Bees in chimney!
- Barbara (27th Jun 2011 - 10:42:25)
Does anyone know of a local company who would deal with some bees who seem to have decided our chimney is a nice place to live?!
My daughter only noticed the noise last night, so I think (hope!) they're relatively new, but they're buzzing at night, and, being 4, she's understandably nervous!
Thanks!

Barbara,
I recently had wild honey bees in one of my chimney pots.
Apollo Pest Control in Bordon let off a smoke bomb into the chimmney and sadly killed them all within about 20 mins. This is the only way to get rid of them.
Tel No. 01420 489144
Good Luck

Thanks, Jana - have left them a message. Have you had any recurrence, or any other undesirables like wasps, attracted by any nest/honey left over?

PLEASE if they are honey bees do not call a pest controller.
The beekeepers association will come out and remove them for you free of charge if they are honey bees.
www.hampshire-waspcontrol.co.uk/honey-bee-removal
Obviously the bees are in the chimney so it may be a bit hard to know exactly what they are - but maybe they're buzzing about outside so you could try and ID them? As the beekeepers association only takes honey bees (not bumbles / miners or masonry bees)
Try this link if youre able to get close enough to ID them: www.hampshire-waspcontrol.co.uk/wasp-nest
Good luck! I hope you manage to get them out safely :)
(I cannot believe anyone would kill honeybees these days when a quick google would see them removed for free - surely everyone knows by now the state of our bee populations!!)

Hi Sarah,
Don't worry! I completely agree with you - I'm the one who usually picks up 'dead' bees off the pavement and puts them on a dandelion or something in the hope of reviving them. However, they seem to be settling in a very awkward place, and I spoke at length to a local beekeeper today (he'd been a beekeeper for 40 years) and he said that extracting them from where I described and rehoming them could cost around £700. And even he admitted that it may end up being an extermination job.
However, I'm not giving up - I'm just weighing all my options. But with 2 small children in the house (one of whom has her headboard right next to the buzzing chimney breast), I can't take too many chances or wait around too long.
Will do what I can!

Hi Sarah/Barbara,
I DID call the Bee Association to try & get mine rehomed but was told that this was not possible and that the only way to get them from coming into my childrens bedrooms was to smoke them.

Hi,
Like stated above a pest controller will not normally treat bees although it's not illegal. A useful site if they are bees or wasps is http://www.waspsnestremovals.co.uk/
Just found 2 dead nests in my loft but god knows how long they have been up there lol

Bees in chimneys can sometimes be removed and put safely in a hive.
I carry out all types of bee removal/rehoming in this area.

Hello, we had a very large collection of bees in our tree in the garden (approx 15,000). I phoned the beekeepers association and they gave about 5 telephone number locally. The first person I rang was at work, but he said that he will come straight away.
When he came he brought a portable bee hive :-) knocked the ball of bees and put them in the hive, it was a amazing to watch, the bees just went in, and the ones that were left flew to the hive (he informed me that that the queen was in there and they were just following her).
Please don't kill them.

When I was a child (many many years ago!) we had bees in our chimney. Our's was a very old stone built house. There were old ventilation bricks in several rooms, one being the bathroom.
I remember that the bees started to come in to the bathroom at quite a rate. I was getting out of the bath and one bee landed on my left toe. I was just a child and very scared. I "flicked" me foot forward hoping to shake off the bee, but instead she just stung my poor toe.
Despite the seemingly hundreds of bees that started to come in to the house vie the vent bricks, my toe was the only casualty!
Bees will only sting if they feel very threatened, as by doing so they loose their own lives. So please do not be too afraid of bees, they very very rarely sting.

If anyone has a swarm of bees I am happy to collect and remove free of charge provided they are honey bees and I can get to them without causing injury or harm to someone or myself. Unfortunately bees in chimneys are particularly difficult to reach, therefore the association was right the only way to get them out is to smoke them by lighting a fire. They then think there is a fire and will gorge themselves on honey and if enough smoke will abscond (which is why beekeepers use a smoker). As I said earlier, I can remove bees from chimneys permanently. Just lighting a fire will not work long term. I also collect bee swarms from any location, even at height. 01428 712790 http://www.natureinbalance.co.uk/Bees.html
