Couch to 5K Running Group
- Daniel l Allaway (13th Aug 2018  16:50:16)

Couch to 5k Group Starting in September

Have you been inspired by the athletics - do you want to lose weight - do you want to improve your fitness but don't know where to start?

Having run 4 successful Couch to 5k programs in the last two years I will be running another program in Liphook starting on September 3rd, meeting on Monday and Wednesday evenings at 6:30pm.

This group will get you from not running at all to running a 5k in 11 weeks.
The group will start with run and walk rests over the first few weeks, building up over the 11 weeks to complete a 5k.

I am a qualified UK Athletics running coach who is insured and has the relevant licence to coach.

Only 15 places available.

For more information:

Please contact Daniel at couchto5k@hotmail.com

Is there a park run we could go to once we are up to 5km ?

Re: Couch to 5K Running Group
- Helen (13th Aug 2018  23:22:51)

The 2 closest Park Runs to Liphook are Alice Holt and the new one in Bordon Hogmoor Enclosure.

- Daniel (14th Aug 2018  09:00:01)

Yes we will finish with a parkrun at the end of the 11 week course it’s a great way of achieving the 5k goal.

- Jess (20th Aug 2018  10:13:20)

Hello,

I’m interested. Is there an age limit for taking part? I’m not really that fit anymore and haven’t exercised in a while.

Would this course be appropriate for me?

Thank you.

Re: Couch to 5K Running Group
- Daniel (20th Aug 2018  23:17:53)

Hi jess
The course is for any age, I’ve just had a lady join up who is 69, most people on the course will be joining to get some exercise, so not to worry if your worried about not being fit, the purpose of the course is to get you from not running to
running 5k in 11 weeks.

Re: Couch to 5K Running Group
- Dawn Hoskins (21st Aug 2018  19:19:10)

Can someone who knows how much this costs please let us know.
I have sent an email about the prices - but not had any reply?

Re: Couch to 5K Running Group
- laura (22nd Aug 2018  21:23:36)

I have done this course before, fantastic coach. I loved being part of a group working together to reach the same goal. Well worth doing.

Re: Couch to 5K Running Group
- Dawn Hoskins (23rd Aug 2018  17:56:06)

How much was it Laura?

Re: Couch to 5K Running Group
- Molly (23rd Aug 2018  18:52:56)

Ditto- I would like to know how much before signing up. Sounds a great idea

Re: Couch to 5K Running Group
- Laura (23rd Aug 2018  21:51:55)

As it says if you email Dan he will send you the details. There is no obligation to sign up once you get details. Course may be a different price from when I did it.

Re: Couch to 5K Running Group
- Daniel (23rd Aug 2018  22:04:12)

Hi Molly
No need to sign up, but for full course details start time, start place, days of the week we meet, info about the course and the cost, email me at couchto5k@hotmail.com
That’s the best way to find out if you think the course is for you, it’s very reasonable priced as well.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Re: Couch to 5K Running Group
- Daniel (25th Aug 2018  10:19:10)

With just over a week to go I still have a few places available if interested please contact me
couchto5k@hotmail.com

Re: Couch to 5K Running Group
- Dawn Hoskins (28th Aug 2018  13:10:31)

Laura - I did email and ask for the price - but he didn't tell me!

I am not in any way saying that it isn't a great thing to do. Getting fit is always a good thing.

But please - just tell us the cost up front. Why is it a secret? I don't understand?

Re: Couch to 5K Running Group
- Daniel (28th Aug 2018  17:17:14)

Hi Dawn
I did respond to you at the email address you provided, asking you to contact me for further details if you were genuinely interested in joining, as you haven’t replied I took this as you were no longer interested, if your still keen then I will forward all the information on to you about the course if you email on couchto5k@hotmail.com

Re: Couch to 5K Running Group
- Casey (28th Aug 2018  17:27:04)

Oh Dawn how I tire of your constant tittle tattle.

I participated in Daniels C25K a year or so ago, it’s brilliant value for money, he’s a thoroughly nice chap, appears completely dedicated to running and helping others to benefit & enjoy. He was at that time a coach with HBAC, and put in hours and hours on what I assume is a voluntary basis.

I expect by putting his prices on here he’d open himself up to more useless opinions and the post would degenerate into the usual nonsense with you at the helm being a predictable bore.

Good luck Dan & runners.

Re: Couch to 5K Running Group
- sidge (28th Aug 2018  18:17:24)

I am signed up, I had an immediate reply from Daniel, I am not posting price as not mine to do, but seemed very reasonable for two sessions a week for 11 weeks.

Re: Couch to 5K Running Group
- Dawn Hoskins (30th Aug 2018  19:12:27)

I've never posted anything bad about Dan or the running group - I think it is a great idea.
I've just asked for the price - which IMO isn't tittle tattle!

I'm sure it is great value - but without knowing what it is I wouldn't be able to say!!!

People are generally put off from calling about something they don't know the price of - I certainly always want the costs up front for anything I am considering.

I'm in no doubt that it would actually do his service a great deal of good to be more open about it.

Re: Couch to 5K Running Group
- Kate (30th Aug 2018  22:43:38)

There is a a number of free couch to 5k apps all using the same formula of gradual increases in run/walk, you can pop in your headphones and go over to Aliceholt and join the parkrun 5k which is massive and has venues across the country all FREE and all very very supportive regardless of ability.

Parkrun (google it) give you timed runs with about 300 other people every Saturday and believe me not all of them are fit or serious runners, a huge amount of them are exactly the sort of people never ran 5k in their lives and are using or indeed starting on the couch to 5k program. You are welcome to walk it, you are welcome to bail out on any one of the laps.

Like I said, C25K is an app, a common program which is free, and Parkrun is also free. Head over to aliceholt and watch the end, there are people rolling in after 45mins (unfit, wanting to improve, taking part) to massive rounds of applause and motivation.

At the end of the day, it you that needs to do it, and trust me you will love it

Re: Couch to 5K Running Group
- Now a runner (31st Aug 2018  06:38:05)

Yes, there are apps for C25K and yes there is park run, both of which are free I agree.

However, from a non exerciser’s point of view (and definitely a non runner) I would most certainly not have turned up to park run on my own not knowing what running was all about. Completing the C25K course was about meeting new people in the same situation as myself and working together. Downloading an app and plugging in headphones and doing it independently is certainly not for me. Technology takes away the people and makes it very solitary, what’s wrong with meeting new people and starting a new hobby or interest with like minded people? I have made a group of new friends since doing the C25K course, my life has totally changed for the better. Learning about the fundamentals of running, pacing and building up to 5k really does work. Rather than ‘getting around a park run’. Having the discipline to go through that process on your own would take a lot of will power when the going gets tough and it certainly does get tough.

The C25K course does end with a Saturday park run, where the whole group finish the course.

And as for saying people are coming in over 45 mins, you should try being one of those last few (and btw I was closer to 55 mins) it’s all well and good for those who’ve finished and can applause those finishing at the rear.

So, as I said there are apps and park run but nothing is better than a dedicated coach (head coach at a local running club) to see you through the 11 week course. I for one know it’s very cheap and he could charge a lot more.

If there are places left on the course and you are interested then I wouldn’t hesitate to sign up. It’s a life changer. Daniel is the most dedicated coach and is a genuinely great guy who enjoys his running, sees the health benefits and wants others to experience it too. He will adapt sessions for individuals (whereas an app wouldn’t), both for those finding it difficult and those finding it more comfortable.

Good luck to those already signed up, I’ve heard that the course is near on full (possibly full now).

Re: Couch to 5K Running Group
- MrsK (31st Aug 2018  12:55:17)

Dawn

Are you actually interested in taking up running?
Or just gathering random information and nit picking?
If you are interested in joining the course, surely an email to Daniel, thanking him for his reply confirming your interest and pointing out the omission of cost would be the next step?

Probably a much speedier way to find out the cost and if you really are interested, the best way to proceed.
Having completed one of Daniel’s courses last year I can confirm cost is no secret, very reasonable and great value!
I started as a complete beginner, no running since school over 40 years ago, to now competing in fun runs, park runs and club events.

Strongly recommend you give it a try!

Re: Couch to 5K Running Group
- Dawn Hoskins (1st Sep 2018  12:21:34)

Hi MrsK

I don't think it is nitpicking to ask to see the price of a service and seriously do not why this would ever be considered as a marketing strategy.

I think everyone should be encouraged to take up sport and be interested in health and fitness. Since my heart implant, I can't do running or swimming. I am, however, fit and active and maintain a ketogenic lifestyle to regulate my heart.

As previously mentioned, I have already emailed Daniel asking for the price and also asked on facebook. He does not want to divulge the price - which both peaks my curiosity and rings my alarm bells.

No one offering a valuable service should be secretive about their prices - it is either worth it or it's not and the price is what it is - simple.

Yo say that the price is not a secret - but it is not mentioned on any of his promotional material and if he will also not respond to my email/facebook question about price either - then it just creates a big fat mystery over something that should never be kept out of marketing comms.

I wish the scheme every success, just as I would wish every participant every success - but for God's sake, just tell people the price up front.

Marketing practice tells us that people with limited funds will not call up to inquire about something when they don't know the cost up front - just in case, they can't afford it and then have to go through the embarrassment of explaining that they can't afford it - or run the risk of having pressure applied either emotional pressure or any other sort. That is why it is normal practice to advertise costs - so that everyone that can afford it can make contact. When companies/people deviate from this standard premise it rings alarm bells simply because it is not normal.

It seems that not only will Daniel not tell us the price, he has somehow sworn all previous members to secrecy - as those that have completed the course, however fantastic and beneficial and all the brilliant things that it brings to their lives - will also not divulge the price. It is complete madness.

As you have completed the course Mrs K, and the price is not a secret, perhaps you will do us the honour of sharing - and tell us how much it is? This way everyone who may want to do it but is reticent about coming forward because of limited finances can feel confident to do so. I'm sure it is very reasonable and great value - but people need to be able to come to that conclusion on their own without any pressure.

Re: Couch to 5K Running Group
- MrsK (1st Sep 2018  13:59:02)

Dawn
I take it that the short answer is, no I am not interested in running with Daniel's group.

Re: Couch to 5K Running Group
- Jess (1st Sep 2018  16:41:44)

Dawn, if you can’t run (not allowed) why are you so concerned about knowing the price?

Daniel has responded to your email, read above.

Everyone that runs a business operates that business how they wish to. I’m pretty sure Daniel hasn’t made all his previous clients keep the price a secret. They are just probably grown up about it know it’s not their place to offer the price out.

Just leave the post alone if you’re not a potential client.

I wonder whom the "Now a runner" poster is? seems to have alot of inside knowledge :)

Re: Couch to 5K Running Group
- Debbie (1st Sep 2018  21:23:12)

Another excellent example of Talkback at it's very best.......

I did Dan's course 18 months ago and it has, literally changed my life. I have previously tried using the NHS C25K running app, which is great, (and yes, free), but I just couldn't do it by myself. I needed someone to support and encourage me. Dan, and the group more than provided that.

Dan is an excellent coach, his experience and support is invaluable for anyone seriously trying to start out on their running journey and achieve a milestone. (My personal view is, Dan doesn't charge enough - whilst I do not know what this course is costing, (I clearly know what I paid), when compared to a personal trainer or a gym, the payment is fractional, especially when you account for the two training sessions twice a week, for 11 weeks).

The support, advice and encouragement is worth every penny. I think everyone should do it. It is a (very small) investment in your health, fitness and well-being.

Just beware, my only warning is, you will be up early and have run 5K every Saturday by 10am!

Re: Couch to 5K Running Group
- Finchie (14th Sep 2018  07:47:50)

I’m hearing really great things about this from someone signed up.

Forgot to ask though, hopefully the training program is done on closed roads through Liphook ? Otherwise I’m out !

Happy Weekend, Finchie

And the Wooden Spoon award goes to....?!

Re: Couch to 5K Running Group
- KT (18th Sep 2018  19:42:06)

I'm currently doing this couch to 5k course with Daniel and a lovely group of around 14 others. It's week 3 now, and it is getting more challenging but it's so rewarding and I never imagined I'd be capable of doing what I am now, and there's still a few weeks to go! It's been great meeting people I would never have otherwise crossed paths with, and the support given has been great so far... onwards and upwards!!

Re: Couch to 5K Running Group
- Debbie (18th Sep 2018  22:42:26)

KT - well done, and keep going. It is a challenging course, but designed to be achievable, and with Dan's support, you will be able to run the full 5K, which is a massive achievement.
Am really pleased you are reaping the rewards, including that of new friendships, our group were similar and we now all run together regularly and have build up some very close relationships.
I look forward to meeting you at your graduation Parkrun
