Bramshott Cemetery
- Dick Randall (9th Aug 2023 - 17:27:19)
Along with many of you, we have a lot of family members and friends interred at Bramshott Cemetery.
I went up there to pay respects to my family and friends and could not believe the state of the grave yard. Grass and weeds are at least 3 feet tall in places and it covers most of the main area as well as the front part just in front of the Canadian War Graves.
I spoke with a few other people visiting and a couple of them said that they had raised the issue with the council, and the answer they received was that it was left like that for the wildlife.
Unbelievable.... The wild life have about 2000 acres around the cemetery to inhabit, with the river Way about 200 yards away.
I think this is just an excuse for cost cutting. Its obvious the council has no respect for those interred and their families.

Does anyone know the real reason why some graves are mown and the others are disrespected?

I think the war graves are looked after by a separate body to the parochial church council. I think the Parish council give a financial grant to the church to mow the rest.

When I last wrote to the Parochial Church Council about this matter I received a prompt e-mail by return advising me that the responsibility for cutting the grass was down to the relatives of the deceased.
Since many of the graves predate the last war I suspect that the families have themselves passed.
I know that in the past the Parish Council have given grants toward the cost of cutting the grass in the cemetery, so why is the grass not being cut now?

Perhaps the church are spending the money on other things. A lot of churches have volunteers who do this work.

Just because the grass isn't being cut doesn't mean that the graves are being "disrespected". Whether or not one likes a neatly cut lawn or prefers a more natural and biodiverse setting is a matter of personal taste.
I prefer a natural setting, so deliberately chose a natural burial ground for my loved one's last resting place, where no grass cutting ever takes place and no headstones or grave adornments are permitted. There is only nature, reclaiming its own.
I strongly recommend that people check that a burial ground/cemetery/churchyard meets their requirements before booking it.

We were at the cemetery the other day, it's a shame we frequently only hear the complaints on here, but I thought it looked gorgeous and was actually saying how privileged we are to have such an amazing village cemetery with the beautifully kept Canadian war graves, which would grace any churchyard.
There's the more traditional and dignified stone war memorial for local men, some intriguing ancient hidden areas with their ancient crosses and walks, the peacefulness, the vistas, even the church was open and looked impressive with its new roof and fine stained glass, the main grave area was nicely laid out, has so many fresh flowers and all the main walkways were well cut, I did notice what the OP complained of, some sectors where the grass was higher, I can't tell you why, but I thought maybe a little parish like this has to cut back somewhere (no pun intended!) or are they just doing what I do at home, leave a few areas a bit longer to encourage nature, I don't know, but I wonder how many of us turn up at church on Sunday and joyfully tithe to help them keep this incredible and no doubt, labour intensive amenity open to the public I know I don't, churches are struggling all over the country and funded entirely by voluntary donations!
There are way worse places you could end up, let's be glad we are where we are in the world!
