Carnival
- Russ Ellis (24th Oct 2023 - 11:55:37)

Just to say a big big thank you to the new carnival committee for carrying on our fantastic NIGHT carnival. Having taken part from the early fifties in rain and shine it beats anything else around. So pleased it’s carrying on with new enthusiasm have a go you soon warm up if it’s cold perhaps a hot toddy or two. In it again this year so see you on Saturday night.

Re: Carnival
- Me (24th Oct 2023 - 15:07:14)

Yes second that wouldn’t be the same in the summer. Best night out in the year.

Re: Carnival
- Helen (24th Oct 2023 - 16:57:21)

I can't WAIT for Carnival night, takes me back to being little, still feel the same buzz of excitement more than 40 years later!

Re: Carnival
- Russ (27th Oct 2023 - 09:51:59)

Only a day left to finish building your floats, hopefully the weather will be kind. Hope all you lovely people and families will participate it’s a fun evening for all it doesn’t take much to enter something just needs a bit of inspiration and enthusiasm. See you Saturday.

Re: Carnival
- The MAD company (27th Oct 2023 - 11:40:49)

Re: Carnival
- B (28th Oct 2023 - 21:19:24)

My heart felt admiration, thanks and gratitude o everyone who’s worked on the Carnival.

The fireworks display was absolutely magic

I BLOODY LOVE LIPHOOK

Re: Carnival
- Richard (28th Oct 2023 - 22:04:16)

The fireworks were not magic - I now have a traumatised dog and morons are still letting them off after the end of the 'official' trauma session.

I was so glad when it was announced the carnival would end as it would have been an end to this torture.

Then it bloody came back.

Re: Carnival
- Gr (28th Oct 2023 - 22:40:10)

Thank you for a wonderful carnival
Crowd in the rec enjoyed the fireworks lots off oohs and ahhhs

Re: Carnival
- Rouse (28th Oct 2023 - 23:07:12)

Oh dear Richard.

You have known about this for weeks so why didn’t you take your dog out of the area for the duration of the annual tradition?
It’s been well published with the timings. You could have taken your beloved pet out for the evening to avoid the trauma. So I’d suggest you’re the main problem for your dog. All you had to do was to park just outside the road closure, walk your dog to the car at 845, drive out of the area and back 30 mins later. If you can’t drive them I’m sure you know at least a person that can.

Dont blame this tradition, blame yourself.

Re: Carnival
- PR (28th Oct 2023 - 23:18:53)

Richard

So totally agree - well posted

Re: Carnival
- Rachael (28th Oct 2023 - 23:31:51)

Absolutely agree Richard

Re: Carnival
- Richard (29th Oct 2023 - 05:29:36)

Rouse

Dog doesn't like travelling in the car.

Also, why should I have to? Just so that Liphook can have an unneeded explosives-fest with accompanying flashes and bangs (which to my mind is tantamount to what a fireworks display is)

Fireworks serve no useful purpose, they pollute the atmosphere, they are unnecessarily disruptive and have been proven to trigger PTSD in people

Plus they are a waste of money.

The sooner they are banned the better

I have no axe to going with the Carnival or the procession - it's the bloody fireworks.

And in a week it'll be happening again with Bonfire Night (another throwback that celebrates an anachronism of the past)

Re: Carnival
- M.O (29th Oct 2023 - 07:59:12)

Richard, maybe next year you should do what Rouse suggested !!!! The same to all others who have a problem with this over 100yr old tradition we have in liphook, long may it continue.
What an amazing job all the carnival volunteers did. Well done and thankyou to you all.

Re: Carnival
- M (29th Oct 2023 - 09:25:03)

Richard, Rachael, PR et all of the same thoughts.
Just about every year for 100 years the Liphook community has had a carnival with bonfire and fireworks (originally started by the "Bonfire Boys" so the clue might be in the name?)
Fireworks are not illegal but the inappropriate use of them is and I'm pretty certain that the Carnival Committee in no way inappropriately let off any fireworks last night.
As Rouse so correctly commented, all those with an issue with fireworks have had months to plan last night (some could say they've had 100 years!!!) and had every opportunity to overcome any negative affects from the one night in the year that Liphook has it's carnival and fireworks.
If you can't accommodate your animals needs indoors then you need to remove them from the environment, and if you have a dog then you must be able to walk them so you would have every opportunity to remove them from the area.
To say "why should I" is the most selfish and un-community minded comment you could say. Why should the whole of Liphook pander to your own issues when it is you that are responsible for your animal.
On top of all the above let us not forget the amount of joy and smiles the Carnival and Fireworks provide for Liphook residents, and most importantly the fundraising for local organisations it also provides.
Long may it continue, big thanks to those that organise it, take part and watch it and don't forget.......IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN IN A YEAR, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

Re: Carnival
- Russ Ellis (29th Oct 2023 - 09:54:27)

Well, took part again got soaked to the skin but it was as usual fantastic. Carnival Committee and all the helpers a massive big thanks wonderful job .

Rain doesn’t stop play, not in liphook, all the floats were great and the atmosphere and enthusiasm was just like the old days thanks to everyone.

LONG MAY IT CONTINUE.. Just a thought to the people that had a problem with their dogs what would they do if they lived in London or any other big city around the world on New Year’s Eve fireworks for an hour or more and very loud.

Anyway a MASSIVE BIG THANKS AGAIN To The CARNIVAL COMMITTEE.

Re: Carnival
- C.G (29th Oct 2023 - 10:22:56)

I am not a supporter of this boring event , but don't understand why it's held at this time of year? When I lived in Somerset there carnival was held in July. Does anyone consider the volunteer's and police who are out in torrential rain ? Utterly ridiculous.

Re: Carnival
- Jen (29th Oct 2023 - 10:24:25)

I agree with M. The fireworks are an annual event of which we are all aware and there's never any doubt as to the date or time, as they're always at the end of the Carnival, which is always on the last night of British Summer Time.

Re: Carnival
- Russ (29th Oct 2023 - 11:12:05)

CG Bridgewater carnival I think the biggest in uk is all day and Night and the night is the most popular and I have seen it pour with rain all night but they carry on as we do it doesn’t rain every year it’s liphooks tradition and most people don’t find it boring as you can see by the turn out of spectators in the rain supporting a fantastic event.

Re: Carnival
- passfield resident (29th Oct 2023 - 16:09:44)

CG. You can get rain at any time of the year. As to you thinking the carnival is boring- what alternative community events can you suggest that you would prefer? What community events or organisations do you contribute to?

Re: Carnival
- lee (29th Oct 2023 - 17:04:37)

Well done to the carnival committee 5 BIG STARS. My family all enjoyed it again. Rain can't stop the play. See you next year WELL DONE AGAIN

Re: Carnival
- Simon (29th Oct 2023 - 18:45:17)

CG - really? I lived in Somerset for many years also and attended carnivals in Bridgewater, Weston super Mare, Highbridge plus others and they were all October / November.
This years Bridgewater carnival is next weekend:

Re: Carnival
- Dave (29th Oct 2023 - 19:19:10)

Fireworks were impressive (can see where all the money went) but disappointed by the number of floats again. Paid bands etc cannot hide the fact that the carnival nowadays is not a patch on the wonderful events in the past. Time to put it to rest I think

Re: Carnival
- JL (29th Oct 2023 - 19:26:41)

Richard and CG - Maybe you're right. Let's ban any event at which the stupid inhabitants of Liphook might possibly enjoy themselves. Let's ban the Carnival, sporting events, duck races, Bramshott Open Gardens, ban Christmas, and abolish Bank Holidays. While we're at it, why not ban dog ownership, which is a selfish pursuit. Let's all be sensible (and miserable).

Re: Carnival
- Oldie (29th Oct 2023 - 21:26:48)

Don’t be so miserable Dave or is that what keeps you going. Carnival was great getting back to the good old days new faces new people getting involved. Future looks great another 120 years on the cards.

Re: Carnival
- gareth j rees (29th Oct 2023 - 21:55:08)

super job by the carnival committee

we had a great time at the carnival and loved the marching band and the drummers

it's a great evening and a tradition well worth preserving

btw richard - have a day off

Re: Carnival
- MikeT (30th Oct 2023 - 01:42:58)

So sad to see such negative feedback against the background of so much work being put in by so few....... and after what seems like traditional weather for the carnival over the 20+ years we've lived here.

Congrats to everyone who put in the effort and made it a success as always. Just a shame that those inconsiderate people with noisy pets created so much noise

Re: Carnival
- Pete (30th Oct 2023 - 08:13:00)

You know what, myself and a lot of other people put a lot of hard work and long hours to make the carnival work. I was up at 6 on Saturday drill in hand and finished about 10:30pm, added to that are the weeks of work leading up to the day.
To read such downbeat comments is a real kick in the teeth to people who are trying their best to give the village a bit of fun and community atmosphere.
Luckily the smiling faces and dancing in the crowd more than make up for the miserable posters on here. If you've got nothing nice to say keep your mouth closed.

Re: Carnival
- KM (30th Oct 2023 - 08:21:44)

Such a lovely evening at the carnival. Huge thanks to all involved. Long may it continue. To all the miserable moaners who try to suck the joy out of everything, please get a life before it's too late.

Re: Carnival
- Ian (30th Oct 2023 - 08:25:10)

Sorry, I thought that other than the fireworks and a couple of floats it was a little underwhelming and just £2700 raised is very disappointing and I think will financially make the carnival unviable in future . Big rethink needed for the event to survive.

Re: Carnival
- Joe (30th Oct 2023 - 08:47:11)

I think the fireworks and or carnival are subsidised by a grant from the Parish Council it is obviously a very expensive event to stage.

Re: Carnival
- Russ (30th Oct 2023 - 09:55:35)

Thanks Pete a real trooper don’t listen to the usual posters that moan about everything.

Re: Carnival
- Jm (30th Oct 2023 - 10:09:45)

CG. Did you move to Liphook because you were bored in Somerset. If you are still bored maybe it’s time for another move.
Dave/Ian. Agree, there have been great carnivals in the past but this years was still a great credit to all those involved. Why don’t you both contribute next year and enter a float. Grumpy Old Men would be an appropriate theme.

Re: Carnival
- Paul (30th Oct 2023 - 13:41:25)

Richard, dogs serve no purpose, only s*** and make loads of noise 365 days a year - fireworks only once a year get over it.

Re: Carnival
- Helen (30th Oct 2023 - 14:33:53)

SPEECHLESS reading some of these comments
Moaning about the firework display, not enough floats, not enough money raised, wrong time of year, seriously?

I love the carnival and the fact we still have it makes it very special no matter how big or small!

The moaners must all be new to the area because a real local would never dream to say a word about our fantastic tradition.

It was a great night
Long Live Liphook Carnival

Bugger off grumpy people and find something real to complain about!

Re: Carnival
- PR (30th Oct 2023 - 16:46:28)

Helen,

Speechless - yes at your vitriolic comments, you are the one who needs to ********** off and get a life !

Re: Carnival
- dave (30th Oct 2023 - 17:02:21)

@Helen, lived in the area all my life as did my parents, as do my kids and my grandkids. I am entitled to my opinions even if you disagree with them

Re: Carnival
- Pete (31st Oct 2023 - 07:58:08)

PR- I would hardly call Helens post Vitriolic in fact yours is much more so. Next festival coming up is Christmas maybe you should ask for a dictionary.

Re: Carnival
- Penny Williamson (31st Oct 2023 - 16:22:35)

I completely agree with your post Dave. Helen has made an unsubstantiated and inaccurate statement when she said that "The moaners must all be new to the area because a real local would never dream to say a word about our fantastic tradition." because you are the living proof having lived in Liphook all your life as did your parents, as do your kids and your grandkids. All too often sweeping assertions are made with no real knowledge or proof.

Re: Carnival
- Jon (31st Oct 2023 - 19:15:44)

Dave, you say in this thread "its time to put it to rest" yet in another thread yourself and sidekick Penny are suggesting a summer carnival, so to quote Bucks Fizz, its time for making your mind up. As a resident of Liphook for nearly 50yrs, I don't disagree that the carnival perhaps doesn't have the vibe of the 80's or 90's, but that is my youthful recollections impacting on me. If you don't feel its on par with the past or the weather is unbearable, then stay at home and watch strictly, rugby or whatever floats your boat, totally respect that. Feel that that the thread originally posted praising the committee by Russ Ellis, himself a veteran of Liphook who does much for LIB, has been lost in time, like tears in rain.

Re: Carnival
- Resident (31st Oct 2023 - 19:38:43)

"PTSD", "trauma", "triggered".

The reason we have so many moaning, detracting begrudgers is because people have became adults without being told to stick their selfish attitudes where the sun doesn't shine. Because now everyone is allowed be offended by something, and in fact it's a badge of honour for many.

Well done to the Carnival Committee. Well done to everyone who took part in any way. Well done to anyone who helps keep something alive that would be lamented if it was lost. Damn the professionally offended and cynical.

Re: Carnival
- Russ Ellis (1st Nov 2023 - 11:00:13)

Well it’s all over for this year, I’m still clearing up from the float. So pleased that most people thoroughly enjoyed it that’s what it’s done for enjoyment.

Yes I’m a veteran never thought I would be first time in with Bramshott school early fifties and haven’t missed many since. Taken part with about six different organisations throughout the years.

Hopefully after this year’s success a few more will participate next year all the local clubs football cricket clubs etc. I was part of Ripsley cricket club for many years winning several cups. And had many years with my family floats The Motley Crew push and Pull its not difficult just an idea then build on it.

Anyway roll on next year hopefully better weather but rain won’t stop it all part of the fun again a big thanks to all that took part and made it a success.

Re: Carnival
- Jm (1st Nov 2023 - 12:48:24)

CG. There was an item on BBC radio 2 this morning, 1/11/23, reference the Somerset winter carnival, not July, winter. The organisers promised it wouldn’t be boring like the one you went to.

Re: Carnival
- Steve (1st Nov 2023 - 13:21:38)

In defence of CG, he did not specify which Somerset Carnival, I am sure they have plenty....especially in July.

Re: Carnival
- Penny Williamson (1st Nov 2023 - 14:10:44)

Jon I don’t really understand your first sentence ie “Dave, you say in this thread "its time to put it to rest" yet in another thread yourself and sidekick Penny are suggesting a summer carnival, so to quote Bucks Fizz, its time for making your mind up.” Firstly I am not Dave’s “sidekick” as you so delicately put it or anyone else’s. Secondly all I have said is that it might be better to consider having the carnival in the summer or early autumn. I don’t expect everyone to agree with me but I do expect people to respect my right to say it. I think we still have free speech in this country at the moment anyway. I still standby my criticism of Helen’s sweeping and inaccurate statement. It never ceases to amaze me how some people take any sort of criticism personally and react by being rude and disrespectful.

Re: Carnival
- Pete (1st Nov 2023 - 17:00:13)

Russ- Just cleaned up the last of my pile today also :)

Re: Carnival
- Russ (1st Nov 2023 - 21:40:04)

Dedication Pete hope to see you next year have a good rest but wasn’t it worth it .

Re: Carnival
- Carole (3rd Nov 2023 - 15:59:53)

To those of you who moan about our carnival, get out there in 2024,dress up, build a float, help Marshall, stop being miserable spoil sports.
It is a superb event, when my husband used to tow the Deers Hut float, once our carnival was over he would tow to Tichfield for their carnival. All our walkers and helpers would trundle to Tichfield and have more fun. Those were the days and we were younger then but all you youngsters in the village need to participate. It’s good fun, even in the rain.
Stop moaning and put thinking caps on for next year

Re: Carnival
- SteveC (3rd Nov 2023 - 16:51:58)

Why is it that so many people on this thread accuse those of a differing opinion of moaning? Those that feel the carnival in its present form has had its day just have a different opinion, they are not moaning. So please stop moaning about those that don't agree with you :-)

Re: Carnival
- Neal (3rd Nov 2023 - 20:52:02)

Hi, does anyone have any pics or video of the 4 T-REX dinosaurs that were in the carnival this year ?
