Tower Road - not suitable for diversions
- Phelim (28th May 2024  09:56:13)

Today I was in a near accident on Tower Road, which I just live off. Pulling out of The Mead into Tower Road and going up towards Headley Road I was faced with a large skip lorry turning into Tower Road and some speed. Thankfully I was far enough back to stop.

Tower Road is a small road with speed bumps. They are they to stop it being a rat run because people are too lazy to go down to The Square - or use the official diversion route. Yesterday - on a Bank Holiday - I had to wait for nearly 20 cars to go past until I could pull out of The Mead. This is actually usual during the "rush hour", made worse by parents using it to park while they take their children to school. This despite, during school time, it being used by lots of parents walking their children to school (yes I have seen near accidents where drivers have turned into Tower Road without checking for children) and there being a number of estates for elderly residents along Tower Road.

Please could people use the official diversion. Tower Road is not suitable for the amount of traffic using it, especially the lorries and buses that are now joining the parade.

The London Road from the Square is currently closed off due to roadworks taking place so Tower Road is the only way of accessing the A3, if that is where the lorry was heading.

A3 via longmoor road is safer you have a junction and griggs green 5 min journey come on people be sensible think of others around the village not just your rush to work/shops/gym/coffe break

Phelim, agree that Tower road not suitable, had a few hairy moments myself. Where is the official diversion though, all the signs point to Tower Road?

Re: Tower Road - not suitable for diversions
- Sam (28th May 2024  16:12:21)

Suitable or not, Tower Road is a public road so if a massive lorry chooses to drive along it then that lorry driver is entirely free to do so. Same goes for parking and driving along the Newtown Road with its unenforceable signs.

Am not stating either of the above as a wind up, am stating as am attracted to statements whereby people are wasting their time, like posting on this forum in the vain hope something will change. It won’t and tower road is going to a rammed until the operation in the square is complete. If you’re concerned about driving up Tower Road then don’t, take the official detour you are already aware of or park somewhere else. But if you absolutely must use tower road and or live on it then tough, drive slowly and take care.

@Phelim - a case of nimby-ism?

Tower Road is the official diversion route. The end.

Anyone know how long the London Road at the roundabout is likely to be closed - I've seen no notices & can't find anything on road closure online.
Thanks in advance

Phelim, I think you've just got to deal with it for a little while, it won't be too long.

Re: Tower Road - not suitable for diversions
- BK (30th May 2024  18:36:29)

I agree with Bob Carter, all vehicles are allowed to go up/down Tower Road, so for a little while you are going to have to wait for vehicles to pass you. Start being patient in life, it's not the lorries fault that it has to go up this road, the diversion is only in place for a few weeks.

Re: Tower Road - not suitable for diversions
- Russ (30th May 2024  20:47:16)

Tower road has a 7.5 tonne limit so how does that work. Are HH highways allowed to send large vehicles to tower road?? .

Re: Tower Road - not suitable for diversions
- Richard (30th May 2024  21:53:46)

If the objective is to divert traffic from the old A3 to get to the bypass by sending them down Tower Road, why not send them down the Longmoor Road which leads to the same bypass, but doesn't pass in such close proximity to a housing estate.

Or does a member of the roads dept. live on the Longmoor Road so sends it away from their house?

Just for a laugh, this is the marked Hampshire Council 'official diversion route', 20 kilometers! I wonder if anybody has taken it?

Re: Tower Road - not suitable for diversions
- Sam (30th May 2024  22:35:37)

HH have provided an official diversion, what we are talking about in relation to Tower Road has nothing to do with any other offiical body be that council, police or highways.

This issue is an irritation to some, and taking this irritation to any of those bodies will be met with laughter and dismissal, the official diversion is in place.

The real source of this irritation is drivers choosing to take Tower Road, they are entirely within their rights to do so... so suck it up
Also the 7.5T limit, again there is a 70MPH limit on the A3, does 100% of its users stick to that?

Re: Tower Road - not suitable for diversions
- Russ (31st May 2024  10:27:07)

Sam slightly different the 7.5 tonne limit is because the road is unsuitable for large vehicles causing damage to the road and also not wide enough again causing congestion. The point was are the people that put in these diversions up to the job just sending vehicles anywhere.

Re: Tower Road - not suitable for diversions
- Bobby Moore (31st May 2024  12:34:46)

Sam, you are wrong.

Re: Tower Road - not suitable for diversions
- kasima (31st May 2024  14:29:03)

Big issue - I wanted to go and get my child from school, but I could not go up Tower Road as there had been an accident between two cars. My child had to wait 20 minutes on his own in the playground. When are they going to realise that Tower Road is not suitable for diversions??

Re: Tower Road - not suitable for diversions
- Ann (31st May 2024  19:17:54)

I thought schools are on half term this week🤔

Re: Tower Road - not suitable for diversions
- kasima (31st May 2024  20:51:05)

I meant picking him up from a friend's house 🙄

Re: Tower Road - not suitable for diversions
- Joe (31st May 2024  22:19:56)

I thought you left him waiting 20 mins in the playground ?

Re: Tower Road - not suitable for diversions
- Sam (31st May 2024  22:54:54)

Ok then, tackle this problem and provide an answer that satisfies you, I want those irritated by the Traffic on Tower Road to provide a workable alternative. Let’s start it with a statement

(London Road, immediately in front of the Green Dragon requires works that will see that road unpassable to regular traffic for a few days)

1. How will you officially divert?
2. How will you prevent drivers accessing Tower Road?

Lets see how many reasonable and workable solutions are provided over the existing input that is limited to moan's

Re: Tower Road - not suitable for diversions
- Sam (31st May 2024  23:11:28)

I'd like to add.... for those not paying any attention

- TOWER ROAD ISNT OFFICIALLY PART OF THE DIVERSION.

- NO OFFICIAL BODY HAS ADVISED OR SUGGESTED THE USE OF TOWER ROAD.

Drivers are selecting Tower Road entirely by themselves, the offical bodies would never have suggested its use. Individuals are choosing to use it above and beyond what was offically advised and is clearly shown in sign's. Its utter madness your all scoring points of some random officials, its like IQ -10 sort of brain use, moaning at the wrong target.

Drivers are themselves selecting Tower Road, and to be honest its the quickest route so just suck it up and stop moaning. Do you want Tower Road closed to all traffic as a solution? for that is the only alternative that would stop drivers using Tower road, but then you would be in here MOANING about "why did they close tower road" and "my little jonny wet himself at school etc etc etc"

Get a grip of yourselves

Re: Tower Road - not suitable for diversions
- M (1st Jun 2024  08:48:57)

Sam is entirely right. Tower Road isn't the official route, it's local drivers using their local knowledge to use the road.
I haven't bothered as the congestion makes it the worse option, I used Longmoor Road and accessed the A3 at Griggs Green, much easier and quicker.

Re: Tower Road - not suitable for diversions
- AF (2nd Jun 2024  16:29:27)

Another option go through Bramshott.

Re: Tower Road - not suitable for diversions
- Phelim (3rd Jun 2024  12:28:55)

Rather than NIMBYism as someone said Tower Road is NOT the official diversion. The official diversion is up the A3 to Bordon and down the Headley Road. But people are too lazy to bother with it. How do I know this? Because I looked it up on line.

Today between 12 and 12.20 15 cars, a Fed Ex Lorry and an articulated lorry used Tower Road. The artic actually blocked the road as it didn't have enough room to get round properly. This is why it is not the official diversion. Thank God that an ambulance wasn't trying to get to Fletcher's Field, Candleford Gate or Greenbanks to deal with an emergency.

I have now got so sick of this I am writing to Hampshire County Council to ask them to consider doing something to deal with the rat run Tower Road has become before someone gets injured or the emergency services are unable to access Tower Close for Greenbanks/Candleford Gate and somebody dies because of the laziness of people.

Re: Tower Road - not suitable for diversions
- Phelim (3rd Jun 2024  12:39:01)

For those claiming that Tower Road is the official diversion route, legally a diversion must be on the same standard of road as the road being closed. The official diversion with the closing of London Road must be on an equivalent B Road, Tower Road is NOT an equivalent road so cannot be the official diversion.

If you look at the closure of the road through Lindford the official diversion was the A323 to the Longmoor Junction, the A3 to the Bramshott Junction, the London Road, and the Headley Road. Hollywater Road and others were "not suitable for diverted traffic". The road from the A323 to Alton via Kingsley is closed, and the official diversion includes the A3, the A272 to the Meon Hut traffic lights, and then up to Alton via the A32 and A31. So there is no way that, despite the wishes of people, that Tower Road can be the official diversion.

- donna l (3rd Jun 2024  12:48:53)

Phelim, we dont need a lecture. It says it's a diversion, so that is what it is!

Re: Tower Road - not suitable for diversions
- Local (3rd Jun 2024  13:35:46)

Sorry Donna no it doesn’t.

Re: Tower Road - not suitable for diversions
- Jim (3rd Jun 2024  14:30:36)

@Phelim you say "legally a diversion must be on the same standard of road as the road being close" - which law is that or did you just make it up?
