Re: Lazy lizard cafe - Kelly G (22nd Jul 2024 - 13:54:52) Speaking to the owner and he advised that they just couldn't find the staff. The manager went on maternity and advised that it wouldn't pay for her to return so she's gone on the social which also provides free accommodation. There's clearly something wrong with a system when it's more financially beneficial to not work instead of to work and get rewarded.

It's well known many businesses pay the minimum and expect everything. Times are changing and this way of treating workers won't last.

Re: Lazy lizard cafe - Joe (22nd Jul 2024 - 21:57:55) It sounds as if the owner of the Lazy lizard is in breach of employment law if he refused a worker maternity leave. I hope she had a written contract but I doubt it. The new government are supposedly bringing in laws to give all workers rights like these from day one of employment. It will get even harder for employers if this comes to pass.

Re: Lazy lizard cafe - Jen (23rd Jul 2024 - 10:25:21) Joe, I took "it wouldn't pay" to mean "it would not be worth her while", ie she would be better off financially if claiming benefits rather than returning to work after maternity leave. Perhaps Kelly could clarify what she meant.

Surely there are people willing to do this job, or is this an example of our own citizens being unwilling to do the job. I can bet you 100% anyone of our neighbouring countries citizens would easily take the job and have done a good job, but we hunted them away, foreign workers would have kept it open, local workers can’t be arsed. You can not tell me there isn’t a single unemployed person in Liphook, or nearby unable to manage a cafe!

I don’t want to run my own business, nor would I want to. If you run a business then you should look after your staff no matter the size of the company. Employees matter and so do their rights.

As the owner of the lazy lizard I will give you the facts that it's nobody's business. The shop has now closed because its not financially viable, mind you it's never been because every time it's starts to wipe it's face someone else's decides to open a food shop in the village. Ie cinema ,premier and now the old sweet shop. Now in sure if you ask anyone that has there own business would have quit years ago when making a 20 k a year lose but I believed it could work but my pockets are only so deep and tried for 8 years but cant do it anymore As for paying staff low wages. If they worked 40 hrs a week at minimum wage , that works out just under 24k a year . Thats twice what I've been paying myself because I've been baling out the shop to make sure every wage and bill was paid because I feel everyone deserves to get there money they have worked for and goods delivered. Yes you would have thought and probably are thinking what an idiot for keeping it going but I believed in it but it's just to much now. Yes it looks busy but looks are deceiving especially with so much competition now in a small area with no other shops to venture around. I blame the council for this thinking the change of use will fill more shops . How short shighted are they and will empty more shops.. Now with the new business usage you will see more of these cafes opening and possible closing in the first year. Good luck to all you that thinking it's easy to run a business in these difficult times.

The original poster was wrong to blame the manager who went on maternity leave though for the closure. The change of use by the council though- the Lazy Lizard was formerly an electrical supply shop so change of use was around then to allow it to turn into a cafe in the first place. You cannot change the planning rules to say only one cafe allowed in the area?

Re: Lazy lizard cafe - David (28th Jul 2024 - 08:30:41) Hi Joe I know the shop was a1 use before and I spent a a lot of time money to get it changed to a3 so we could have a coffee shop in its place and back in 2018 you had to fight to get the changed of use because of the town and country planning act didn't want every shop beinng a food out let and they wanted a diversity of shops the keep the small villages and towns alive, but sadly since covid the planning has change to the extent you can have anything in any shop now without having to apply for change of use. Because they don't want empty shops but dont actually care about the business that exists already and thats sad. And it's not to do with business rates because most of the shops in liphook are under the rate value so no rates apply. Not sure what the answer is but it's looks like it's the new normal places will come and go so much quicker now because there all fighting for the same bit of cake. Sadly I think this is going to kill the highstreet completely. I see so many post moaning about all the hairdressers and estate agents and lack of shops welcome to the demise of it all

Now, apologies in advance if I've got this wrong and I'm mistaken, but wasn't there already a cafe/tea room in The Square next to Lloyds before you opened? If that's correct then didn't you do exactly the same to that business as you described above?

The Police, politicians and National Crime Agency (NCA) all warn of the possible link between drug gangs and needing loss-making cash outlets to launder the proceeds of crime.

Re: Lazy lizard cafe - Sam (30th Jul 2024 - 21:41:00) An Albanian/Turkish staff member is exactly what is needed to keep the cafe open, unbelievable there isn’t a single British born person in need of a job to keep the cafe open.. lazy sods Shameful really, the British of the empire days wouldn’t even recognise the British people of today…. Useless, would not take more than 6 Russians armed with just their fists to sack Liphook and take complete control of it. The only people that could stop them are the travellers down the A3 and they aren’t British.

Its clearly important enough for you. Put your money where your mouth is and get on with it. I'm sure; we'll all drop in,..not because to generate any good will which inter alia a cafe to be successful requires is pleasant sensible friendly banter. Good luck with that.

We have always been a separate country even when we joined the common market as it was then that was a good idea to be able to trade with out restrictions not what it became Brussels running our country and so corrupt we are far better out of it . Surly if people would rather be ruled by another country it would be better if they went and lived there and be happy.

Quite a bit more than the figures on the Boris Bus... Not sure what planet your on that things are "better" when factually things are alot worse had we stayed in, all it was, was economic co-operation with the biggest economy in the world and a mild bit of polical standardisation. The UK policital class dare not even mention the word now, instead they talk about budget holes etc and only deal with the damage repair and not the cause.... your taxes are going up beause of it, your services are falling apart because of it. Your local cafe is now closed because of it <------ EU staff would have been happy to fry you an egg We got sucker punched with lies and when swallowed the bait and loved it, hence why the rest of the world are wetting their pants at how utter dumb we are..... If it was that great why hasnt anyone else actually exited? sure there are right wing bubbles here and there but no one, not even marie le pen would want an exit. If anything it was our mistake that has shown them not to exit. At the time of writing there are 8 countries whom want IN to the EU and zero that wish to leave.

Great should have been removed from Great Britain a long time ago!

If all the things you mentioned disappeared in an instant tomorrow like magic the country would still be broke and ruined… therefore your suggestions are pointless.
