Dog Attack Friday 29th September
- Andrea (1st Oct 2023 - 17:17:15)

*Dog attack - Friday 29th September 7:20pm*

If you were walking on the rec around 7.20pm on Friday evening, we are looking for a man & a woman who were in the area with a medium sized black & white collie type dog.

The dog was not on a lead, seemingly coming from out of nowhere and attacked my friend’s 13 year old daughter (who was just walking along), leaving her with injuries on both of her legs - she was taken to Haslemere Hospital for assessment and the incident was reported to the police.

After the attack the dog was put on a lead but that did not calm it down. My friend’s daughter froze in shock & then ran home, so no clearer details were obtained.

Apparently the woman asked if my friends daughter was ok, but she could not speak due to the shock of what had just happened, but no one seemed to follow her home to make sure she was ok.

Please comment below with any useful information.

It's high time that the law was changed to reflect the current situation, ie that there are now millions more people who own dogs and who seem to think that their animals must be allowed to run around unleashed and out of control, to the detriment of everybody else.

All dogs in public places should be on a lead at all times. There are far too many incidents of dogs attacking other dogs and dogs attacking people, or frightening them or running up to them, jumping up at them, barking and basically being a total bloody nuisance!

We need to compel people to take responsibility for their animals. Yes I know there are plenty of responsible owners. There are plenty of responsible drivers, too. We wouldn't need speed limits, would we, if everyone just did the right thing and behaved considerately? We need laws to control those who don't.

People should be able to go out for a walk or out for a run without being pestered and harassed or, God forbid, attacked by off-lead dogs.

I'm a dog owner and I totally agree. Dogs should be on a lead in a public place.

pj-here's the thing ( if you can understand this). Some people appear to dislike dog owners. Some people appear to dislike cyclists. Some people appear to dislike travellers. Some people appear to dislike people who support a different football team. Some people don't like immigrants. Some people moan about young people. Some people moan about old people. So it goes on and we all end up disliking or moaning about each other, especially on the internet, which is full of intolerence, predudice and plain hatred. Where does it get us?

Dog owners still saying plenty

Having spoke to a policeman recently about it… it’s confirmed

I AM NOT LEGALLY REQUIRED TO PUT MY DOG IN A LEAD

so if you dare ask me too you will be shouted at

Do not walk in the woods if your going to wet the bed about the facts, and stop making up rules

As a dog owner and trainer I am sorry this has happened to this family. I would hope the owners of the dog have come forward. There is no need for the dog to be pts as suggested. My suggestion would be training and guidance from a qualified trainer/ behaviourist for the owners and the collie dog. Probably the said dog should be on a lead for the for future, a longline would enable the dog to has access to smells and a form of freedom enabling the owners to have control.
Am I right in thinking the council could ask for a notice for dogs on leads in the rec?

Maybe we are looking at this the wrong way and it is us who should be on leads.

There are aprox 12 million dogs in the UK so about 15% of the human population.

Deaths by dog (yearly average) 3 killer dogs = 0.00025%
Deaths by humans 607 killer humans = 0.00074%

Non fatals by dogs 7443 (0.63%)
Non fatals by humans 21,000000. (25.61%)

The sad thing is very rarely do human attacks make the news as it no longer sells papers, what a sad state of affairs that as a race we are more inclined to buy a paper with a dog attack on the front than we are a human one.

I am not downplaying what happened but it would be nice to know if the young lady is better now. It must have scared her. The poster said that her parents took her to Haslemere hospital to be “ checked over “. Perhaps we can here the outcome of this. It is not necessary to put the dog down yes the dog needs training by a specialist.

I am very sorry to hear about the attack on the young girl in the park that’s awful and I hope she is recovering from her injuries.

I as a fellow collie owner I know only too well that Collies are fickle and need to be trained and kept occupied on a regular basis. These are working dogs who need constant stimulation and have a natural herding instinct and are likely to nip as this is what they would do to the sheep. If owned by someone who hasn’t got experience can become aggressive and will bite, therefore they either need to be muzzled or kept on a lead.

Any dog regardless of whether you have had them from a puppy or not needs training. Before lockdown there were very few dog attacks that we had heard of and now at least one every day throughout the country. Since lockdown a lot of people have got dogs that haven’t the experience as never had a dog before, for selfish reasons bought a dog for company or something to do as they were bored and home all day. The owners have now gone back to work and these dogs have now been either left with a dog walker or left at home while the owners go out to work, allowing the animal to get bored and frustrated due to lack of stimulation and attention.

Isn’t it about time that it should be compulsory that anyone who rescues or buys a dog / puppy should have some kind of basic training to enable the dog to sit, down, stay and have a decent recall, so people who are not dog lovers can go about their daily business without being annoyed by a dog.
