Dog rehoming
- MT (9th Jan 2016  16:16:26)

Can anyone recommend local rehoming centres for dogs please. Looking to give a loving home to an older small dog for company and walks. Experienced dog owner. Thanks

Hi, I have been working with a lovely lady called Christine Blackburn who is part of a dog re-homing organisation.
I have her email if you would like it but can not remember the name of the charity!
I have a 4 year old small Jack Russell bitch that Christine is helping me find a home for. I don't know if you would be interested in her!
My email is: rachel.j.stephens@googlemail.com

Thanks for your reply Rachel. The dog would be for my mother. I have a 6 year old Jack Russell myself and know how Iively and challenging they can be! I think a more placid breed is what we would be looking for. Unfortunately, most rehoming centres have larger breeds, Staffies or Jack Russell types on offer. I'm sure the right match will come along. Any ideas are welcome.

Hi there are quite a lot of small dogs homes which advertise their dogs on twitter, as does the Hampshire dog warden, he always puts the dogs which need re homing on twitter.

It is tricky. It took us months of travelling each weekend between the RSPCA at Millbrook and Battersea dogs home in Egham/Windsor before we settled on our dog. You are right that they have a lot of Staffordshire’s – but they do regularly have lots of others or every breed and Heinz 57 varieties. They update their websites every day.

There is a great place in Guildford (Normandy) and you can go and have a look around there as many times as you like. They are also desperate for volunteers just like every other dog charity out there. They rescue dogs from Romanian kill-shelters before they are to be gassed en-mass.

By chance, we found that Irish Retriever Rescue (who rescue Labradors and Retrievers from Ireland) had a foster family looking after a litter in Grayshott. http://www.irishretrieverrescue.com In the end we had one of these so didn’t get one from B.D.H. or the RSPCA after all. They have a few that need homes right now but I don’t know there individual locations as they are put with foster families who care for them until their ‘forever homes’ are found.

Good luck with the rescue. The right dog usually chooses you rather thant he other way around.

Blue cross at Southampton had a stall at 2015 LiDBA bike ride appealing for forever homes and dog fosterers. A friend of mine fostered at first but fell in love with the dog so for her it was quite a good way of trying before buying, so to speak.

Thanks to all. I have spent the weekend looking online at Battersea Old Windsor, Dogs Trust and Blue Cross. Will continue on my quest. There is a little pooch out there somewhere waiting for a loving home. Any further suggestions would be appreciated.

There is a fantastic dog rescue in Wales called Many Tears who send their dogs all over the country to foster homes. You can go on their website and enter your postcode and find dogs being fostered nearby. The advantage is that these fostered dogs become well known and loved by the fosterers who can then give good advice about the dog's temperament, needs, likes etc. I just wish I was able to re home them all!!!

we got our Labrador cross through chichester dog rescue .
www.cddrs.co.uk/...

they came out to see that our garden was secure. asked what sort of dog we where looking for . then sent us to the nearest kennels.
they wanted a donation from £20 for our new dog.
they even lent us a lead as we did not expect to be able to take our dog home with us straight away.
after visiting the local RSPCA rescue kennels I would not rescue a dog from them. I would definitely rescue another dog through Chichester dog rescue.
They want their dogs to find a loving home as quickly as possible.

good luck with your finding a new dog. I firmly believe the right dog will find you at the right time. As this is how my dogs have found me.

What about re-homing an ex racing greyhound? They are quite lazy, placid and don't take up much room? Met some lovely ones when we used to volunteer walk at Rake . Again you could try before you buy and its not too far to travel.

Have met some around the village and they are, without exception, gorgeous. We didn't get one ourselves as we had cats and wanted more energetic dog (at the time).

We rehomed our dog privately from the internet after a lot of research.

Good luck - the right one is worth waiting for.

I will highly recommend many tears animal rescue. We have 3 dogs 2 are from many tears and they are fantastic. Homes are vetted and dogs placed accordingly to their needs. Foster carers are all over the country so finding a dog suitable for you means you don't necessarily need to travel far. Praise to you for wanting to adopt a dog as there are so many looking for love. Good luck in your search. x

Many thanks for all of the comments posted. I have looked at all of the suggested websites and am taking mum to Battersea Dogs at Old Windsor next weekend to have a look. So many dogs needing a home. So sad. Wish I could adopt again myself but where would it end...I'd have to buy a farmstead!! As many have said, the right dog is out there somewhere and waiting for us to arrive.

T may be worth looking at Yorkshire terrier and toy breed rescue online. There are many dogs in foster which are proven in a home setting which is reassuring for an older person. Good luck with your search, heart breaking when you see so many animals in rescue centres ( and they are the lucky ones!)
