Would Liphook like a deli?
- Mrs (9th Sep 2014 - 16:45:02)

Just thinking about setting up a shop in Liphook and thought we could use a good deli/butchers. Please can you let me know your thoughts.

I have also been thinking about opening a deli in Liphook but can't find suitable premises. Would you like to share ideas and see what we could come up with?!

Could really do with a good butchers/deli in the village. - good luck

A proper butchers would be fantastic, but I'm not around during the day to purchase, so I'm not sure how often I would be able to visit you... In Northern Ireland the large supermarkets have he smallest meat counters, mainly because the towns have so many amazing butchers (there are at least 7 butchers near my parents, in a town of a similar size to Petersfield!). Wish it was like that here :)

Yes yes yes !!!

Re: Would Liphook like a deli?
- Nicki (9th Sep 2014 - 19:05:49)

Definitely!! I use the butchers in Petersfield regularly rather than buying the meat in Sainsburys so a good quality butchers in Liphook would be great.

Yes!! I've recently moved from Milford where I had Secretts Farm Shop on my doorstep.

Lovely fresh breads, cheeses, meats, olives in the village would be amazing. You could do freshly made cakes and sandwiches too, just a thought.

Re: Would Liphook like a deli?
- Jackie (9th Sep 2014 - 20:16:40)

Where would this be? The last shop(Five Petals) which stocked greengrocery as requested by lots of people here on Tallback only lasted a couple of months.

A deli with coffees (similar to the one in Grayshott) might work.

Re: Would Liphook like a deli?
- barbara (10th Sep 2014 - 00:19:50)

although it is not in Liphook, country market has a butchers shop now and 2 cafes! it is worth a trip. Vegetables are cheaper that sainsbury too.

Re: Would Liphook like a deli?
- Rich (10th Sep 2014 - 00:28:33)

Liphook is easily one of the best villages in Hampshire yet it has easily one of the worst high streets in the county, a few good shops with plenty of poor ones or derelict buildings. Have a walk around old Alresford near Winchester to see what I mean, both similair sized places, Alresford does not even have a station yet its an afternoon of difficult selections in terms of place to eat, places to drink, and beautiful shops. Why is it Liphook has so many empty retail buildings, take outs, and empty classic pubs? The place needs serious regeneration, either that or sainsburies and the hungry horse have swallowed the market so much that nothing else has a chance to compete.
It definately needs something, first thing being local people supporting anything new, otherwise we will be looking at more closed business relics in the centre of town

Re: Would Liphook like a deli?
- ian (10th Sep 2014 - 07:53:04)

yes yes yes get a good butchers doing good meat hot pies est bring back William dyers from cranleigh done the lot not cheap but as they say simpley the best

Re: Would Liphook like a deli?
- Van Man (10th Sep 2014 - 07:55:05)

what about the properties opposite the anchor? there is one next to findlays flower shop, then there are a couple round past Daisy's cafe. probably both too small.

hopefully this part of the village is on the up - if i was opening a shop there is certainly enough passing traffic here!

what is the latest on the development behind the kebab shop? i heard it was going to be a music shop. it seems to have stopped...

Re: Would Liphook like a deli?

Yes please!!

Re: Would Liphook like a deli?
- liz (10th Sep 2014 - 09:23:42)

Would love a good butchers in the village! A deli also would be nice but I think the butchers is most needed. Then a decent greengrocers.....

Re: Would Liphook like a deli?
- liz (10th Sep 2014 - 11:55:49)

Does anyone know if the former carpet shop opposite Countrywide is still available? Last I heard it was going to be a vets ... but it's still empty.

Re: Would Liphook like a deli?
- K (10th Sep 2014 - 13:01:22)

As mentioned on here before, working for a large local business in Liphook, we would love a decent deli/fresh sandwich bar!

Re: Would Liphook like a deli?
- Wen (10th Sep 2014 - 13:22:32)

Talking about opening a deli shop in Liphook - how about a shoe shop - people have to shop outside of Liphook for footwear - Sainsbury`s are very limited as to what they sell.

Re: Would Liphook like a deli?
- S (10th Sep 2014 - 20:02:21)

Yes yes yes! A good deli would be really brilliant. I think there would be ample support for it now Liphook is growing and high quality deli is hugely popular.

(can we knock the shoe shop idea on the head again though - we used to have one of those and it didn't last long! A small shoe shop just can't provide enough variety of choice to make money here).

Re: Would Liphook like a deli?
- andy (10th Sep 2014 - 21:12:56)

We have had all of the mentioned shops in liphook in the past and all of these have long since disappeared and with the advent of Sainsbury's the chances of any surviving are very minimal

Re: Would Liphook like a deli?
- Katie (10th Sep 2014 - 21:17:17)

YES! Great idea. Bring on the tarts.

Re: Would Liphook like a deli?
- Sceptical (10th Sep 2014 - 23:38:30)

We have seen the veg shop in Station Rd disappear years ago. The butchers in Station Rd closed back around 1994/5. The butchers in Midhurst Rd moved to Country Market and closed (before the fire). Is their really a sustainable market for a food retailer in Liphook. Sainsbury's changed the game when they opened. How many businesses have opened and closed through lack of support since?
That probably will not change. One stop shopping is a fact of life, though it is delightful to see the big 3/4 supermarket chains losing sales to the German alternative.
A deli in Liphook would have to have a particularly robust usp to compete. A butchers would not survive, sadly.
The other element in this is that landlords are looking for rents at a level that prevents businesses from being profitable.
Sad, really, but harsh truth

Re: Would Liphook like a deli?
- wendy (11th Sep 2014 - 10:35:12)

sadly, small personal shops don't make it any more, I well remember taking my list into the local store, and the shopkeeper would take the list from me, run around the shop picking out my items, then pack them into my shopping bag, then after a chat I would go on my way. It was a slower, but so much friendlier way of life. All that's changed now, I think another supermarket is the only way forward, to give sainsbury's a run for their money.

Re: Would Liphook like a deli?
- barbara (11th Sep 2014 - 11:10:59)

I agree, it is the rents the landlords charge for a small shop which prevents making a good profit. I would like to see a good organic shop like the Bran tub on Petersfiield here, which by the way is up for sale in Lavant Street. With new shops such as LIdl in Bordon or Waitrose Haslemere people who are busy all week like to shop in one go either after work at 6 PM or on Saturday. It is only retired people or others not out at work all day who have the time to shop for individual items, but would they spend enough? probably not. Add to that, lack of parking outside it is no wonder we choose the big shops! There is a deli in Headley which keeps going purely because it is a coffee shop as well, and does private catering too.

Re: Would Liphook like a deli?
- S (11th Sep 2014 - 12:05:27)

I agree these concerns are valid, but maybe a little pessimistic: I think it would be possible to operate a successful deli style shop here in Liphook but it would have to be done quite strategically.

Some of those shops that closed down when sainsburys arrived actually closed in anticipation of Sainsburys, so we don't know if they could have made it.

In any case, as someone pointed out, that was almost 15 years ago now and things have changed. There's a larger population in Liphook, and soon even more. There is a big market for higher quality, fresh, local, possibly organic, foods that sainsburys doesn't cater for, meaning people in Liphook are going further afield for these items. Don't forget Liphook does have a successful bakery that has kept going all these years.

I think a deli would be a good addition to Station Road; there is a big car park at Countrywide and if they were cooperative in allowing parking for local shopping I'm sure the increased footfall could benefit them too.

I think the market is larger than just retired people or those with funny working hours - there are a lot of young families in the town, with one parent being off work looking after the kids. There's also a trend towards home working, with a number of large companies encouraging flexible working hours and work-from-home arrangements, so people will be more and more flexible in the years to come. If the opening hours of a deli were flexible, maybe considering a regular later-opening weekday, then you could tap into the commuter market, and unlike a butcher or a shoe shop, a deli could easily take a decent number of impulse purchases by people passing on their way to the hairdressers / forthcoming vets / peep inside / countrywide.

It is obvious that there is a lot of enthusiasm for a shop of this kind in the village, the trick will be in identifying the different markets and finding a way of being accessible to them all.

- Valerie (11th Sep 2014 - 15:13:41)

We do supermarket shopping in Liphook but drive to Petworth (bread, pies, charcuterie, cakes/tarts), Haslemere (quiches, charcuterie, patisserie) and Petersfield (bread, vegetables) for specialty fair.

We would welcome a local deli supplying top-quality produce.

I would love to see something like this. I was gutted when five petals shut as I loved buying veg there. My partner is also hoping this leads to something! :)

My husband would LOVE it if a butchers arrived in liphook as hes a big meat eater...!

What about the old model shop next to the kebab house...thats a nice size but looks like it needs some work done too it...?

good luck

Re: Would Liphook like a deli?
- liz (12th Sep 2014 - 09:48:42)

Things have changed a bit in the last 20 years - not least Liphook which is much bigger. The success of specialist butchers in Petersfield and Grayshott - and even the little deli in Headley show that the demand is there in the wider area. I agree that rents can be an issue - however I'm sure a proper specialist butchers with perhaps a deli on the side would do very well in Liphook nowadays.

Re: Would Liphook like a deli?
- Rob (12th Sep 2014 - 12:09:20)

Sounds like a good idea to me. I was thinking about the same thing too. Local seasonal veg, good meat, and a deli section

Re: Would Liphook like a deli?
- Andy (12th Sep 2014 - 12:59:03)

The businesses mentioned in petersfield and grayshott are well established businesses and liphook hasn't had any of these shops for many years and the chances of them surviving is very minimal and as for the shop next to the pizza shop where are you meant to park ?

Re: Would Liphook like a deli?
- Iwik61 (12th Sep 2014 - 16:30:11)

Dear all,

Just so you know I have looked at setting up a butchers /deli and can't see how it can be financially viable.

firstly i needed premises that has good parking outside that customers will park for about half a hour and then move on. Station rd is not good as people seem to park all day.the square has nothing .

I needed around to finance 100k to move in to do it properly and that was out of my league .Ehdc told me the law has changed and all the internal walls have to be stainless steel floor to ceiling ,completely impervious to all water etc......

The rents are a lot and margins small and as previous comments are spot on about competing against sainsburys! Yes people are fed up with the supermarkets but prices still are at the forefront of sales.

I have been in the trade for 35 years off and on both retail and wholesale and it breaks my heart to see how all villages have their hearts ripped out but can not see a answer to it

Kaighins in Grayshott are good and certainly are not cheap and have survived but have no direct competition on their doorstep

people on here seem to think you can just open a shop whether it is coffee deli ,butchers etc just like that so they can get a latte and a slice of ham after the school run and park all day ,I would need a bit more than that to survive......

Re: Would Liphook like a deli?
- Sceptical (13th Sep 2014 - 00:57:56)

A previous poster mentioned the issues regarding the convenience of parking. Who, today, will park in, say, Midhurst Rd car park and walk to Station Rd to shop in a niche market retailer when they can park outside ANY one stop shopping venue instead. Think Sainsbury here, Waitrose P'field, Tesco P'field, Morrisons anywhere, Asda Havant and Lidl and Aldi local and expanding.

Be a very brave person with lots of funding to try!

Re: Would Liphook like a deli?
- JG (13th Sep 2014 - 09:26:33)

It seems that Iwik61 with years of experience has kindly done all your research for you Mrs. I too know from years of retail experience that what people say compared to what they actually do are two different things. What the most important things to consider are set up costs, overheads, footfall and money in the till. Please think very carefully.

Re: Would Liphook like a deli?
- Paul Ellis (13th Sep 2014 - 12:22:07)

It is 50 years since my wife and family came from London to live in Liphook and were a bit suspicious about what we might find by way of shops. Three very good butchers - two of them with a fishmonger too - plus a butcher occupied what is now PRC - and we had a greater range of local shops than we had in London. Sadly there's on one 'original' shop left now - Hiscock in the Midhurst Road - not a butcher, of course. But for a short while there was a deli in Station Road that occupied a butcher's shop owned by the Harris family. Like all the good old shops the deli too was killed off by the supermarkets.
After putting up with supermarket meat for years we tried the new Country Markets butcher and what a difference to the meat quality! A little more expensive but the meat tasted as it should do.I would like to think that some of those old friendly local shops could survive once more but I fear not. Happy memories.

Re: Would Liphook like a deli?
- Phill (13th Sep 2014 - 14:03:14)

Hi all,
An interesting thread! I too would welcome a deli and/or butcher in Liphook. If local organic produce could be stocked, all the better, and a good way to offer something distinctive.

Parking in Station Rd could do with improving- there is plenty but the 1 hour time restriction just isn\'t enforced, with many cars taking up spaces all day (some longer) to the detriment of the businesses. Easily resolved I guess.

Liz- I\'m pleased to say the work of converting number 32 into a veterinary practice is underway. The place had been allowed to become quite dilapidated and it has been quite a task to bring it back to life. All being well, we should be open around the end of October.
Regards,
Phill

YES i agree to a butcher shop in liphook..we have to many hairdressers here ((heehee)) i notice next door to country wide in liphook they have a shop to let.. dont know if that will be any help. :)

Re: Would Liphook like a deli?
- Mum of 3 (3rd Oct 2014 - 20:08:30)

Yes please to a good butchers in Station Road. I would be first in the queue. If it could also stock local veg/produce and seasonal extras (see Petersfield weekly Farmers market) then I think it would be well supported by the village, as well as by people passing through. I would rather pop in there eg for a pack of proper butcher's sausages than in to Sainsburys. Would be great to see the selection of shops in the village grow ever stronger as the population in the village also grows.

Re: Would Liphook like a deli?
- James (5th Oct 2014 - 08:32:15)

A butchers would be great if the produce is locally sourced where possible,
Also if it could be priced for the Hampshire pocket and not the neighbouring Surrey one that would be even better.!
Good luck

Re: Would Liphook like a deli?
- Jen (5th Oct 2014 - 12:27:50)

A deli/butchers would be excellent for Liphook. Especially if it sold milk, butter, eggs, nice sandwiches made to order for an hour or so at lunchtime - every working day including Mondays .

There is parking near Doctors' surgery, if the parking warden would make more unexpected visits to stop residents parking all day and all night, there would be plenty of room for bona fide customers.

Decent meat is expensive, but lots of people would support it if standard was high.

Re: Would Liphook like a deli?
- Jo (5th Oct 2014 - 12:35:13)

Whoever takes on any empty shops in Liphook, for whatever purpose, please ensure you take card payments. This is 2014 and not 1901. I fully appreciate it costs money to do this as I have a business myself for which I have a card reader, the costs are minimal however and the extra business you would gain by people being able to pay by card would by far offset the cost.

Thank you

Re: Would Liphook like a deli?
- Faye (5th Oct 2014 - 15:00:43)

Would love to have a deli meat at sainsburys is terrible I go to the butchers at the countrymarket currently so would be nice to have a deli close by. I can\'t see how parking would be an issue as someone mentioned as liphook is small so if it was centrally located I\'m sure most people could walk it.
