State Pension
- PR (14th Feb 2024 - 15:51:09)
I received a letter from HMRC today about my Tax Coding
State Pension £ 12665 ( My only income )
Personal Allowance £ 12570
Taxable Income £ 95
In the words of Terry Wogan " Is it me ? "
Or maybe I've just missed the point.

I understand your point- it is a classic case of giving with one hand and taking with the other.
Why not set up one of those 'go fund me' pages to see if you can raise the £19 you will owe the taxman

The simple truth is that this country is broke, no ifs or buts it's like it is due to all the mismanagement of the present government. The personal tax allowance from 2021- 2028 will remain at £12,570, any increase in the state pension and you'll pay more tax. It's all well and good the Tories stating inflation has come down to 4% but they don't realise people are massively struggling with everyday bills. Energy prices are still high and won't be coming down to the level before the Russian Ukrainian war started even though energy companies are buying it much cheaper. Food prices are still far too high as well.
What is the point of raising the state pension if the personal tax allowance will remain the same? The sooner we have a general election the better.....and for those of you who pipe up saying "Keir Starmer won't do any better", would you rather have another 4 years of Tory rule where they only cater for the rich? As I stated, this country is broke.

PC I think that the fact that 9.25 million people aged between16-64 are economically inactive and not looking for work might have something to do with it.. One more example and there are many, the train drivers who earn upwards of £60,000 striking for more money. It is easy to blame the Government and I along with many others agree that their track record is pretty awful, but the public, or at least some of us, must take responsibility as well. Sadly I don't think any of the other parties can do any better. Hard work to some, indeed any sort of work, and it is not just a few, is an anathema. Sad but true.

Totally agree penny it’s not all the governments fault this generation seems to want to work less and less short hours for maximum wages. Go around the country pubs full even in liphook people spending money as if it’s going out of fashion. Yes we could do with a much stronger government they seem frightened to lay down the law pandering to the idiots. I don’t think the Labour Party are going to be any better the are to frightened of the unions as we can see rail employees still on strike and earning massive money and that will escalate and spread through out the other unions so they will bankrupt us again so we can’t win.

- Facts (17th Feb 2024 - 21:49:09)
Penny, you claim 9 million people are unwilling to work. That is simply incorrect.
Of that 9 million:
Over 2 million are students
Nearly 2 million are caring for sick or elderly family members
Over 1 million are early retiree
1.5 million are over 50 and suffering from ill health
But don’t let the truth get in the way of an ill-informed rant on talkback

Facts I did not say "unwilling" to work. I said not actively seeking work. The number remains the same 9.28 million. The breakdown can change all the time. For the record I do not rant.

In response to Facts (I’m guessing not your real name and just a clever way for you stay anonymous!), based on your numbers there’s still 2.5 million wasters who we could do without in the country. Disposing of those 2.5 million would free up money for everyone.
You’re very clever Facts.

Disposing of those 2.5 million? How is that achieved?
No one mentioned the masses of people in the North, born in one isolated place with only 1 job per 30 people, it’s a fact many areas of the country just doesn’t have any jobs available, how do you expect a skint person to either afford to move and or commute 60 miles to a job paying nothing.
The problem as always is at the top, yet we always vote for them after the sun runs a story about Labour being communists etc. Am not a labour supporter but we are currently led by a group of donkeys. And it’s us that does it, we vote for them over and over.

£12665 Is an interesting and enviable state pension income considering that the most anyone can get is actually just over £10000.

- Old Bloke (22nd Feb 2024 - 15:48:00)
People born before 6th April 1951 qualify for what is referred to as the 'Old State Pension ' which is more than the current rate.
Not to be confused with the derisory current pension.
And it all depends on years worked and contributions paid.

Just an update my pension is £9118.20 and I was born in 1941 . Just wondering where all these big pensions come from. I have had to take a private pension and pay for it all my life to make my retirement reasonable could not live on my state pension.
