Good luck - so pleased you've decided to adopt a dog that needs to be rehomed.

I'm astounded! Out of curiosity I just had a look at Helping Hounds website and I'm shocked to discover that all of the dogs' profiles that I saw advertised as needing a home have been imported to the UK, mostly from Cyprus.

I've always assumed that potential adoptee dogs were from homes where the owner had died or could no longer look after the dog, or from homes where a dog had had an unplanned litter of puppies or from homes where the dog had been removed by the RSPCA due to having not been properly cared for.

Why on earth are people importing animals from other countries? Surely we have more than enough dogs already here in the UK without bringing in yet more of them?

Quite right, there are enough dogs already in this country needing to be re-homed.

Besides, many dogs from Europe are street or feral, and do not adapt well or easily to this country's expectations of domestication.

We re-homed a dog 18 months ago, of a breed which I have had for over 50 years. At 14 years of age he came with both physical and other issues, mostly separation, he has cost a fortune in veterinary bills, but is now a loving happy contented old lad. Hard work but worth it all.

We adopted a dog from Helping Hounds about 6 months ago and absolutely couldn't fault them. They made the whole process so easy and the follow up care post-adoption has been brilliant. Yes, he was from Cyprus but he is the sweetest, most affectionate dog - he even likes the postman!

All dogs are fully assessed before they are made available for adoption so that the right home can be found. A lot of their dogs are from overseas, but they do also take in dogs that are surrendered by their owners, as well as dogs that have been found by dog wardens.

Prior to adopting from Helping Hounds, we had been looking for eight months without finding a single dog that we were a good match for from the more well-known UK charities - we had contacted maybe six or seven different rescues without luck, so while there are a lot of UK dogs needing homes, it is not always as straightforward as people think to find the right dog.

Helping Hounds made that happen for us and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.
