The Kids are Back
- AF (7th Sep 2024 - 02:15:54)

Well i was silly enough to try to drive through liphook at 3:45PM on Friday. You can tell the kids are back at Bohunt.

With pupil numbers at approximately 2000 AF and a growing Liphook population currently at about 8500 the small 'town' centre is an overcrowded pinchpoint a couple of times a day.

And there are obviously the high numbers of through traffic all trying to get around on an outdated roadways infrastructure. An increasing problem that isn't going to end anytime in the near future. Best to avoid travelling by vehicle at the worst times or walk.

Re: The Kids are Back
- Local (7th Sep 2024 - 11:29:21)

Ring roads come to mind. Many many years ago the powers to be were told that they should be investing in ring roads because the volume of traffic through the square was at its maximum.

But the same old chestnut was rolled out "only twice a day" ha ha . The through traffic is horrendous where it comes and goes to your guess is as good as mine but it’s more or less continuous all day and half the night and don’t mention the weekend.

Going back when the 5 ring roads were suggested to be included with building sites the EHDC planning department wasn’t interested we lost out big time. "We know best" brigade won out, they don’t live here. Same goes for BOHUNT Manor the s o s save bohunt manor brigade put the boot into that ring road and infrastructure for liphook.

We have lost all the opportunity’s for infrastructure because of heads in the sand attitude.

Not all of the children are capable of walking due to weight and disability issues.

Re: The Kids are Back
- AF (7th Sep 2024 - 16:27:31)

Yes ring roads are the only answer. We already have some parts, the avenue, tower road and Newtown road just need two more, connect longmoor road with Portsmouth road and Haslemere road with London road.
It will never happen.

Re: The Kids are Back
- Resident (7th Sep 2024 - 18:20:58)

Hang on AF the roads you mentioned are through housing estates the avenue is like the M 25 and very narrow NOT designed for heavy traffic same for the others. We need proper ring roads designed around housing estates but payed for by the developers not using access roads to houses. This could have been achieved if the planning department at EHDC had included it at planning stage. As usual all to late.

No different now than it were fifty years ago, only difference is the A3 through traffic has been replaced by hoards of vehicles with one fat child inside being chauffered to school. It seems just as fashionable now to have an obese child as it is to have one with a never ending choice of mental conditions, both of which never existed in my school fifty years ago.

Where have we gone wrong?

- Local 285 (8th Sep 2024 - 17:44:17)

Could we have a new mensch on mental health amongst us, D, having impressed with his schoolboy analysis back in the days of black and white and analogue!

Seriously though, maybe it wasn't a big issue back then D, because like so many things, we were in the darkness, we also didn't believe so many other things too, like smoking causes lung cancer.

Most scientists and doctors now say they are just at the dawn of understanding the secrets of the most complex and fragile system on earth, the organic brain.

How it's tiny neurological pathways are constantly created, live and die, easily damaged or injured as the fragile balance of water, electricity and nutrients is upset by trauma, chemicals, pollution, medication, genes or a zillion other variables beyond their best interpretations, even Elon Musk couldn't even start to create or recreate our brain.

In my day too, children were left without help in schools who knew next to nothing about child mental health or believed it wasn't a thing.

If the kids doubted each others abilities in my day, we would stand around making noises and pointy finger signs to the sides our our heads at roughly the place we thought our brains might be, in a vain effort to help cure whatever it was. Back then it was ignorance

I wonder why it seems to concern so many of us, others getting help for neurological injuries we can't even see or understand? Is it because, while some brains are opening new pathways and discovering the secrets of post Einstein mechanics or AI, others are still struggling with Aristotle and Newton? It's a knowledge based future and our children's brains are that future, we are lucky to live today, let's make tomorrow even better for them!

- Dave L (8th Sep 2024 - 19:05:05)

Now now er aka KW I’m not to blame for the overweight members of our community or the disabled children who are creating traffic jams in the village centre so no need to be like that!

Re: The Kids are Back
- D (9th Sep 2024 - 09:22:10)

Local, I'm sorry you feel the need to use sarcastic and rude terminology, wouldn't have happend in my "black and white analogue" day. The Nazi's knew smoking caused cancer, it was Hitler who first banned smoking at work, (albeit his own workplace.)

However, your post focuses on child mental illness. This has proliferated since it became socially unacceptable (illegal?) to smack children, as has child crime including, sadly, the increase in child knife crime. What kind of dystopian society is it that instead of smacking a child once to teach them right from wrong, they are doped up to their eyeballs on prescribed medication to control their behaviour?

If, as you say Local, the brains of your children are our future, it don't look too good if they can't function without reliance on prescribed medication.

Gone of subject a bit . Traffic through the square was the thread. It seems that most of the traffic is through traffic coming from bordon area headly road was tailed back to the bridge the other day. Huge amount coming in from the north junction a3 seems to go to Haslemere ridiculous when 2 miles up the road there is a main road into Haslemere. It’s time the people in charge took a long hard look at this huge problem in liphook.

Re: The Kids are Back
- D (9th Sep 2024 - 12:52:50)

You're absolutely right, First Local. The traffic is nowhere near as bad in school holidays though, and no ring road will prevent school traffic.

Re: The Kids are Back
- Joe (9th Sep 2024 - 15:18:00)

This has been looked at many times and the authority who would authorise any highways work would be Hampshire Highways and they concluded that a ring road is not needed. They encourage parents instead to park away from the schools and then walk or walk from home completely. I have driven through the square many times having lived in the area for 40 years plus and have only encountered hold ups at school times.

Re: The Kids are Back
- M (9th Sep 2024 - 16:02:03)

It's the schools that cause the congestion. All summer it's fine, as soon as they go back the peak time congestion occurs.
It was proved by the traffic surveys a couple of years ago, it's primarily local people in there cars taking or collecting their children from the schools in and around Liphook.
The children that walk to and from Bohunt School then cause the traffic to stop in The Square on the various crossings they use.
I to have lived in Liphook over 40 years and it's just a fact of life. Don't try to travel through Liphook at peak times, if you do you'll be stuck in traffic, just as you are in most towns and villages at school time!

Re: The Kids are Back
- First local (9th Sep 2024 - 17:19:24)

Just a thought having lived here over 80 years and seen all that has gone on thousands of houses and very.very poor planning. Working in the square helping lib with the flower beds on a Sunday morning the traffic is continuous from every direction so where are they coming from and going to they all can’t be going to Sainsburys. If the bypass has taken the north south traffic away what has happened to make the square so so busy more than when the a3 came through. Funny old thing when the square was revamped by HCC they said it could possibly be pedestrianised as there would only be local light traffic ha ha they got that wrong as everything else. They call it a conservation area that’s quite laughable when you see the damage traffic is doing sad that nobody cares anymore.

Re: The Kids are Back
- Lorac (12th Sep 2024 - 09:36:26)

Maybe moving the pelican crossing from London road to the zebra crossing in the square would help; at least the kids would have to wait their turn instead of holding up traffic while they amble across. The pelican crossing is of little use where it is at the moment. But, hey ho, it’s spending money to ease situations that creates delays!

Re: The Kids are Back
- Local (12th Sep 2024 - 11:50:13)

Lorca we all said that when it was put in down the Portsmouth road would have been better in the square. But they knew best as usual liphooks residents opinions don’t matter. So much for the neighbourhood plan peoples opinion useless.
