South West Trains - Important Update
- Keith (26th Dec 2013 - 09:23:16)
As today is Boxing Day there is no train service.
The storms from Monday have caused significant embankment damage between Haslemere and Petersfield. As a result there will be NO TRAINS between Haslemere and Petersfield in either direction UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.
A replacement bus service will operate between Haslemere and Petersfield calling at Liphook and Liss. The timetable for this bus service will hopefully be released by the end of today.
In addition, until 29th December major engineering work is taking place at London Waterloo with half of the station closed at any one time. As a result some services will terminate short of Waterloo and it may be necessary to change trains to complete your journey.
Replacement buses are expected to be busy, so if you can find alternative transport to Haslemere or Petersfield (depending which way you are going!) - it may be wise to do so.

Still no timetable but it is hoped it will be released later this evening.
Some trains from Haslemere will run only as far as Woking.
Latest estimate from engineers on site is that the work will take at least another 7 days to complete. This is based on the current situation and may need to be revised depending on how much rain falls in the next 24 hours. Engineers have completed some emergency work today which should hopefully prevent more damage occuring.
The embankment has been breached in 4 separate locations. There may need to be some work completed at night, so residents living near the line may hear noise, as engineers are working to restore the line to service as quickly as possible.

On Sunday 29 December, until late afternoon, there will be no trains between Haslemere and Portsmouth Harbour.
From late afternoon, trains will resume from Portsmouth Harbour to Petersfield, with buses from Haslemere to Petersfield.
Trains will still be operating between Haslemere and London
Replacement bus services will operate between Haslemere and Portsmouth Harbour but you should allow considerable extra time for your journey if you are travelling to/from Portsmouth as the buses will call at Liss, Petersfield, Rowlands Castle and Havant.
Details of bus times will be published before the end of Saturday.

South West Trains now say it will be January 6th at the earliest before trains are able to run again between Petersfield and Haslemere.
The damage is still being inspected but is worse than first anticipated, necessitating the full reinstatement of the track bed in some places.
The replacement bus service will remain in operation. From personal experience of the bus service today, I would advise allowing an hour extra on to your normal journey times, as trains and buses are NOT waiting for each other - so if either your train or bus gets held up, then you will spend at least 30 minutes waiting at Haslemere or Petersfield.
Once on the train at Haslemere, trains are having to run at reduced speed in places between Haslemere and Guildford due to other works that are taking place.
Please be aware that some of the replacement buses are unable to take bicycles or large pieces of luggage.

Just to add that the queues for ticket machines and the ticket office at Haslemere today were 'significant' as the buses on rail replacement meant a large crowd arriving at the same time.
Best add extra time if you intend to buy your ticket at Haslemere.

Thank you for the update. I will be travelling today. I bought my ticket last week thankfully. I assume there will be a bus from Liphook to Haslemere? I need to get up to London then on to Bedford.

Re: South West Trains - Important Update
- Keith (29th Dec 2013 - 18:03:20)
Bus Times now released for tomorrow (Monday 30th) and Tuesday 31st
Heading towards London buses will leave Petersfield at 10 past the hour, Liss at 22 past the hour, Liphook at 37 past the hour arriving Haslemere at 50 past the hour.
Please note that the train from Haslemere onwards to London will not call at Witley or Milford and will not leave Haslemere until 15 minutes past the hour and take approx 1 hour to get to London Waterloo - so allow plenty of extra time for your journey (so for example someone leaving Liphook at 0737 should get to London at 0915)
Heading towards Portsmouth buses will leave Haslemere on the hour, Liphook at 13 minutes past the hour, Liss at 27 minutes past the hour, arriving in Petersfield at 40 minutes past the hour.
There will only be one train per hour between Petersfield and Portsmouth.
If anyone is travelling really early, there will be buses leaving from Petersfield at 0530, Liss at 0542, Liphook at 0557 arriving Haslemere at 0610. Going in the opposite direction there will be a bus from Haslemere at 0535, Liphook at 0548, Liss at 0602 arriving Petersfield 0615.
Please note that buses towards Haslemere stop in Station Road opposite the entrance to the Station Forecourt, they do not go into the Station Forecourt. Buses heading towards Petersfield do use the station forecourt as they need to turn around.
All trains are subject to delay and short notice cancellation.

I hope others did not encounter problems with the replacement bus taking passengers on to Haslemere today. The 07.37 bringing in travellers from Petersfield (a main line station) and Liss was full by the time it reached Liphook and the coach driver refused any further customers. Very poor management on a working day for many. Full credit though to the Liphook office clerk who managed to secure a mini bus which only just accommodated everyone. I have complained to South West Trains but what will tomorrow bring?

I also found the updates very helpful. I also think those working on rebuilding the embankment deserve considerable praise for getting the trains running again - working in the dreadful weather conditions over Xmas/New Year.

I was very fortunate when it came to catching the replacement buses. The first bus arrived bang on time and the driver was very helpful. There was only one "hic-up" the driver missed the sign for low bridge at Shottermill ponds and had to reverse the coach back up to the roundabout!
I did make my connection on time, and coming back was fine.
