Police and Crime Commissioner - Paul Robinson (2nd May 2024  15:27:23) This morning I did something I have never done before ... I spoiled my vote by writing 'NONE OF THE ABOVE' My reason for doing this is that I believe that the Police and Crime Commissioner should be completely independent of allegiance to any political party. Re: Police and Crime Commissioner - Joe (2nd May 2024  16:27:03) For those of you who have not voted yet today and believe like Paul that the post should be abolished or made non political it is in the manifesto of 2 of the candidates the candidate from the Lib Dem’s and the candidate from the justice and anti corruption party. They both want to work towards getting the post abolished. It is a complete waste of tax payers money as was the leaflet on behalf of the incumbent Donna Jones. The question has been raised what do any of the prospective candidates know about policing? Well Donna Jones did not have any experience in this area when she took the post.

Re: Police and Crime Commissioner - Sam (2nd May 2024  22:00:51) No one cares anymore, politics is a circus side show pretending we have rights and powers, I doubt anyone will turn up to vote for anything. If we go back 10 or 20 years and slag off the politicians of those days I bet 100% of people would want those sort of people back compared to today. i.e. its gone massively downhill, its just lies and influence now, the truth no longer matters when its up against the first to lie. It time for revolution, or if your not up for that its time to establish that votes count and decimate the crew whom has had a handle on the wheel for so long so they have just a dozen MP's left, its time for the voters to leave a mark on all political classes that we wont be accepting this going forward. Other major nearby countries have liberated themselves from a choice of just A or B.... we can do it as well, we can send some of those current parties into history like the Whigs

Re: Police and Crime Commissioner - Paul2 (3rd May 2024  12:22:17) @Paul R - well done, and I agree with you. I did the same. I hated it, but I did it. It's important to spoil your vote rather than not vote. Lower turnout is glossed over, but the number of spoiled votes is counted. That's an important number as it represents dissatisfaction.

Re: Police and Crime Commissioner - Local (3rd May 2024  18:05:36) First of all we are talking Police Crime Commissioner here not local or general elections, people's decisions whether or not to vote might be different in each. So ok, you vote because it's important or proves you have an opinion or whatever. You actually validate the election by voting, you are participating in the system. Even a 'spoilt ballot' is participation, you are simply marked down as 'incompetent' because you are deemed to be unable to follow basic instructions, but at least you tried and wanted to participate! There is no 'none of the above' box, much less an 'I dispute the election and vote that no politician is returned here' or 'I demand proportional representation' or anything else. You are offered 2 choices, 'participate' or 'don't participate' the number of spoilt votes barely gets a mention and is of little concern to the winner. In fact a low turnout is slightly more memorable (just), but still statistically irrelevant. Personally as I had absolutely no desire for any particular political parties police 'expert' on the list and doubted whoever I voted for would improve anything much beyond fine words, I chose to exercise my equally important democratic right to choose stay in my house, it is not yet a crime in this country not to vote (unlike some other places)!

Letters To The Editor, Liphook Herald, 114-115 West Street, Farnham, Surrey GU9 7HL 25 November 2012 Sir, Further to your leader in last week’s Liphook Herald, “Loser Slams ‘Dirty, Nasty’ PCC Election” I find it incredulous that Michael Mates, a politician of long standing, campaigner in nine elections, should take issue with the second preference voting system adopted by the whole country in the election of Police and Crime Commissioners. It should be noted that despite David Cameron’s statement that the new Police and Crime Commissioners should not be political appointments, that did not stop him personally delivering a Conservative candidate’s manifestos, and it is also worth noting that, along with other candidates representing political parties, Mr Mates’ election costs were paid by the war chests of the political parties they represented. Mr Mates has called Simon Hayes a ‘turn coat’. Could it be that the Conservative party had already pre-selected Mr Mates as their front runner leaving Mr Hayes with no other choice but to stand as an independent and, as a result, pay his own election costs. The reason why Mr Mates did not get sufficient votes to elect him may have something to do with his advanced age of 78. Even High Court Judges would not be appointed at that age. As for Mr Mates’ allegation of ‘mud slinging’ in your leader and his derogatory comments towards Simon Hayes and other candidates I am put in mind of ‘people in glasshouses’. Sincerely Paul Robinson
