Hi
Yes it is true. The roof has gone lots of fire engines etc. Kevin got out OK, but the pub is still on fire. Kev has worked so hard to turn the place round and had succeeded. It took the fire engines a long time to arrive.

So gutted about the green dragon. I'm only a teenager but have been in there a few times with family and its always lovely in there. Just glad that Kev got out ok but he worked so hard for it. Looks like a lot of damage but I hope that everyone gives Kevin and his family support.

I was walking to the doctors surgery at 10.30am along the Portsmouth Road and saw thick yellow smoke pouring from a chimney.
No one seemed to have noticed yet so I ran round to tell them their chimney was on fire. Luckily a man in a van had already stopped and called the firebrigade.
The flames were licking through the roof in minutes and it was a massive fire within 10 minutes with hot tiles exploding onto the road - lots of people were still driving past us as we tried to stop traffic, even with horse boxes. Just goes to show that people will risk almost anything not to be delayed in traffic!
The tiles were crashing down all over the place and it was really dangerous. They only stopped when the man with the van (deserves a medal) blocked the road with his van. No police or firebrigade for at least 10 minutes and the fire had really got going when they did arrive.
It was sad to watch this lovely old building going up before my eyes.
It looked like a chimney fire to me and I'm going to get my chimney swept asap. My house is similar age and construction and we have open fires too. Very big wake up call to those of us who forget!

So sorry to hear about the fire. I've not been in for quite a few years but have happy memories of the pub in the late 70s and early 80s

What a terrible thing to happen to one of our historic buildings. Kevin must be devastated and sympathies go out to him.

Hi
Terrible shame about the dragon, very glad everyone got out safe.
I would like to say a big thank-you to Tony Rolls who stood on his own in the freezing cold directing the traffic up tower road.

Oh dear ....... I hear worrying rumours about my favourite Liphook watering-hole (particularly since the Deer's Hut has become a toff's teashop) that they are uninsured.
Not another Spaniards in the making........

- Kev (8th Apr 2013 - 16:25:28)
The Liphook rumour mill is turning once again! Shame we didn't have talkback when we lost the Spaniard as it would of made for interesting reading! Last week it was being said that it was an inside job all set up, I just wish I had moved my children's possessions and keepsakes in the build up to this being planned.
For the record the Pub which is owned by Enterprise Inns (which as a nationwide company, selling shares to anyone who wishes to invest at this bad time, will be fully insured and i can inform you this is the case) is going through a long and slow process of insurance details being exchanged and conservation orders and applications being made.
This will result in us getting some proper answers when all cards have been laid on the table and i will then be the first to inform you all of the situation. This way we should avoid any unnecessary comments being made that could well harm any people directly involved in this situation.
Drinkers from the pub are included in this but obviously the only damage it is doing to yourselves is that you are having to use other places to drink.
We look forward to seeing you all back there soon.

Kev these rumers will always abound, people like to gossip and surmise, I know first hand what it is like to have a fire which destroys your home and all personal possesions, I did not have insurance but Im sure the same things were being said about us, "insurance job" people dont know what it feels like to lose all the little things, stuff the kids had made when they were little etc, Id like to wish you good luck for the future, it takes time for the ball to get rolling, what with the permissions needed and the like but hopefully it wont be too long before the dragons up and running again
