FM Reception
- Andy (5th Nov 2015 - 15:48:57)

Is anyone else experiencing an echo / skip effect whilst listening to any FM stations in the area? It goes away as you drive away from Liphook and is really quite annoying. I've noticed it in other cars as well so it's not a fault with my particular radio.

I have! On DAB - it's a real first world problem but it's very annoying!

Me too. Radio stations like radio 2 which used to be perfectly tuned in on my car radio and worked in Liphook haven't worked in the last few months and they won't retune in until i get towards Hindhead up the A3.
Assumed it was just my old car!

Me too ! Last time I drove to Southampton I could barely get any reception at all on any station & often the same locally but not always . I too thought was a problem just with my own car radio .

I think you will find it is to do with the 4G mobile system now being turned on in the area. If it affects your TV signal, you can get an in-line filter and it may also work on a car radio but not sure.

Unless this is a temporary phenomenon during the process of switching on 4g in this area then I don't think JP is correct. Otherwise, this would be happening wherever I drive in the country where there is 4g reception and it's not. FM reception for me is fine other than in the immediate area of Liphook.

My car radio is rubbish only when I plug my phone in to charge...

Re: FM Reception

In response to Andy. This is affecting all areas of the country and that is why the filter was designed but you should respect Andy's views that I am wrong as I am only an electronics engineer specializing in RF so up to you. I was only trying to help so will not add any more advice as he may know better.

Re: FM Reception

Apologies JP, I was not trying to undermine what you said and you may well be right. However, I have been doing a fair amount of driving recently around the country and, so far, I have only ever experienced this phenomenon in Liphook. I did do some research before posting this and found that "FM radio will not be affected by 4G at 800 MHz". However, there is a possibility that freeview reception could be affected by 4g, although that's a different thing from FM radio from what I can determine.

Re: FM Reception
- Andy (12th Nov 2015 - 10:55:15)

After some highly scientific research driving up and down the old and new A3 it seems that the jumping / echoing occurs as the radio switches frequency from 88.5 to 89.5 and 89.1 FM. This didn't happen as little as 2 months ago so I would if something has changed with the FM transmitters in the area?
