Next government - Unimpressed (26th Apr 2024 - 12:31:04) If we have a change in government and labour have a clear majority looks like we are in for re-nationalisation of the railways and other companies so going back to the old days. They say they are going to follow Jeremy Corbyns policy of nationalising services and give the unions more power. Just seems it has been tried before and not worked when labour were in they ran the railways and cut a lot of routes and strikes were a regular occurrence no investment leading to a run down system. If this is going to be the policy of labour I’m not impressed. If they let the unions run riot we won’t have any manufacturing or services they completely ruined our car industry and ship building so if labour are taking us back to those dark days we are doomed.

Re: Next government - PR (26th Apr 2024 - 14:31:28) Britain's Railway Network was destroyed by Richard Beeching at the behest of the Conservative Minister for Transport Ernest Marples in the early 1960's All Utility Companies, electricity, gas, and especially those who provide water should be nationalised, the government should also provide a state run bank with branches that are actually open, and a state run Vehicle Insurance provider to curtail absurd increases, and link insurance to car tax to obviate those who pay neither. The Railways should also be re-nationalised.

Re: Next government - Sam (26th Apr 2024 - 15:48:02) When someone rolls out Jeremy Corbyn name out its usually a Daily Mail reading Tory who believes supporting the Torys makes them an aspirational go getter and posh. Jeremy Corbyn the name is used to win votes for the Tories as in invokes a crisis idea that he is a red Joseph Stalin who is going to take us back to soviet times. Jeremy Corbyn is 74 years old and finished so move on, Jeremy Corbyn is irrelevant utterly irrelevant and pointless bringing the name up. The Tories sold off British Telecom, the remainder of Cable & Wireless and British Aerospace, Britoil, British Gas, British Steel, British Petroleum, Rolls Royce, British Airways, water and electricity, British Coal, as well as electricity generating companies Powergen and National Power, and British Rail, then the Post Office. They put the money in their own pockets, the people they sold it to are their toff mates and when they exit parliament they receive a job. Have a look at the list of the family silver they sold off and ask yourself how much better those things are now? Is the rail service great? No all the money goes to shareholders, the rail service is practically nationalised as it is for our tax money is being used to keep it running whilst the shareholders run off with the money. The Post office? The water companies pouring turds into our rivers? The NHS is next for the Tory’s that dog will not change its spots and they are deliberately “defunding” the NHS so its ready to get privatised. You talk about dark old days, look at today, look at now, the country is in crisis, and everything sold by the Torys is a disaster and owned by foreigners, another state could switch the lights off tomorrow. Today is the Dark days. Whilst am not one for nationalisation across the board, nor am I one for overly unionising everything if you think big business is your friend your wrong, no private CEO has any citizens back, they want into your wallet on a subscription format to drain all the cash you bust your backside for. There are no examples of private businesses looking for anything other than as much money as possible and the Torys are self-serving facilitators of that. Finally, the unions, yes at times bad but without them we wouldn’t have Annual leave, Sick pay, A minimum wage, A two day weekend, Maternity leave, Protection from workplace discrimination, Redundancy pay, Health and safety in the workplace, Workplace pensions.

Re: Next government - passfield resident (26th Apr 2024 - 20:47:29) Unimpressed. What would you do to improve the railways, which are in a pathetic state? When you travel abroad and use up to date, fast, reliable, clean trains you feel embarassed at the state of our system. The current government have already taken large chunks of the system back under state control in any case.Shame the Post Office isn't still state run instead of being the lying, cheating, cynical business it has become.

Re: Next government - AF (27th Apr 2024 - 09:23:31) Sam are you forgetting how Gordon Brown sold the British gold reserves when gold was at the lowest price point in decades and has since gone up by a massive amount. He also did a massive tax raid on all our pensions which crashed a number of company pension schemes and the ones who survived had to ditch the final salary schemes. And passfield resident, as for the post office which you are slating the problem is of course the Horizon computer system, this was brought in at the insistence of the government so that the fraud in girocheques could be stopped and then when the post office had spent all the money on the system the government scrapped the girocheque system anyway. For the under 40's girocheques was the way unemployment benefit was paid.

Why is it that you always quote the daily mail when you want to slag of a post . Other people DO have other opinions especially those that have lived through all the governments and seen it all you will find out at your cost the money has to come from somewhere that means us the general public. As for the unions they did a good job the in the past things have changed dramatically they are now obsolete laws are in place to protect workers all they are doing now is keep pushing for higher and higher wages which pushes up the cost of living a vicious circle there is absolutely no need for the train strikes the drivers are already on fabulous wages it’s just political as said they need to be disbanding and perhaps a different way of negotiating. Things need to change and I don’t think the Labour Party are up to it they are to controlled by the unions.

Are you suggesting they didn't lie to try and cover up known faults in their accounting system?To say what happened was not the fault of the Post Office would be ridiculous. Try speaking to a few postmen and women and see what they say about their employer-I have and it's mostly bad. I had a family member who worked for the Post Office for virtually his whole working life when it was much better run (ie a long time ago). He was proud of his job. Now it is appalingly badly and dishonestly run. This is a company whose first thought when an employee committed suicide because of the company's disgusting treatment of him was to look for a public relations lawyer (confirmed the other day in the enquiry).What planet are you on?

You are mixing up two separate companies there is the Post Office which as the name suggests deals with Post Offices, and the Royal Mail that deals with delivering mail. There's also Parcelforce but we won't go into that company. They did all used to be one big company along with BT but that was a long time ago and they are all completely separate companies. Now Post Office used to be a very profitable company but lost lots of the government contracts such as paying out a number of benefits, selling car tax discs and other things, that is why so many of the main branches have closed and become sub post offices including Liphook. The Horizon system failed but it was an attempt to keep the business going. Neither me or you know who knew what when so we need to let the public enquiry decide that. As for Royal Mail they have also had there problems, which again were not their fault, first of all there were falling letter volumes due to the internet among other things. However the main issue was the loss of the monopoly and being forced by the EU to open up to other companies, indeed having to deliver the mail other companies collected for virtually zero profit. This meant they have lost the profit making part of the business, which is why Stamp prices have increased, collections have been reduced, no early morning deliveries and we may even lose Saturday delivery soon. This is solely an EU decision. I worked in the Royal Mail for 19 years in Customer Services, HR and training so I do know what I'm talking about.
