It’s October 21st people

Quite agree C, couldn’t believe we had to put up with them already last night.
Me - you wouldn’t love them if you had a terrified dog and cat at home! It’s about time they were banned from private sale.

We used to have a dog that used to try and dig a hole in the corner of the room to try and escape when neighbours had fireworks. We could put loud music on or try other things but nothing helped. We are also surrounded by fields with horses in but one or two people still have had fireworks in the past without telling the neighbours. You wonder what planet they are on ( or whether they are down from London, identifiable by the fact they wear wellies even in dry weather)

There are silent ones to buy which would help pets. It is all winter long and sometimes at summer parties.

Funny Sam, you don’t seem to give a monkeys if a dog scares other people when out and about and off a lead? But if someones fireworks scare a dog….

Elle, please don’t make assumptions! I am absolutely not that Sam! I do not agree with most things she/he says and the rather angry way she/he says it! My dog is on a lead on her walks but that is irrelevant to this post, we are talking about fireworks and the fact that they are a menace - to pets, to wildlife and to the environment.

Never mind October 21st, it's over 400 years since Guy Fawkes, isn't it time to call it a day ? ~ Fireworks are annoying. a waste of money, polluting, distressing, and should be banned - just go and set fire to a few £ 50 pound notes, or better still give your firework cash to charity.

Just wondering dogs are trained to accept gun noises and horses. Gun dogs out on shoot don’t turn a hair . Training is the key ok some dogs that have lived a life away from noise may take a while but it’s worth a try.

I'd rather train the inconsiderate people who have fireworks without telling their neighbours

Dog owners- I have two dogs both living close to the firing ranges. One dog couldn't care about either noise whereas the other has no problem with gunshot but hates fireworks. Both dogs trained the same.

@ Dog owners The content of your post is simply not true. I have been fortunate that all the dogs I have owned have never worried about fireworks, but I have seen dogs that are terrified and it is very distressing for them and their owners. It has absolutely nothing to do with training. My uncle had a farm and used to go shooting. In his lifetime he owned several gun dogs, all treated and trained the same way. Two of those dogs were terrified of gun fire and could not be trained to work with the shoot. Luckily for the two dogs my uncle kept them as pets. I think all fireworks should be banned except for those in public displays where proper safeguards are adhered to and advance warning is given to all those who live nearby so that people with animals can take the appropriate precautions. Fireworks terrify most horses, as well as some cats and dogs - goodness knows how the wildlife cope – do a bunk I suspect. @Elle please do not try to turn this post into another rant about dogs being off their leads. @ Passfield Resident I completely agree with your post.PR agree with you as will. However if the private sale of fireworks cannot been banned, please could people act responsibly and with consideration around private firework displays.

It does not follow that dogs who are trained will accept both noises. My dog does not turn a hair at gunfire if it is a fair distance whereas gunfire close by and fireworks he cannot cope with. Their hearing is very sensitive.

Roll on the firework season I say, the louder and longer the better! They probably sell earplugs for dogs on Amazon along with a dog push buggy if you’re interested! Or maybe some white noise playing in their bedroom might soothe them back to sleep.
Also if you’re out and about and your dog has a pop due to the loud noises can you please clean it up! It’s tiring having to keep avoiding it when out and about.

Taking the dogs out of the equation as many people obviously have a problem, Frederick for example, this is also a problem for PTSD sufferers. Not a problem if advised, eg organised displays, but a real problem when unexpected.
For the record I like firework displays and most people seem to be happy with organised displays, its the back garden ones (which lets be honest are always a bit pathetic) that come as a surprise to people that are the problem.

Well said Pete. I think Frederick is just trying to get a reaction out of people so best ignored. For the record the human ear can also be damaged by loud noise and I know someone who now has tinnitus as a result of the loud bangs at a display.
