Learning to drive
- AF (31st Jan 2024 - 00:04:43)
I took my son out on Tuesday to get some practice driving to supplement his driving lessons.
He was not used to my car and the clutch so was stalling at junctions a few times.
If someone is in a car with L plates in front of you and he stalls you beeping your horn does not help, in fact it makes you an idiot. Do you actually think in your tiny mind that sounding your horn will help someone who is learning.
We all had to learn once even you.

As a suggestion, perhaps take your son to a quiet car park first, so he can get used to the controls in a safer and less busy environment? When a lot of us learned to drive, the roads were quieter, people seemed to have more patience and were less stressed. Most of us are not actually as goo behind the wheel as we think we are, so should we be teaching our children?
And I know this may not be a popular viewpoint, but over recent times, I have seen lots of "parental" driving lessons, that actually would give both the Learner and the supervising driving penalty points on their licenses!
As a supervisor, if an offence is committed, you can also be liable. An example of this would be if the Police caught the Learner on the phone...that is 6 points and a £200 fine. The same points and fine are also levelled on the supervisor.
| | Also, it is illegal for the supervisor to use their phone, whilst the learner is driving. |

For once I agree with AF. Be patient with learners. Everyone had to learn at some point in their lives.

Disappointing and unpleasant experience. I have to say, when my daughters were learning to drive and I was out on local roads with them other drivers were very accommodating. I remember my older daughter stalling the car multiple times and causing a few drivers to miss lights near Shottermill - but everyone was patient. This was in the last 2 years BTW.
Hopefully your son will have positive experiences to outweigh the bad. Best of luck!
