SEN Provision at Bohunt
- Jackie (25th Jun 2024  10:11:50)

My son is due to start year 7 at Bohunt in September. He is autistic and has some mild hearing loss. Have not heard much about SEN provision at Bohunt yet, so came here to see if anyone has any experience with it?
Many thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Just a thought but surely a visit to the school with your son is the obvious thing to do and discuss your concerns.

How strange to pick the school without knowing!!

I would advise against Bohunt. When it opened back in 1978 it was inclusive and encouraged people of all abilities and in my time in the early 80's there the were a few people in wheelchairs lots of people with hearing problems.
Sadly those days are gone, with the current headmaster who's a compete power crazed idiot only the perfect are accepted, and I fear in the atmosphere he has created your Son would struggle.
I had two children both on the autistic spectrum, my daughter went there and had issues, my son would have been kicked out within weeks and was fortunate to attend a specialist school in waterlooville that could deal with his issues.

I believe if you contact Bohunt directly they have support for parents with additional needs and may be able to support your child. My friend is differently abled and the school supported her with getting her child started at Bohunt.

To All - just for clarification, we have obviously approached the school about SEN provision and they of course said all the right things..... I was interested in people's actual experiences as I know these can often be very different from what a school presents.

Thank you for your replies so far!

Concerning to hear about the headmaster..

There is a free bus service to the special needs schools in the local area. Maybe these might be best way forward for the support you need.

There was a SEN meeting for all those joining in year 7 last Thursday, the invite was on the latest Transition email. I’m sure if you contact the school directly someone from the team would be very happy to talk to you. The lead lady is Kirsty Smith and she has been out visiting new year 7’s at their existing schools.

I hope Bohunt and the current head can identify AF and take legal action for their defamatory comments, which I will repost here so everyone can see the vitriol:

"... with the current headmaster who's a compete power crazed idiot only the perfect are accepted ... "

To the original poster - my daughter attended Bohunt (left last year) and they spotted she had a mild learning difficulty. They could not have been more supportive throughout, and she is now in uni thanks to the efforts of the school and specific teachers and learning coordinators.

Paul2 - it is only defamation if the comments are false. Opinions you disagree with do not count unfortunately. What's your experience of the headmaster?

I'm really heartened to hear that your daughter got the support she needed!

Re: SEN Provision at Bohunt
- Paul2 (26th Jun 2024  13:10:00)

@Jackie - AF's comment could potentially be viewed as defamatory if it was found to be false and damaging to the person it describes. AF has called the Head of Bohunt a 'complete power crazed idiot' and implies discriminatory acceptance practices.

I'm no legal expert, but AF's comments are concerning and I personally hope Bohunt and/or the Head take appropriate action.

You asked my experience of the Head. Again, never had a problem with 2 children passing through the schools a few years apart. Plenty of interactions with numerous members of the Bohunt team. When dealing with the school I've always felt the tone sets the tune.

Re: SEN Provision at Bohunt
- Jackie (26th Jun 2024  13:19:54)

Paul2 - I assure you, no lawyer in their right mind would suggest that AF's comment is a potential case for defamation. It is AF's honest opinion.

Thank you for sharing your experiences.

Hi Jackie just to let you know the bus has spaces and happy to pass their number on to you.

@ please pass on my email address so Jackie can be briefed on the bus.

People in buses always look happier than people in car's.

Re: SEN Provision at Bohunt
- Jackie (27th Jun 2024  17:58:29)

Sam - how about we go for coffee and you can tell me all about this bus? Or are you only this vile and cowardly when you are safe behind a screen?

Re: SEN Provision at Bohunt
- L (27th Jun 2024  20:26:14)

Bohunt has been great so far for our child (year 7) with ADHD. Obviously you know your child best and what will work for them.

Not all children with additional needs need to go to a SEN school as some people on Talkback seem to think!!

But if you like buses it would be amazing.

Re: SEN Provision at Bohunt
- D (28th Jun 2024  08:18:22)

When Bohunt opened what we now term "special needs" went to Meadows School. As for AF's claim of Bohunt having gone downhill, if the three part television series on the school shown a few years ago is anything to go by I think he's right. I was appalled.

Re: SEN Provision at Bohunt
- Paul2 (28th Jun 2024  13:09:08)

@Jackie - no problem, as mentioned I am no legal expert so I take the advice.

Can I ask then - if I was to say something such as "In my opinion and based on what I see here, AF is a blithering idiot with an anti Bohunt vendetta and is trolling baseless accusations on social media to make up for their sad life" would that be defamatory? Because if it is then I won't say it.

Thank you.

Jackie if you are a parent with special needs Bohunt has people to support you in everyway possible. Surprised you didn't simply approach the school and engage with them directly. Does your disability prevent you from leaving your house as I'm sure they home visits too.

Re: SEN Provision at Bohunt

What would a parent want to send a child with additional needs to a mainstream school and take from the other children. There are special schools set up to deal with children with special needs. What more alarming is there at now Syndrome children starting primary school and god only knows how the other normal children are going to learn.

Re: SEN Provision at Bohunt
- D (30th Jun 2024  10:13:53)

I agree absolutely, Sam. I realize it is now "politically incorrect" to make such statements, but that is why special schools were set up. So all pupils in the school could be taught on the same level without hindering the education and development of the more able pupils. The mixing of both levels of ability is only going to be to the detriment of the more abled, not to the advantage of the less abled. What is wrong with special needs schools anyway? We must all accept our own limitations. If I was given a choice between two books, let's say the adventures of Paddington Bear or Einstein's Theory of Relativity, I would choose Paddington Bear because I know the latter would be completely beyond my level of intelligence.

Re: SEN Provision at Bohunt
- Sam (30th Jun 2024  11:41:54)

There is no problem with a child with minor support needs attending mainstream school as this is where support can be provided. But it’s the children with Syndrome’s that need proper support and will take from the others which needs to be addressed. This if you have a child that has a Syndrome they are not normal I’m afraid to say and need to attend a school which is specifically equipped to support them. All out children need the best start in life and unfortunately some will only be taking to not much advantage in the future
