Fly tipping and littering
- C (17th Dec 2023 - 14:03:04)
I see some genius has decided to dispose of their shower door next to a hedge on the Headley Road… Surely I can’t be the only person utterly depressed by the amount of rubbish everywhere? It’s just so ugly. (And before the attacks come, yes I go litter picking frequently so I do try and do something proactive). But it’s a losing battle.

There should not be any attacks on someone pointing out littering, so just popped along to say I agree. Fly tipping = scumbags, mainly. You can pretty much tell everything about a tradie when you spot a shower-door thrown at the side of the road ....

Thanks for the support Paul. Glad to know other people are incensed by it too!

No attack from me, but this is where I wish policy makers could look at services holistically. I got a survey recently from the council asking me if I'd like to pay more tax or have reduced services. They made a point to highlight they would get less central government funding. No option for them to earn their pay and find efficiencies, play politics with their party mates in Westminster to find solutions.
Maybe the budget dealing with clean up from fly tipping comes from a different cost centre than than running the recycling centres, and so charging for waste disposal looks to reduce the budget for the owner of that budget area. Cleaning up fly tipping may increase the cost on to another budget owner but that's their problem. This is before you get to indirect and social costs.
Unfortunately, making it inconvenient and expensive to responsibly dispose of waste will lead to a portion of people resorting to fly tipping.

DIY waste being free at the tip is only partially true. You can take 2 rubble bags or 1 bulky item for free each trip, and you can make no more than 4 trips in 4 weeks.
I'm in the process of ripping out a small bathroom right now. The toilet counts as 2 items because the bowel and cistern are counted separately, the sink counts as 2 items as the basin and pedestal are counted separately. That's my limit reached already and I would have to make 4 trips. That just leaves the approx 10 rubble bags full of removed tiles unaccounted for.
On the surface the claim can be made that the charges have stopped, but in reality you either have to pay or make multiple trips and probably still end up paying. I've just decided to pay to have a skip as vlaue my time and can afford to do so.
I can understand why some people would fly tip though.

There are no excuses or else we could excuse everything.
I can understand why people might not want to spend £1000 on car insurance or similar on driving lessons, I can understand why someone might want to nab a £100,000 Rolex watch that some old fool is walking down Knightsbridge wearing on his wrist, none of that matters, it's just about greed, selfishness, laziness, disrespect for the community, there are lots of legal options for disposing of your junk, if it's got a value sell it, if it fits in the bin dump it, if you want the council will remove bulky items for a fee, hire a skip, contact a licenced waste remover, drive it to the dump yourself, ask a friend, every option has a cost to somebody, but if it's your waste why shouldn't you pay the cost, not us, and dumping it on the highway is wrong and disgusting!

I don't condone fly tipping in any way. However the actions of the council in charging for certain types of waste and forcing people to pre book when using the Bordon dump is bound to increase incidents of fly tipping.
The easier (no booking) and cheaper(free) the dump becomes the less fly tipping you will get.
Now I just have to wait for the howls of protest from the lovely people on talkback.

This country needs to adopt a zero tolerance policy with huge fines imposed for injustices of whatever nature. The money from the fines would pay to oversee such a program and, hopefully, would discourage the offences. Sadly, there is an element of society that has no self respect, respect for others or for the environment.

Booking takes 2 mins on the phone or via web site hardly a hardship. Having to book is no excuse for fly tipping

I don't think the issue with booking the tip is that it's hard to do, as i agree its very easy. It more that if you have a spare half hour to clear the garden or whatever, you can't just simply pop to the tip like you could on a tuesday afternoon. Understand the weekend maybe but booking for midweek and having some stood checking number plates... is it really neccessary!

Yet again AF and the booking system, trolling us all against the tide of people whom prefer it. Have a search through older posts by AF either started or taken over by AF on a single person quest about the booking system.
Ruining this site for everyone

Sam, sorry if I upset you but this is a site where people express their views and opinions. I know that I am in a minority on this matter of booking but doesn't make my views any less valid.
I have said previously I will not start any threads on the subject of booking and have not done so.
Expressing a view you do not agree with is NOT ruining the site.

AF, by infiltrating a thread about fly tipping, and mentioning free booking
again you sort of contradict your statement about not starting threads on the booking system. I think Sam, we are all stuck in Liphook's version of "Groundhog Day", can anyone break the loop?

Absolutely right about local litter. Isn't the council responsible for roadside litter though? I have been picking up litter between Rake and Liphook as it really distresses me too. I watched the other day while they were resurfacing our road. They did a super job but then before leaving I watched the roadworker tip the entire contents of his car onto the road he had just fixed up!!
If anyone is interested in litter picking with me, do please contact me. christine.mckirdy@googlemail.com.
I'd feel safer doing the roadside stuff if someone joined me.
Good post. And very relevant.
