Pcc election
- Pete Bean (5th Apr 2024  19:04:38)

WHY ?

The expense is considerable..for no real benefit
The chief constable should do the same job

It is exceedingly expensive yes I agree. The whole point of them in the beginning was that the police should become more accountable for their actions and mistakes but I do not think that has happened. The current incumbent is a Tory politician. It should not be a political appointment.

I don't believe Donna Jones is currently a politician, she once was a member of Portsmouth City Council.

I think she has done a good job, with an ongoing programme re opening Police Stations and increasing the number of Police Officers in Hampshire. Additionally it is now possible to directly contact your local officer by email.

I agree things could be better, but sadly it is the whole country which is broken.

I am in agreement. The person elected should have police or similar experience.

To become elected to Portsmouth City council you do have to be a local politician and be selected by your own party to run for office. She may not ever have been an MP but still involved in politics.

The PCC role is a cash-cow for whoever gets in. Literally a non-job, it's not needed and is a waste of money given the state of policing (lack of) in the area. Zero police experience required. In this case, it's "jobs for the girls".

It is a waste of money having an election for just one thing, if we need a PCC which is questionable they should be elected at same time as council or general elections.

You are quite right, PR, when you say that the whole country is broken.

But you are quite wrong when you say that Donna Jones is not currently a politician. Of course she is - she was the Conservative Parliamentary candidate for Portsmouth South in the 2019 General Election and would be trying to do that now if she thought she had any chance of being elected!

And how can you give her any credit for reopening police stations and increasing the number of police officers when it was her party who closed them and sacked 20,000 policemen in the first place!
The police should never be run by politicians especially when they are so often the criminals. There seems to be an MP arrested every week now.

Donna Jones is listed as the Conservative candidate....
