What a lovely idea. Brilliant for lots of banks/building societies.
Just one thing to be mindful of, Barclays don’t have a branch in Petersfield anymore so there is only the their hub option that operates out of the library there.
27 The Square, Petersfield, GU32 3HH.
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 09:30-16:30.
Telephone 0345 7 345 345.
It advises walk in appointments may be available or you can make an appointment via Barclays.co.uk/local
There is no cash or counter service available there. I’m not entirely sure what they are offering, maybe just advice.
I believe the Post Office can help with much of what the banks have traditionally done so might be worth a check at our local branch first.

To date we have only been asked about access to Lloyds bank, but if there is interest in other banks we will consider other locations such as Waterlooville, Alton or further afield - our only concern is accessibility so flat destinations would be preferable.

Barclays in Petersfield library is very helpful.
They are able to assist with many things. It’s accessed via a lift if the stairs are too much.
They also have a small waiting area for walk ins.
I had my debit card request order from them and my log in reset, and other admin requests dealt with very well.
They also assist with online banking etc.
They really are very helpful and patient more so than just a counter service,as it’s very private.
There’s also a Nat West in Petersfield with helpful staff.

What is it that folk wish to do at the bank? Most ordinary banking services can be done at the post office in the Co-op now. Perhaps people are unaware of this service being available?

Jen
Are you for real ?
There is more to banking than making payments or withdrawals in an environment that offers no privacy.
Not all of us are able use online banking for many and varied reasons.

You can't talk to someone about your accounts at the co-op. That's the point.

I pinched this from a friends social Media page :/
I had just spent an hour in the bank with my father, as he had to transfer some money. I couldn't resist asking:
"Dad, why don't we activate your internet banking?"
"Why would I do that?" he replied.
"Because then you wont have to spend an hour here for things like that transfer.
You can even do your shopping online. Everything will be so easy!"
I was so excited about introducing him to the exciting world of online banking.
He thought for a minute, then answered "If I do that, I wont have to step out of the house?"
"Yes, yes" I said. I told him how even grocery can be delivered to your front door now, and how Amazon delivers everything!
His answer left me speechless.
He replied "Since I entered this bank today, I have met four of my friends. And I have chatted for a while with the staff who know me very well by now.
You know that I am alone. This is the company that I need. I like to get ready and come to the bank. I have more than enough time, it is the physical touch that I crave.
Two years ago I got sick, The shop owner, where I buy my fruit, came to see me and sat by my bedside and cried.
When your mum fell down few days ago during her morning walk, our local grocer saw her and immediately brought his car to rush her home, as he knows where I live.
Would I have that 'human' touch if everything became online?
Why would I want everything delivered to me, forcing me to only interact with my computer?
I like to know the person I'm dealing with and not just the 'seller'. It creates bonds and relationships.
Does Amazon deliver all this as well?"
Technology isn't life. Spend time with people. Not with devices.

Penny-brilliant . My dad was exactly like that. He used to love going and having a chat with the ladies in the Nationwide in Liphook. He also enjoyed going shopping. We'll end up with a society with less and less human contact, which is bad for everybody's mental health.

Re: bank Access for the Elderly
- Puzzled (9th Oct 2023 - 21:42:13)
@Penny
Whilst this is a nice story, I"m puzzled why standing in a queue is deemed a social occasion?
Here's an idea: why not phone his friends and invite them for a coffee or walk in the park.
Before leaving the house, do the transaction online or in the app, which takes 5 minutes.
That way, the remaining 55 minutes can be spent having a proper catch up with friends.
@PR I'm also puzzled as to what transactions have to be done in person - when they can all be done online or over the phone, now. Speaking to somebody doesn't change any outcome (loan/mortgage decisions etc) and bank staff aren't allowed to give an "advised" service.
Do you really need to talk to *bank* staff for the social aspect? Why not save the time and spend it with your friends or family?
Don't have any? Join a club or society.

- Joe (10th Oct 2023 - 09:43:47)
“puzzled” you sound very young and not living on your own. Firstly not everyone in this area has good broadband connection- I certainly do not- secondly not all elderly people could cope with a banking app or doing transfers etc online.
The elderly are subjected to enough scam attempts by phone and in person, adding emails and mobile phones to the list of possible avenues they can be defrauded is something they do not want or need.
Of course not all elderly are like that but most I know of over 80 and having not used technology when they were younger would find banking on line with numbers and pass words to remember, very confusing. I use mobile banking and once had a transaction that could not be done without going to a branch.

- S (10th Oct 2023 - 10:13:41)
@Joe
agree I too had mobile banking and was asked to go into a branch to make a transaction.
&
My elderly mother (95) can't use mobile or online banking doesn't have the technology anyway.
She isn't interested in this option but prefers to visit in person.
Barclays are esp helpful with the elderly population,as are some others.
The whole trip is a 'social' with everyone she interacts with and it helps with her quality of daily life.
@Puzzled how old are you may I ask ?

Also, about 6% of the population here in the UK have Dyscalculia, it can present itself in up to seven different ways, and affects all ages where numeracy ability would be expected.
In contrast to Dyslexia little or nothing is done for those with this.
Anything numerical for me is a challenge, particularly on the when requested to enter multiple digit sequences, such as account numbers, with utiltiy companies as well as my bank. I feel disadvantaged with the ongoing closure of High Street banks, and being fobbed of with most people prefer on line or phone banking. One size does not fit all, and many people have different requirements in many circumstances.

Puzzled-I would say you are lacking in empathy rather than being puzzled. Penny put pretty clearly the way a lot of older people feel-it's not your place to question those feelings, unless you have some greater insight which you aren't sharing with us. Perhaps you are a psychologist or an occupational therapist?
