Polystyrene Question - AF (4th Sep 2024 - 07:31:47) I recently had a self assembly piece of furniture which i managed to assemble but was left with the packaging. Now the cardboard has gone into the recycle bin, but have 5 pieces of polystyrene left, my wife has told me i can't put it in either bin, are we suggesting i book a slot at the dump for 5 pieces of polystyrene, and if the answer is yes what do we do after the Bordon dump closes.

They should have a tiny little barely decipherable triangle with an obscure letter inside which links to their chemical formula, if you find it and cross reference it with the councils definitive list of which plastics they do and don't currently recycle, it will guide you as to where to put it, green or black, black unlike most other councils being for green waste and green for brown waste. Soon we will have up to 10 more bins, we can't at present because like most councils we're probably nearly bust. So rather than get the wrong plastic in the green bin (sorry I meant black bin) and ruin the entire lorry load, like virtually every other load of recycling in the UK (because most people can't even spell their own names, let alone decipher chemical formulae), and it would have to be sent to the Philippines to be dumped outside someone's village, or into the sea, whichever is cheaper, so you are best off doing what most people do and dumping it in the black bin to be in the safe side. Sorry I mean green bin, green is the ungreen waste, black is green!

I should have checked this first but I just assumed my Wife was right, they normally are and even when wrong just agree it leads to an easier and more harmonious life.

Re: Polystyrene Question - James (8th Sep 2024 - 18:23:37) I remember the new wheelie bins being distributed in the mid 80's to replace the old metal bins. The council chose green to blend into the street scene better. Some years later the recycling system was set up and a different colour was needed, hence they chose black. It's unfortunate but hindsight wasn't available in those days!
