
Should we, mere mortals, not have the say on the matter? Allow the public to vote on the matter and make their own decisions.

A free vote happened on brexit look how that turned out for us.
We have to consider future generations, although unless every industrialised nation on the the planet make legislation on this matter, any effort we make here will not make a difference.

er-here's an answer. It's blindingly obvious that we aren't doing enough. The young people you patronise who are willing to go to prison because they are our conscience are doing something, but they don't have much power. We will have comprehensively ruined the environment in another 100 years.
