urgent help - white dove with broken wing
- Mary W (19th Aug 2011 - 09:28:54)
A white dove has arrived at my neighbour's house with a trailing wing, I should think broken.
The poor thing can't fly and is obviously tame.
Can anyone suggest what thay can do with it? Nobody has the heart to finish it off - can anything be done for it?

The Brent Lodge bird sanctury at Siddlesham on the road to Selsea take in and treat injured birds. Takes about 35 mins to get there.. They are really nice people. Phone number is 01243641672. You could also try the vets although they may just put it down for you.

I got in touch with RSPCA and they gave me the name of local vet in Headly Road. They weren't all that keen to do anything although they did eventually offer to take the bird. And then I couldn't catch it! Now it is about the place and I'm getting quite fond of it, although it keeps trying to come in the house, which is a nuisance. It got in through the french windows the other day and was trotting about my living room for a bit, but I shooed it out again.
It seems quite happy, I give it a bit of pigeon food and fresh water. Wonder if I should let nature take its course and allow it to enjoy a few weeks relative happiness, rather than have it prematurely put down. I expect the wing would be pretty unlikely to work again after all this time.

M did you try ringing Brent Lodge for advice. In the past we have taken several birds to them which have been sucessfully released or put down if necessary. We have friends who live in Selsea who are visiting sometime over the weekend .I might be able to pesuade them to take the bird in for you. We always give them a small donation.

Can you give me a mobile number to ring? The bird came to meet me tonight, seems to look upon me as its mother! I give it some food, its a bit like a white chicken! Not all that easy to catch though.
