Local lakes to paddle board?
- N (10th Jan 2020 - 14:35:37)
I am new to SUP paddle boarding and am looking for anywhere locally, that anyone knows of, where I may practice..
I have checked in to petersfield lake and it’s a no, the councillors ruled it out last year, saying it was too dangerous.
Also asked at Frensham Ponds, again a no.
And Champneys, likely to be a no, due to “insurance”.
Obviously there’s the sea (not for me yet!) and the canals at Odiham and Lockwood but just wondered if anyone knew of anywhere else that’s a possibility please.
Many thanks
N

Closest is the Wey Navigation canal, starting at Godalming Wharf, or at the Shalford Bridge. You are supposed to have a licence but I have never been challenged, you can get a British canoeing membership which over the year would be cheaper than paying for the wey daily licence and it permits you in many other places. I suspect if you go further into Guildford you might have someone ask you. But Godalming to Slalford or vice versa is a very nice run of 5km I think. Scenic as well. Don't paddle into the locks, there is only 1 or 2 depending where you are, get out and walk past them giving yourself 25m away from them. The canal is peaceful and a great spot to learn with lots of wind shelter.
As for the sea Emsworth harbour is a good safe spot as well, obviously track the tides, don't go far out and have a tide to work against to get back. Near shore your fine around high tide, keep an eye on the wind for the same reason.
Am pretty good with maps and finding spots, there isn't any easy lake nearby that permits SUP and with some of the lakes you mention they are likely to be full of trees and puncture points.
If you want to go further the Basingstoke Cancel around Farnborough is also good, it does break out into large pools in places, the B canoeing license covers you there as well. But again I have never been challenged about it bar one miserable guy below shalford toward guildford whom had zero authority.

Anywhere along the River Wey from Godalming downstream. Quite a few people seem to park up at Shalford and paddle down to St Catherine's lock and up to Unstead lock. Just be aware that at present the Wey from St Catherine's lock to Milmead lock isn't navigable due to the collapse of the tumbling bay weir.
