Liphook's new Cinema.
- paul (31st Mar 2022 - 15:08:53)

Hi,
According to local publications the new movie house will open in time for Easter.
Does it look like it?

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- Helen (31st Mar 2022 - 18:12:26)

I’m not sure what point you’re making but it’s going to be fabulous isn’t it. A really good news story for Liphook.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- Dee (31st Mar 2022 - 18:29:16)

Hi

Which Easter, asking for a friend.

Cheers

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- BP (31st Mar 2022 - 20:45:03)

I read that - but then I re-read it. It says a launch which could just be an announcement of films to be shown and stuff rather than an actual opening.

But it does look good and it'll be ready soon. Exiting !

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- C (1st Apr 2022 - 08:30:58)

They are already selling tickets for showings in late April.

- Jon (1st Apr 2022 - 09:10:42)

From their own website:

"We transform iconic buildings and breathe life back into High Streets, creating a cultural and entertainment hub offering so much more than simply the latest films"

All I can recall is several years of stalled building works and an eye-sore in the centre of Liphook :)

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- Dave (1st Apr 2022 - 12:07:23)

Jon, what a bizarre contribution? did you just expect them to wave a magic wand and instantly transform the building? There were also a lot of planning issues out of their control to overcome and of course Covid......

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- Simon (1st Apr 2022 - 12:45:09)

£16 a ticket, plus £1.50 booking fee. Yowser.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- D (1st Apr 2022 - 13:37:18)

At those prices that's me out. I want to watch a film not buy shares in the place.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- Steve (1st Apr 2022 - 14:14:39)

Well D its obviously your choice but what would you think would be a fair ticket price given the investment that has been put into the development?
£16.50 is clearly a premium over local cinemas like the Odeon in Guildford but taking into account the need to travel and possibly park if you were to go into Guildford or Portsmouth it doesn't seem unreasonable.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- dave (1st Apr 2022 - 14:19:47)

D...I expect you are not their target market ;-) High prices do not seem to deter some, look at Deers Hut, most expensive pub in the area by a long shot but also the best and busiest. I guess high prices keep the riff raff away

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- passfield resident (1st Apr 2022 - 14:57:25)

Jon-the new cinema building will be the opposite of an eyesore. Whether people want to use the new cinema or not is up to them, but the negativity is sad-it's got to be healthy for Liphook if someone has the guts to take over a derelict building and make something new and different out of it.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- Helen (1st Apr 2022 - 15:12:47)

I think they also are planning a cafe / bar which anyone can access regardless of whether you have bought a film ticket. It is good to have another venue in Liphook and it could bring money into other shops as there are daytime showings as well. The lack of on site parking is a bit off putting though.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- Sarah (1st Apr 2022 - 16:16:51)

I'm hugely excited about this. So excited in fact, that I've just booked a sofa seat for two for Downton Abbey at the end of this month.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- Ian (1st Apr 2022 - 16:37:05)

You can always park in the Midhurst Rd carpark where the local yobs hang out and party on a Fri and Saturday night. But mind your paintwork and mirrors :)

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- Helen (1st Apr 2022 - 21:12:56)

I know the car park is there not a good distance if you are disabled.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- paul (1st Apr 2022 - 21:34:55)

Hi,
£16.50 seems a high price for watching one movie.
I hope there are concessions for disabled, medical, and mental conditions.
Also for senior citizens on a fixed income for entertainment, that would enjoy a discount.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- J (1st Apr 2022 - 23:43:10)

I just checked and a Premier seat at Guildford Odeon tomorrow (Saturday) night for The Batman is £14.50. The same film on a Saturday night (23rd April) at the new Cinema would cost £16.75 or £14.25 for a senior/student. It seems pretty reasonable to me considering it’s local and hopefully a much more premier and intimate venue.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- D (2nd Apr 2022 - 00:43:06)

Dave, couldn't agree more. They wouldn't want ignorant, uncultured riff-raff like me there. Steve, I've just been to a theatre and seen a live orchestra (at least forty musicians) for two hours for twelve quid. Each to their own I know, but that to me is far better value.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- Slimetime (2nd Apr 2022 - 15:42:56)

When you factor in the cost of getting to Guildford (Guildford Odeon being my cinema of choice) and the cost of parking, the price doesn't seem too bad. You have the added bonus of supporting a local business and a reduced carbon footprint.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- Joe (2nd Apr 2022 - 19:09:49)

I think the price is quite reasonable but the rate quoted for odeon is misleading as there are many ways to get far cheaper seats than that. It will hopefully bring shoppers into Liphook.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- paul (2nd Apr 2022 - 22:46:01)

Hi,
Going to the Cinema i.e. Vue or Odeon screens, must be one of the cheapest entertainment places per hour.
Factor in the price per ticket and length time of movie.
The film possibly costing millions to the production company before release.

The new Cinema in Liphook will be a different experience and better, so enjoy and support our new entertainment locally.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- Jo (3rd Apr 2022 - 21:14:37)

Hi,
I personally think £16.50 a ticket is excessive so would only go there as a rare treat. Odeon cinema is 7 quid a ticket at port solent. For say 4 people going that's £28 plus fuel and free parking.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- Mary W (4th Apr 2022 - 13:19:53)

Such a shame that every effort to improve facilities in Liphook is met with such scorn and derision.
Obviously some prefer the old garage that used to occupy this prime site, although it was hardly a delight to the eye.
I travel all the way to Everyman in Esher to see films in comfort and I am delighted to hear that the cinema is nearly ready.

I would have liked to have been informed about the tickets being on sale, but maybe they haven’t got their mailing and members list fully operational yet.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- M (4th Apr 2022 - 16:43:44)

Such a shame people are making negative comments about this new business when it hasn't even opened yet.
How does anyone know whether the cost of the ticket will be good value when you haven't even tried it out yet.
If the place is warm, comfortable, has a great cinema experience and has staff who care about their customers then it will a wonderful place to go......... if it's not then by all means comment that it wasn't for you, but not before you've even stepped foot inside!

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- dave (4th Apr 2022 - 17:03:19)

Unfortunately Talkback is plagued by some diehard miseries that resent and bemoan any and all change. They hark back to the good old days of eating coal for dinner, scabbie infected knees and the great community bonding during times of hardship and adversity. Most are incapable of moving forward, they are so stuck in the past they cannot comprehend that Liphook is now a nicer place than it once was.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- Anon (4th Apr 2022 - 18:47:12)

This is not a conventional cinema so I’m not going to particularly compare the price to odeon. It looks like a very novel and unique experience so looking forward to giving it a go, especially as someone who likes to extend their legs outwards and not have their knees thrust into the seat infront!
If it’s a success perhaps we could persuade the owners to rebuild the magnificent and much missed Rex in Haslemere!

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- Jen (5th Apr 2022 - 12:51:24)

I think it's looking good! I drove through Liphook yesterday evening and there were several people still working on the front of the building at 7.25pm. It looks like it's all set to open on schedule.

I think it will be a great addition to Liphook and I'm really looking forward to my first visit.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- D (5th Apr 2022 - 19:32:06)

"Community bonding during times of hardship and adversity." Yes, Dave, we did. Such a shame it's a quality you appear to despise.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- Dave (6th Apr 2022 - 09:00:23)

D, as always you have missed the point, not surprising though!

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.

Hi,
Comes to mind for us all, People who live in glass houses should not throw stones.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- Ian (6th Apr 2022 - 16:54:09)

Why are there so many moaning people on Talkback. Things change, generally for good and Liphook is going to be significantly improved by this exciting new business. Many of us that have moved here in the last few years are thrilled by the changes! Guido’s is fabulous, Old Thorns is a fantastic asset and the coffee shops are superb. Yes, they cost a bit but hey, life is for living and my friends and I are looking forward to cocktails and movies in The Square

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- John (8th Apr 2022 - 12:02:58)

I love reading some of the comments on Talkback!

Personally, I am really looking forward to it opening. I have been to the 'Everyman Cinema' in Winchester which, I believe, is of a similar style and makes for a really good evening out. Yes, the tickets may be more expensive than the huge corporate businesses of Odeon and Vue but it is on our doorstep. We can walk to it, walk home from it and spend our money in a local establishment employing local (probably) people.

The building will brighten up Liphook and can only be an asset in my opinion.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- paul (8th Apr 2022 - 18:52:31)

Hi,
Good post John.
Liphook needs lifting for entertainment locally without travelling miles.
With an ever growing population in our village with new housing around, it can only be fabulous darlings.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- Phill (15th Apr 2022 - 00:08:50)

I’m also excited about having our own, local, independent cinema. The owners are knowledgeable, passionate about the ‘big screen’ and appear keen to grow with their audience.
It will certainly offer a more comfortable, intimate experience than the large chains, plus a venue for meetings etc.
Surely a welcome addition to the village regardless of whether you are film enthusiast?
Phill

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- local resident (15th Apr 2022 - 04:57:35)

The whole project is entirely amazing.

I live down the Headley Road. When I think of the sorry collection of properties in this part of the village - abandoned building sites, empty shop units being used as advertising hoardings (thanks LAS), massage joints (no offence), the infamous 'Square Dental', and the slew of estate agents, we should all be crawling over broken glass to support this venture.

I really hope it works. It seems like a massive gamble to me, but 'fortune favours the brave'

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- D (15th Apr 2022 - 08:25:16)

Such a shame that the high ticket price puts it out of reach for many Liphook residents. I've just looked at their website and was so shocked at the membership prices (yes, I know you don't have to be a member to go) that the dog is tucking into my upturned bowl of cornflakes on the floor. But as Dave says, they probably have a target market and it's a way of keeping the riff-raff out.

Hardly a cinema for the community.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- Joe (15th Apr 2022 - 11:44:34)

It is clear from this website and that some showings are sold out already that it should flourish. The Millennium Hall has films on offer at a very reasonable price and also Haslemere Hall but with the cost of petrol now it is good to have a choice locally now. Perhaps a raising of standards will be good for the square the buildings look neglected enough without leaving that one empty. It could have been totally housing instead.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- D (15th Apr 2022 - 18:58:40)

I believe the seating capacity is sixty one seats (source:- Liphook Herald.) With a capacity as small as that I should imagine anything they do will be a sell out. Any other cinema sixty one ticket sales would be considered a flop.

Just putting "sell out" into perspective.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- M (15th Apr 2022 - 22:18:41)

Oh Darren, / D
Just go and book a ticket and see for your self, before jumping to conclusions.
You never know you may just enjoy your self !
It looks great,I have already booked seats for which I consider a good option.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- Dave the Dog (15th Apr 2022 - 23:12:09)

D, oh aren’t you joyful.

You state that it’s too expensive for many Liphook residence, when the website states that some showings are currently sold out, therefore, it obviously isn’t too expensive. A sell out 60 seat auditorium is at 100% occupancy, so why are you comparing another cinema and calling it ‘a flop’ when they actually can’t generate anymore revenue as it’s SOLD OUT.

Maybe you are one of the ‘riff raff’ that they wish to keep out of there. Just carry on going to the vue or odeon if you wish to see a new release film rather than the new high class cinema in Liphook. I bet you’ll be there one day, purchasing your ticket, snooping around, trying to find any slight negative that your pessimistic mind can jump upon!

Before throwing comments around about overpricing for the area, take a look at the area where you live. Liphook is an affluent & desired place to live on the edge of the South Downs, we aren’t living in some inner city suburb of London. I’m pretty sure much research has been done before choosing Liphook for the location of the cinema, knowing that it will attract people from other areas too. Surely it can only go well for the village.

On that note, I am very much looking forward to the new cinema opening in the village, as are many other Liphook residence.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- D (16th Apr 2022 - 08:31:46)

M, your distinctive style of written English makes me think you are Maz/Susan.

Dave the poodle, how can Liphook be considered "high class" if when the local supermarket runs out of cheap petrol residents whine because they have to go elsewhere and pay a few pence more? I'm disappointed you use terms like ""high class" and "riff raff", very socially divisive terms not condusive to a harmonious community.

I hope yourself and M/Maz/Susan enjoy yourselves at the pictures. With her several identities I should think "One Flew Over The Cuckoos' Nest" most appropriate.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- Ian (16th Apr 2022 - 09:05:01)

Oh D, you really are a delight! Thank goodness your opinions and attitudes are in the minority now in Liphook.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- D (17th Apr 2022 - 01:13:04)

Ian, you would do better to engage in reasonable debate and discussion, instead of constantly carping from the sidelines at people's contributions like a drunk sitting on the pavement swigging from a bottle of whiskey and shouting abuse at passers by.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- passfield resident (17th Apr 2022 - 12:11:16)

D-pot and kettle come to mind

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- Ian (17th Apr 2022 - 12:35:14)

Unfortunately D most of your contributions deserve the reactions they provoke. If you can’t stand the heat……

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- Mary W (20th Apr 2022 - 23:21:50)

Put the testosterone away, boys, and stop fighting.

Great that the cinema is nearly here, I’ve booked and looking forward to it. Remember there are several showings a day and some are less expensive, so could probably get a bargain out of peak time.

I haven’t seen anything that promises to lift our spirits in recent months, so give yourselves a treat and be positive. Lots of local villages are green with envy. It will put Liphook on the map, at last.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- er (21st Apr 2022 - 11:19:20)

I am offended by the term boys, we cannot have such provocation in an otherwise gender neutral disagreement, by order of the UK Parliamentary Non Gender Specific Committee for Equality, Harmony and Receptiveness of Expression and Thought! Please present for reprogramming!

Hi,
Who will be the celebrity on the red carpet of the Grand opening of
The Living Room Cinema Liphook.
I know Johnny Depp is busy in USA at the moment.
Who would be a great star to inaugurate the ceremony?
Hugh Bonneville lives nearby in Midhurst maybe...

I recall it was announced on their website a little while ago that Hugh Bonneville would be attending the grand opening

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.

Honestly. I can’t wait! Just booked seats for the secrets of Dumbledore. And the selection of films so far look really good. No more Odeon for me. I’m really excited about this and believe this is a massive boost for Liphook.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- Simon (22nd Apr 2022 - 21:50:25)

It does look good, and seems to be more selection of films than I thought there would be. Time to find a babysitter....

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- Mary W (22nd Apr 2022 - 22:06:11)

In a word FAB U LOUS!!

Seriously, just enjoyed first film, Mincemeat. The place was buzzing. I don’t know how they got it done in time, a month ago I would said impossible. Well done to the magnificent team effort and all hands to the deck approach to today’s huge crowds.

OK, so there are a few nit picks, a few last minute tweaks, but I am sure they will be sorted mostly. Freezing down draught from air con, bright white light from the left hand exit sign shining on screen, small individual arm rest drink tray with an odd cutout in the middle threatening the balance of glasses in the dark. The loos a bit of a pain with wash basins in the cubicles so queue built up - unisex, so see how that goes down with no urinal (wet floor a bit yucky for fastidious females). Maybe there will be a urinal sometime soon?

But the large screen was an eye opener (!!), sound was excellent, and the willingness of the staff to go that extra mile made it a first day to be remembered. And I shall be going again very soon. A fantastic achievement. Rosie kept it all going with aplomb and humour, what a great choice for floor manager.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- Helen (23rd Apr 2022 - 00:22:33)

I imagine the building is finished now so probably not going to build a separate mens urinal if they have installed unisex loos.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- D (23rd Apr 2022 - 07:52:42)

Queues in the loos? Couldn't none of you wait until you got home then? I've done a twelve hour shift without going to the loo many a time, maybe people have weaker bladders these days. I've never been a fan of unisex lavatories myself but in this day and age I suppose it is sexist to demand separate facilities. Given all the gender variants these days would the two sexes be enough anyway?

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- Mary W (23rd Apr 2022 - 08:27:02)

I did notice a sort of storage area beyond loos, carrying on from the unisex cubicles. Conceivably intended for something else. Horrible when you sit down and trouser legs trail in the drips. Ugh!!!

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- Ian (23rd Apr 2022 - 08:51:23)

D’s off again! Ha ha ha. Not sure if her weak bladder comment is actually serious or is it just taking the p@&s!

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- Mary W (23rd Apr 2022 - 08:52:11)

Well, D, you are obviously not in your 80’s! I know you’re only joking, but it isn’t a very welcome sight when the queue for the loo stretches halfway across the bar when the film ends! It won’t be long before a few of the regulars find a favourite spot round the side of the building. The French influence…

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- Rob (23rd Apr 2022 - 09:43:03)

@D,Mygoodness,i work in the medical profession and, going 12 hours without going to the toilet is extremely concerning!

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- D (23rd Apr 2022 - 11:46:45)

I'm not saying I can do it every time, Rob. There are days when because of events of the day one just doesn't drink so much. My bladder must be the size of a football.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- Anon (23rd Apr 2022 - 12:12:28)

I too can go 12 hours without a bathroom trip but when I go to the cinema I can guarantee the moment the film starts I’ll need a tinkle!

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- D (23rd Apr 2022 - 13:48:09)

I know what you mean, Anon. Some days you can get so engrossed in what you are doing that the pressure just goes out of your mind, until someone says "I need a pee!"

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- Rob (24th Apr 2022 - 14:40:45)

Well just be careful, holding urine in can weaken the bladder muscles and can cause a uti, and getting back to the cinema, we attended yesterday and I must say a wonderful experience, no more odeon for me, well done.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- paul (24th Apr 2022 - 17:56:09)

Hi,
Interesting post's about queues to the loos, and bladder retention.
What are the movies like?

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- paul (26th May 2022 - 20:42:50)

Hi,
Impressed with our new Liphook Cinema today.
Attended the showing of the Downton Abbey movie.
Good customer service, and wish them good luck for the future.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- AF (27th May 2022 - 09:11:55)

Just been to see Maverick.

I am impressed with the films being shown, i thought it would be arty farty french films with sub-titles that nobody watches.

The cinema itself is nice an comfortable with good leg room.

But i have to say that at over £16.00 per ticket it's a bit pricey. Other cinemas charge £4.99 to £10.00.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- Really (27th May 2022 - 10:14:40)

Odeon Guildford is £13.50.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- dave (27th May 2022 - 12:44:31)

Seems to be busy and thriving, a real asset to the village and the pricing structure is keeping the riff raff away which really adds to the appeal!

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- Pete (27th May 2022 - 13:05:13)

Definition of Riff raff [ a group of people who are not considered respectable or honest.] It would seem that the price won't keep them out Dave, our current cabinet and PM fall squarely into the definition and they have plenty of money.

Re: Liphook's new Cinema.
- B (27th May 2022 - 20:12:13)

The price is relative, once you take into consideration the cost of getting to the cheaper venues plus the time to travel there it works out the same. And for 16 quid you get a better service than you’d find in your Odeon or The world of Cine.

I suspect the “riff-raff” post is trolling, don’t be like Dave
