Local Treasures & Sightseeing
- New Family (20th Dec 2013 - 21:39:01)

Hello everyone,

As we're still fairly new to the area, we'd love to get to know our surroundings much better.

Would you mind sharing your favourite places. villages, towns, National Trust homes, gardens and South Downs walks/views?

Thank you.

Among our favourite walks we would include Waggoners Wells, just north of the village there is a turning clearly marked off the north bound A3, absolutely stunning at any time of the year where paths meander through wooded hillsides and are reflected in one or other of the lakes / ponds.

The town of Haslemere is ringed by National Trust land, non finer than Blackdown one of the highest points in Surrey. From Tennyson's 'Temple of the Four Winds' where there is a trig point and seats it is possible, on a gin clear day to see the sea. lovely walks and good parking.

Weaver's Down is common land and, being mostly heathland on sand, always drains well. Lots of footpaths and again marvelous views.

The Wakes at Selborne is a museam dedicated to both Gilbert White the amateur naturalist and to the Antactic explorer and Soldier Captain Lawrence 'Titus' Oates who so memorably sacrificed his life in 1912 in order that the rest of his party might survive. The museum is open all year round but to see the gardens at their best then summer or autumn is best.

And if you are looking for fabulous views at all times of year head south on the A3 to just south of Petersfield and you have the South Downs Way to explore.

With fabulous views to the coast from the high chalk scarps, Butser Hill and Queen Elizabeth Country park is a must visit with mies and miles of bridleways and footpaths to explore.

I have been walking and cycling there for years and years and never get bored of the constantly changing vistas.

The Devil's Punch Bowl at Hindhead is nearby, has fabulous views and has extended walks now the old road has gone with the opening of the Hindhead Tunnel. The footpath which joins the Shipwrights Way can be accessed from the Firs (just off the Portsmouth Road). But also go into the Parish Offices in the Haskell Centre along the Midhurst Road as they have hundreds of pamphlets and ideas of where to go locally.

The zig zag walk at Selborne is lovely and also nice to potter around the village after
