Sit-in protest
Conservationist Margaret Paren has staged a dramatic sit-down protest to stop contractors working on a riverbank clearance site in Liss Forest.
Mrs Paren, the treasurer of Liss Conservation Volunteers, took action amid fears that trees could be damaged and wildlife habitats destroyed.
She sat down on a mechanical digger which had been clearing undergrowth and scrub at Rotherbank Farm Lane, next to the river Rother and close to the Forest Brow residential home.
Her protest led to a meeting on site between councillors, council officers, Forestry Commission officials, nearby residents, and representatives of the development company, The Classic Home Company, and its contractors.
That led to tree preservation orders being put on some trees near the site – and a council order preventing the contractors from causing a nuisance by lighting bonfires.
