Alternative Vets
- Richard (20th Sep 2014 14:30:49)
Can anyone recommend an alternative nearby Vets to the one we currently have in Liphook. I fairly new to the area and the vet in liphook has so far really unimpressed with both the service and the pricing.

If you're able to hang on for a bit then there's going to be a new vets opening up on Station Road in the old Carpetbaggers.

We use St. Peter's vets in petersfield, they also have one in liss. We moved for the same reason and we are very happy with St. Peter's.

Hi Richard
I have moved my dogs to Amery vets in Bordon as I too was unhappy. When George retired the ethos from Liphook went with him.
Amery have been wonderful, real animal lovers, nothing too much trouble and a good measure of "lets see how it goes over the next couple of days" rather than a prescribing frenzy.
I am sure plenty of people are very happy with Liphook but when it comes to our animals we have to "feel" it's right.

I use St Peters vets in Petersfield (they also have a surgery at Liss). Have been impressed with their expertise, and their prices are sensible.

My suggestion would be to try St Peters in Petersfield, especially Billie or John. I think this practice does a very good job.

Hi,
Thanks so much for this, I have a heavily pregnant springer at home now. I needed the reassurance of a vet I feel I can trust right now, two visits to liphook vets really unimpressed.
Thanks for the great suggestions

I totally agree that St Peters Vets in Petersfield are absolutely wonderful. Especially Billie Jo Chambers. She is so caring. They also have 24/7 cover so you are not fobbed off going to another vets out of hours.
Can't praise them all highly enough.

Over many years of experiencing and using vet practices in the area with cats and dogs, we use Amery whose nearest location is in Bordon.
The main reason is that they have on-site emergency operating facilities. But in addition their staff have always been helpful, polite and knowledgeable.
In an emergency situation I think it is important to be able to use the nearest facility so that is something you should definitely check - if your vet is in Liphook it is no good having to drive to Midhurst for operations.

Another vet in Liphook would be great -- does anyone know who it is or when they are opening?
Have considered changing vets not because of service but the prices do seem to be more. Put off by having to travel with a wailing cat and the fact that my teens can walk with a pet to the vet in Liphook while I am at work.

Amery Vets every time.
Having had a menagerie of animals over the years, I have tried different vets early on but would not go back to any of them. Having tried both in Bordon there is no competition, Amery win hands down.
I understand that the new Vet in Liphook is coming from Chiddingfold.

We used St Peter's vets In Petersfield for many years till they kept sending us letters demanding we pay our bill. Which we paid every time before we left the vets after dog was treated.
Receptionist had made a computer error. 6 months after we had paid original bill we kept getting demanding letters. As I no longer had the original bill due to shredding it as 6 months had past, I Had to pay bill twice.
We left St Peters and went to The Archway in Dragon Street. Mr Cave and his vets are very good and much cheaper than St Peters.
If I had transport I would still be taking my dogs to The Archway. They were compassionate and caring with my old dog in his last few hours and gave very good treatment throughout his whole life. He lived to 14 years old.
So far I have not been impressed with the cost or the service with the Headley Road Vets.
All the treatment I had been doing to help my dogs at home was what the vet told me to continue with. I left with my dogs pumped full of drugs and was told to keep giving them paracetamol at home for a week. Did not feel reassured just left wondering why I bothered going to the vets.
Will be taking my dogs to new vets when it does finally open.

My wife and I have been using Total Pet Care in Haslemere for many years and have never had one worry about his treatment, nor costs. Vet Chris Serjeant is a very experienced and his nurses are second to none. Our elderly airedale is going in this week and we have absolutely no worries about his treatment.

Chris Serjeant in Haslemere, I used to breed cavalier king charles spaniels, and one whelping was not going very well, this was a Sunday evening, he came about 10.30, and helped me, then he had to visit a sick horse, he came back to my home at 3.am just to see how my bitch was, Icall that caring, he's great.

We are disappointed that you did not receive the service you were expecting when you visited our veterinary practice in Liphook. If you could contact me on 01428 723595 I will arrange a meeting to look into your specific complaint. Andrew,

Andrew,
Thanks for your post, I have changed vet now based on the suggestions and wont be following up.
If your looking to address any complaint you could start with the dozen or so other people here whom felt the need to seek an alternative as the volume of posts does suggest something isn't quite right.
Good luck with improving the service

We used the Headley Road vets for 4 years with our last dog and now we take our new boy. We have always had wonderful care and attention and felt we paid a fair price.
When my darling girl was dying the whole family received so much care and kindness from all the staff that I will be forever grateful. At the end, Kirsty came to our house and my darling was able to die in my arms on her sofa. I expected a huge bill and would have paid anything to make her last minutes just as perfect as I could, but the bill was less than half what we expected it to be.
Huge thank you from myself and my family to Andrew and his team.

- Phill (27th Sep 2014 12:33:15)
Dear all,
I am opening the new practice in Station Road and I'm pleased to report, as some of you will have noticed, that work is well underway at last.
It has been difficult finding good contractors for what is quite a complicated renovation (starting from a vandalised and neglected building) but it is very exciting to see my dream practice finally taking shape after years in the planning. I grew up in Shottermill so it is also a 'homecoming' in many ways.
I've done everything I can to provide a complete on-site service, with full hospitalisation, surgical and diagnostic facilities and out-of-hours emergency care for registered clients. There are separate waiting rooms for dogs and cats and separate in-patient accommodation for dogs, cats and rabbits, to keep our patients relaxed and comfortable during their visit.
I hope you like the result! Feel free to pop in to see us when we open (early November) and I'd be delighted to show you around. In the meanwhile, I'll try to keep an eye on Talkback and answer any questions you may have.
Regards,
Phill

I can only praise Andrew and his team in Headley road, Haslemere and Midhurst. Our dogs have always been given the best care and attention when required.

Re: Alternative Vets
- Mandy (11th Oct 2014 23:28:36)
I too would like to praise the vets in Headley Road. I have taken my dog to them for the last 9 years and cannot fault the care and advice we have received.
Last night I had to call the out of hours service and saw a lovely vet in Midhurst (not from our own practice) who treated our dog. Today I received a telephone call from my own vet in Headley Road just checking I had received the care I needed and if I wanted to have anything checked or discuss the treatment then they were more than happy to look at her for me.
I feel extremely happy to have such a kind and caring vet so close by who I can get help from at any time.

Well, I just recently went to the Vets next to the travel agent. Great service, much cheaper than my last vet and very nice vet.
So I will stick up for this apparently new Vet

- Mairead (23rd Oct 2014 16:04:11)
I too go to the Woodland vets on Headley Road beside travel agents for the past few years with cats and dog and have always been treated very well by reception and medical staff. Kirsty was very kind with one of our cats who suffered with cancer and had to be allowed to sleep - she was very compassionate and kind. We have dealt with a few other vets in the practice - Kate, Emma and Hans are the names that spring to mind. All practical pet owners and very affectionate with my cats and dog.
The convenience of being local outweighs the emergency drive to Midhurst which is the only inconvenience of the practice.

- Bob (8th Jan 2015 21:57:25)
What would you say is a reasonable price to have an injured terrier put down and its remains cremated? How about £237+vat? That's what we were charged recently by a local vet (not Headley Road).
No complaints about the service but were we overcharged?

Re: Alternative Vets
- carole west (9th Jan 2015 12:03:12)
I am saddened to see complaints about a praactice that has been around in the area for many years first starting with George`s father Aubrey. They were our family vet and they still are to this day.
I do have a personality clash with one of the vets within the practice and it is documented that unless an emergency I will not see them. As for prices all vets within our area have similar overheads and although prices will vary slightly depending on the drug companys cost there should only be a few pounds in the bills.
If you feel it is too high question it. Out of courtesy if one has an issue be it costing or personality or treatment then it should be discussed with Andrew first, if still not satisfied then change vets, all this rumbling on does no one any favours.

Re: Alternative Vets
- Jay W (9th Jan 2015 13:26:24)
Hi Bob,
Sorry to hear about your terrier. Just a thought, does the vet actually deal with the cremation as well? Maybe most of the fees are down to that rather than the work by the vet?
You should ask for an itemised bill.
Glad to see it wasn't the vets in Headley Road you are talking about and, to be fair, you didn't mention which ones - just raised the point (I think the previous poster may have misread your comment).

Re: Alternative Vets
- Bob (9th Jan 2015 15:04:31)
Carole, I understand your concern and agree with you. Note that I did not name the vet concerned but pointed out that it was not the one in Headley Road.
I asked the question because there does not seem to be any guidance available on prices.
It's not like buying a domestic appliance and you can't really ask for quotes like you would for building work. Instead, with the urgency of the matter, you have to accept what you are told.

I have to say that my own experience of Woodland Vets in Headley Road has been nothing but positive. Our dear family dog was very poorly just over a year ago and had to be put to sleep last year.
The care and sensitivity Kate gave both our family and our dog was amazing. I can't praise Kate highly enough.

Re: Alternative Vets
- Christine (11th Jan 2015 15:48:36)
I am truly amazed at what has been said in this thread.
I have used Woodlands on the Headley Road, & also their surgery in Midhurst, for at least the last 25 years for my various dogs during their lives & deaths & have never had cause to complain about the service, charges or people.
Andy, Kate, Nicolette & the other lady receptionist have all recently spent an inordinate amount of time in helping me with my newly rescued & neurotic Boy & I cannot fault them.
Yes, veterinary fees are expensive generally, but that is all part of having pets. As with any other service, if you have a problem with something say so &, whatever it is, it can be sorted out - nothing is irreparable.

Re: Alternative Vets
- Nicks (13th Jan 2015 18:27:01)
Bob, So sorry to hear about your animal.
I work in a vet practice but not in this area. Re that cost - it really depends what sort of cremation your animal had. If you chose an individual cremation with an urn from the brochure they showed you, then yes, it can be that expensive. The larger the animal the more anaesthetic is used, so that is also more expensive. Communal cremations cost a lot less, but you don't get the ashes returned.
Hope that helps...

Nice to see a vet offering after hours service as I recently had to use the emergency vets in Farnham 9.30 at night I was charged £120.00 for the consultation and treatment on top which was another 75.00 .
Nothing you can do about that as you do your best for your animals but had no choice. I for one will be signing up

Hi
I too have been using the vets in Headley Rd (started in Midhurst until we moved here to Liphook). I have used the practice for the last 6 years or so and have found them absolutely fine. I can't compare prices (I have not looked at any other vets) but I have found that they allow me to make the choices and never encourage the most expensive options (actually usually the contrary).
I like all the vets and nurses and other staff - they obviously love animals and care a great deal about their work.
Cheers
Jacqui

Hi Tracy,
As the owner of the surgery , I have to agree, it is taking a long time! It was a very neglected property and the renovation has involved many different contractors. I\'m determined to get it just right though.
I\'m delighted to say we will be holding our Open Day on Sat 11th April when you can come and meet us all and take a look around. Anyone registering their pets on the day will be entered into a prize draw. We start treating patients on Monday 13th April- I cannot wait!
Regards,
Phill

Hi Tracy,
We'll be open from 11am until 4pm on Sat 11th April. Please note we can't treat any animals until Monday 13th although dogs are of course welcome to look around too (apart from the cat-only areas which will always be exclusively for our feline friends).
Hope to see you then!

Phill

Phill, are you an independent practice or are you part of/affiliated to a company like CVS?
We're moving to Liphook this week and will be looking to register our cat somewhere!
I only ask as we currently use the Healthy Pet Club scheme and so I could just transfer over if so, if not it's not a problem as we'd still like to register with you as a handy local vet! :)

Re: Alternative Vets

Hi Jonathan,
Welcome to Liphook! I hope the move goes/is going/went smoothly.
Many thanks for your interest in Small World. We are an independent practice, not part of a group or chain, so genuinely 'local'.
We'd love to see you and your cats so do please drop in on our open day on the 11th April and say hello. Also, if you register on the day, you could win £100 of vouchers in our prize draw!
Regards,
Phill
