What a mess!
- Ian (27th Feb 2024 - 08:21:11)

I can’t help but think that the current state of our roads are a reflection on the state of our country. And it just seems to be getting worse.

I know there are some that keep banging on that the country is in good shape and that we are a great nation. It doesn’t feel much like it to me!

A broken government yet no sensible alternative, broken education system, underfunded healthcare system, dysfunctional postal service, the list is endless.

We are in a mess!

And it’s a democracy, if so we only have ourselves to blame.

Ian,
It's not that you're wrong about what you're saying there.
You've omitted security: the number one responsibility of a state is the security for its citizens. The UK has never been so vulnerable to threats from outside and from within.
It's all true, but too depressing to discuss. Hold our noses, hands pressed on ears, shut eyes and heads in the sand.

Well does anyone have any solutions that would work ?

One solution might be more frequent elections instead of having to wait 5 years. It seems pretty obvious that the MPs do not really listen to their constituents very well and even the ones that do are powerless to make real change. If they could loose their job in 2-3 years time due to underperformance maybe they would work better together. Also, some more important decisions should made by the public through referendum.

Constituents are hardly blameless either large amount of our voters are subject to manipulation by sections of the media, we need people whom vote to be trained up to smell BS.

Well some interesting replies. But it all comes down to us the people of this country we seem to have become lazy not willing to work our socks off for this wonderful country so many on sick leave young people not wanting to work some jobs below their expectations etc etc . It’s not what government is in they can’t wave a magic wand if the people don’t want to work money has to come from somewhere ie taxes so the less people working means the few have to support the rest. Yes I will be shot down but look at history you will see a full working public creates wealth for the country and that in turn a much better living for everyone.

At the moment not one party seems to have the answer. It needs a pm with courage to push through laws to curb high wages and unions trying to run the country dare I say take a look at the Thatcher era the country prospered as did the people of this country but again she went too far and we haven’t had anyone that strong since. So it’s down to us the good people of this lovely country.
