Rain Did Not Dampen Spirits at Liphook Carnival!

‘When I remarked that I thought it might rain this year on Carnival Day, it had been just a little joke, but when we watched the weather forecast last week, we realised that my prediction was about to come true and sure enough the heavy rain that had been expected descended on us during Saturday morning! The Carnival Committee struggled for several hours to decorate the Queens float with driving rain and heavy winds and all got very wet and soggy! However, the rain did nothing to dampen the Carnival spirit and at 4pm as the rain clouds moved aside and left glimpses of blue sky it was clear that rain had not and would not stop play!

Again this year, the float builders of Liphook did us proud with their ingenuity and attention to detail and some truly spectacular floats rolled up from 4.30pm onwards and much excitement and fun filled the air on the Longmoor Road. From Ice Age 3 to Priscilla Queen of the Dessert, the costumes make up and dance routines had been practised to perfection and everyone looked absolutely amazing.

Once the procession kicked off at 7pm the Square was filled with music and noise and the large crowds enjoyed another spectacular Carnival, and as everyone dispersed on their way to enjoy the fireworks and bonfire at Radford Park it was clear that the Carnival is as popular as ever, and, despite the economic problems we are facing all our favourite groups, clubs and associations that take part every year, were just as determined to play their part in the biggest event on the Liphook Calendar in 2009.

To date we have counted just over £2,500 from the collecting tins so we are delighted that we have a fabulous amount of money to donate to local good causes at our AGM in February.

I would just like to say an enormous thank you to everyone involved in making Carnival day happen including our float builders, sponsors, judges, the Police, St John’s, our Marshals and of course to you for coming along. Special thanks must also go to the Carnival Committee, who all work very hard not just on Carnival Day and Night, but throughout the whole year to make the event happen – what a team!!

We look forward to seeing you next year!’
