Second Hand Electric Car Market
- Confused. (2nd Jul 2024 - 15:53:16)
I'm considering what to buy.
In Yahoo news today I read that the average price of a second hand electric car fell 20% last year with the two most popular cars, the Toyota Yaris and Toyota Prius falling 19% and 52% in the last 12 months respectively!
Meanwhile the average second hand price of petrol and diesel cars rose 3.5% in the same period.
Can anyone explain why, I thought we all desperately wanted to drive electric cars and the towns and cities were forcing us out of petrol?
Does this make it a good or bad time to buy a second hand electric car (sorry I can't afford a new one!)

people are finding hassle charging , plus cost of repair tyres higher they are not as good as marketing hype says
petrol diesel are just more convinient
most do not want electric cars and are happy with what they have .
another white elephant like HS2 but EU says this and that , all just a load of manure and waffle

As an electric car driver for the last 9 years, I can safely say I don't regret it.
They are not for everyone though. Realistically you need to be able to charge at home using cheap rate overnight electricity. If you can they are very cheap to run, think of petrol / diesel doing over 100 mpg easily.
A lot of people ignore the maintenance saving costs. Electric cars require little or none. With regenative braking the brake pads and disks last a very long time. No oil changes etc.
Tyre wear is not worse on an electric car - that is FUD as they say.
If you only need a 'local' car, look at Nissan Leafs.
Long distance travel is becoming easier and easier especially as Tesla are opening more sites to any make of EV. Companies like Gridserve are building more and more large charging sites.
The lower second hand prices go the better, as more people can enjoy the cost savings. The only people really against electric cars are the big oil companies who will see their sales and profits drop.
If you meet the criteria to go EV, then do it. It is very unlikely you will regret it.
.......
I believe Octopus offer the best EV tariffs (if you have a smart meter).

Just watch out for battery replacement some cars are getting near to that and it’s so expensive to replace batteries so it renders the car scrap . My friend can’t charge his car from solar panels not enough power so beware. If travel long distance again it’s a problem charging makes a long journey very tedious. Ok for local shopping if you can charge at home.

There again is a lot of negative comments about battery life.
If a battery is failing and it is out of warranty, there are now numerous companies that have the ability to dismantle and replace just the faulty cells. This is substantially cheaper and often far less than you would spend on a second hand engine.
With regard to charging from solar, I was chatting to a man this evening who charges his car from solar. If someone is having a problem it is nothing to do with the electric car, but more to do with the solar set up and maybe the capability of the wall charger - some are designed to divert excess solar energy to the car, rather than back to the grid.
I guess the same level of negative comments existed when the first cars were replacing horses. ICE cars will still exist in the future like horses, just kept for occasional use.
If an electric car suits your life style, then go for it.

- Question 9 (3rd Jul 2024 - 16:27:36)
As Alan states it depends on your journey.
I drive long distances so did not get on with even the Tesla as you have to cut the range by a third if you want radio, aircon, lights particularly in the winter. (God forbid you damage it, it will be in the garage for months awaiting parts)
Had a plug in petrol which was OK, but spends most of its time in the petrol station as the tank was too small. (simply a Benefit in Kind tax dodge)
I would strongly suggest the merc diesel plug in hybrids, you get the best of both worlds. Unlike the BMW where the electric charge only goes one way, it actually increases particularly on long motorway journeys, whilst not spending all its time in a petrol station as it is a diesel.
They are like rocking horse XXXX on the second hand market as most company car drivers purchase them for their 'other halves' when changing, but they are out there.
Until solid state batteries are introduced we are in that interim period for longer distance drivers as range anxiety is still a major concern.
