VE Day memories
- Fay Boyett (15th Jan 2025 - 15:42:40)

VE DAY 80th ANNIVERSARY 2025
Calling out for Memories of World War II

2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the end of WWII, Thursday 8th May being VE (Victory in Europe) Day and Friday 15th August VJ (Victory over Japan) Day.

Various events will take place over the country such as Church Bells ringing out, and the lighting of Beacons and Lamp Lights of Peace at 9.30pm on 8th May. Communities are also being encouraged to hold parties of celebration.

Here in Liphook we will hold a VE Day Fair on the Millennium Green on Sunday 11th May and the Community Magazine would also like to mark the occasion. Do you or your family have any memories or stories of interest about WWII or even VE Day itself? If so, we would love to feature them.

If you think you may have a story, however short, please email our Editor Fay Boyett at fay.lcm@outlook.com and we will do our best to include it in a future issue this year.

Have you remembered any family stories - they don’t need to be about Liphook families, as long as you now live in the parish every story is relevant. Did Grandad or Dad have a tale to tell? Did Mum or Grandma help with the war effort- land army, factory, services etc?

Just a paragraph, nothing long.

We would really welcome any stories by April 5th for inclusion in the Summer Edition of the Liphook Community Magazine. Pictured would be great too please.

Send to fay.lcm@outlook.com

Thank you

My late father-in-law served in the eighth army during the war. While stationed at Aldershot he received training driving heavy trucks over sand. This was done at Frensham Ponds which had been drained during the war. This experience was to prove invaluable, as part of the Seventh Armoured Division he served in North Africa at El Alamein.

My first memory is of sitting in the kitchen of our home in the East End of :London with my mother when the ceiling collapsed into the room. I was told later that a German V2 Rocket had dropped nearby.

I have done some research and discovered that it had struck the library opposite. It was timed at 4.04pm on 4th January 1945 killing 200 adults and 82 children.

I guess I was one of the lucky ones.

Well Paul, I guess you and I are the only locals with wartime memories.

I was expecting a fairly large response but can only assume time has dulled people's memories.

Thank you Gentlemen for your stories, just the right length, you are not alone, others have sent me emails with their stories and perhaps now others will be encouraged to send in their stories as well.

Stories received will be published in the Summer Edition of the Liphook Community Magazine, so it would be really great if your story could be sent by email to:

Hello Fay

I've emailed you directly, but wanted to add a note here that as part of a school project my son wrote to my neighbour and in return received a letter about experiences during the war. This included memories of travelling in an armed convoy across the North Atlantic while taking loses alongside due to U-boat activity, notes about V1s, doodlebugs and V2s, and taking refugee in an Anderson Shelter.

My neighbour sadly passed away a few years ago and probably cut an unassuming figure around the village - but was a decorated aviator with a brilliant RAF career.

It would seem only fitting to honour his memories but also his service.

Regards
PMN
