Sloe Gin...in search of sloes
- crispin (16th Nov 2013 - 13:26:27)

Hi
Does anyone know of any good sloe bushes near Liphook? Very keen to make some gin.
To return the favour my top tip is to put half the sugar in and a whole vanilla pod (per 1.5l), it makes it less sticky and adds a great subtle flavour.
Thanks
Crispin

Search for 'sloe' in TalkBack. There was a thread about this a couple of years ago.

The best ones seem to grow on chalky soils such as on the south downs or around Selbourne. Unfortunately I think you may be too late as I was picking huge ones on Harting Hill at the beginning of September. I hope I'm wrong and you manage to find some.

Strange.......'Sloes in Liphook - by P Weyland (27th Sep 2011)' was the thread I was referring to - have another try.
Various suggestions were made of where to find sloe bushes locally.

Blimey - and I always thought slow worms were involved :-)

Cheers, Finchie

I have seen some on the lower path at QE Forest opposite Butser Hill as it is chalky soil there. Park at the base near the forest shop and walk to the right. I hope this helps as I have made some great Sloe Gin from berries from this area.

Been a while since I made a batch! The sloes are good this year due to the summer we had.

I've heard theres some good bushes over the back of Martinique Square in Bordon. I've not got around to making any this year though.

I think I also saw a few bushes on the road that goes up to Whitehill cemetery.

Wow! Thanks for all the great responses, really helpful.

I hope I'm not too late this year, I dod see some good fruit in September as well but I read that it shouldn't be picked until after the first frosts?

I'll go hunting this weekend but if I have no luck I'll come begging from you Maria thanks!

Once I've got it all made I'll offer to sell a couple of bottles on the thread for anoyone who's interested!

Thanks again everyone.

Crispin
