Cars on London Road - Dangerous Parking
- Phelim (9th Sep 2023 - 10:35:20)

For the last two Saturdays, and Bank Holiday Monday, cars have been parking dangerously on London Road near the recreation ground. They are all along the road from the Methodist Church towards Tower Road - including on the bends.

There is a solid white line for a reason. According to the Highway Code rule 129 : "Double white lines where the line nearest you is solid. This means you MUST NOT cross or straddle it unless it is safe and you need to enter adjoining premises or a side road. You may cross the line if necessary, provided the road is clear, to pass a stationary vehicle, or overtake a pedal cycle, horse or road maintenance vehicle, if they are travelling at 10 mph (16 km/h) or less." The solid white line denotes a hazardous stretch of road.

Yes, we can pass the stationary cars, but we cannot see round the corners to tell when it is safe, and we have no space to pull into if a car comes round the corner. Now imagine if an ambulance or fire engine needed to come along that road at high speed. I know the car park at the recreation ground is not big enough for modern cars, but neither are the roads suitable for modern Range Rovers and similar to be parked along the road when they take ALL the lane of a busy road into the village.

Most of the cars are parents taking their children to play football. One of the best ways for the kids to warm up their muscles would be to walk or cycle. So please could Liphook Football Club, and the parents of the children, think not only of their convenience but also about the safety of other road uses.

The Football Club should limit the number of games played at any one time to minimise the amount of vehicles.
I totally agree it is an accident waiting to happen.
Maybe a conversation is needed with the Police to get No Parking Cones put out.

Am sure this post will make a difference and they will think twice about parking incorrectly in future.

Are there yellow lines on the road? If not, no parking restrictions are in place.

Maybe take it up with the County Council, if it is an issue?

There is nowhere in Liphook that isn't within walking distance of the recreation ground. So if it's children who live in Liphook going to play football and their parents going to watch them, then surely the vast majority of them could walk there?

Perhaps it is supporters from the teams who do not live in Liphook?

Went to the beach yesterday and they were parking everywhere they shouldn't, up the verges, on bends, on people's front lawns, up the pavements, 4 deep on the village green, outside the church and all around the war memorial, didn't see any tickets but I have seen the police down there on previous years, basically if there are no double yellow lines people can and will plonk their cars as near to where they're going as possible, they won't care a hoot about a post on the village website, oh and people in Range Rovers, BMWs and Mercedes etc aren't going to care about a ticket or two, as one woman on YouTube famously said to the policeman telling her off, 'yes yes just hurry up and give me the ticket, I'm rich!' mind you that was in North London a few years ago!

I saw this as well and you are absolutely correct. It was an accident waiting to happen. Unfortunately people do not care about anyone else and all they are concerned with is their own selfish desire.
I’m convinced it’s people coming from outside the area to the football as 99% of the kids probably walk to the rec.
I can’t see why there shouldn’t be any double yellow lines painted along that stretch and actually have them enforced if people still park there.
Needs to be done before an accident or , heaven forbid, a fatality occurs.

Most event organisers would inform visiting teams of logistics and parking. Perhaps whoever organises football at the rec could do this (maybe they already do?).

And there we have it "no yellow lines park where you want" perfectly demonstrating the lack of common sense and courtesy all too common now. Do you really need double yellow lines on a blind bend near a recreation ground to tell you not to park.

If you drive at the appropriate speed for the road, it is not really a blind bend. Perhaps drivers should slow down (I know this ranks as an impossible request, along with not using mobile 'phones while driving across the square, and not blocking the roundabouts at school run time!)

A reminder: You should drive at a speed that enables you to stop in the distance you can see on your side of the road!

Perhaps Pete you should work on your driving skills rather that dictating to people where they can and cannot park and promoting yourself as a common sense judge! As mentioned, there are no restrictions here. Perhaps lobby Hampshire Highways?

The main issue as far as I'm concerned is where the cars are actually parked on the pavement as I saw a weekend or so back.

- Dave (3rd Oct 2023 - 11:40:25)

Dave- Or perhaps people ought to use their common sense a bit more instead of being told what is sensible and what is not (eg being dictated to) we shouldn't need to get any authorities involved, costing everyone money, its just a matter of people acting sensibly and courteously.
By the way what makes you think I would need to concentrate on my driving skills, maybe you ought to brush up on your debating skills.

Have to say, having seen this for the first time this morning I do understand people’s concern. It’s really restricting the flow of traffic on the road and also clogging up the pavement for wheelchair users etc. who do all the cars belong to?

Re: Cars on London Road - Dangerous Parking

Rule 240 of the Highway Code states you must not park on a road with solid white lines, even if the line next to you is broken. I believe London Road has solid white lines.

Badly worn 5 months ago. But definitely double white. Google Streetview
