The future of Liphook.uk - Editor (20th Sep 2024  11:37:25) After various comments on another thread, I need to know if the general feeling is that TalkBack should be closed down. This is a hobby site, so shutting down TalkBack is not an issue. In fact it would save me a substantial amount of time each day. If you want it to continue, what subjects should not be accepted, Brexit, Trump, homelessness, dog mess etc ? Should I only accept items for sale, for instance?

Pete and D, may I suggest you move along and find something else to do with your time. This site has been going for years and is beneficial to the village. You appear to not like free speech and play the victim card when you don't like the tone of the discussion. Sam needs to grow up and stop throwing his dummy out of the pram. We get that he is angry about brexit, tough, many more are happy about it. This is how democracy works. Unfortunately there seems to be a push to stop democracy here and in other countries. Even our village is tainted by it. Discussions are healthy but maybe some people need to learn the art of it to participate more coherently. As for the Editor, keep going , you have done a sterling job over the years. Don't let the moaners ruin this website.

I like the posts about items for sale, events in the village etc. and see this forum as the correct place for these. I am personally very bored with the posts where people argue about politics and other issues which are not related to the subject title. There is X/Twitter for that. This should be about local issues and news. Thank you for running the site for so long!

I personally don’t go on any other local sites as Talkback meets my needs. I find it great for recommendations, selling the odd item, publishing local events and finding out about other events. Some of the conversations do get out of hand but you don’t have to read them! I would be sorry to see Talkback go.

Would agree with the other sentiments here - items for sale, local happenings, people looking for or offering work, discussions about the local area - these are all great and Talkback is my go-to a lot of the time. But I fully agree with Caroline, the political discussions just seem odd and inflammatory to me, and they aren't relevant to Liphook most of the time. We get enough of that through the news and social media anyway, I'd like to think of this place as an oasis of its own.

Re: The future of Liphook.uk - anon (20th Sep 2024  15:58:23) we’re always telling children about the consequences of cyber-bullying, and in this way i think a lot of the nasty comments posted on this community-based platform demonstrate hypocrisy in this context. since it evidently is the minority making it an uncomfortable, toxic environment for the majority, hopefully this is a bit of a wakeup call for absolutely everyone to just be a bit more mindful about how we express our views.

This website is were I get my local news from and a daily chuckle to myself. Yes there has been a marked increase in trolling and click bate topics, but is that simply an outcome of social media development and peoples frustration. You cannot control the majority of the content, or the attitude of people using the site or the feedback on a 'different stream'. It is a credit to you that it is as popular as it is and would be a great loss to the community. Whether it be thinly vailed developers trying to convince us of their next build or activist advising us of an application hidden in a planning meeting some where, the site obviously has value. Would agree with Caroline, if we could keep to local politics and local issues/ events and of course selling things, we can still have steamy content. Many thanks for your efforts, one of the silent majority.

A great site for Items for Sale, Local Events, New Business start ups, and a very good way to get recommendations for local trades people, services. I think there is also room for comment on local environment issues, crime, and all the things that effect our daily live as part of the community. No politics, religion, personal agendas, or similar. The old adage - The Editors Decision Is Final. Thank your endeavors.

Just about every comment on Talkback is fact based and it's good to see people raising topics which are sometime not always talked about in company in case some "Snowflake" gets offended! There's been some lively debate about homelessness, welfare lay abouts, families with several dads free loading off the state, planning applications and of course general chatter. Lets keep it going and keep people honest!

Re: The future of Liphook.uk - Trevor Maroney (20th Sep 2024  20:38:24) Unless and until the posters declare their real (full name) it is hard to know who and what to trust in its current format. I have no problems with Nextdoor where poster are required to disclose their full identity. When I try to find out from City Fibre, which has a multi-million pound contract with the government to provide fibre-optic cabling in Hampshire for use by all broadband providers, why independent contractors are being allowed to lay cabling for their own use i.e., a monopoly on access to fast broadband and/or, it has been claimed, roads being dug up more than once by competitors, I am unable to find sufficient supporting evidence on Talkback. City Fibre's initial response was that they know nothing about Swish Fibre (now Cuckoo), and now they are just ignoring questions. HCC deny any responsibility for authorising such work as it's a contract let by the previous government. It would, therefore, seem that this large City Fibre contract is not being policed - controled or monitored by organisation. I would therefore value a more open and honest postings on a revised and monitored Talkback. Thank you. Trevor

I really value the site as I have no wish to join Facebook. I use it for local news and events and have also sold / rehomed several items (we are in the process of downsizing). I would agree that political comments would be better elsewhere (or possibly contained within a sub-forum?).

It's also a great resource for local news - the bedrock of journalism. Please keep going and thank you for all your hard work. Thea

Me playing the victim? I engaged in no correspondence in the thread the editor refers to so I think you're talking out of your arse over that. My last involvement on this website was a most informative and enjoyable correspondence on electric cars. As the editor says, he owns this website so it is up to him what does and does not get shown. I accept that as a condition of corresponding on this site but it's not my idea of free speech. I think your idea of free speech is anyone who agrees with you. As you suggest, I'm now off to find something better to do with my time. 😀

The only problem I have is there seems to be too much derogatory content of individual posters allowed.

Here's my take: There are those who want to use 'real' names for various reasons, perhaps I'm an extrovert as should you be; it's not 'manly' to 'hide' behind a username; I can't trust you unless I know who you are; I want to know who you are; come on tell us who you are...etc.. Then there are those who like to use a username, for their reasons (ie: I'm not such an extrovert; I don't care if it's manly or not, because you don't know me anyway; I don't particularly want to bump into you in Sainsbury's and have a row about our views on parking; I don't particularly want to bump into you in real life at all, not with your views:) etc. As for what should be on the site, personally I get a little bored with people losing their bloomin animals every 5 minutes or setting up cake sales in the community spaces, however, if you keep losing your wolfhound or pet rabbit or the highlight of your week is the jamboree, then I understand why you value these topics and I defend your right to post and read these articles and get Sugar Nut or Floppy Ears back! I understand that a community group is stronger for embracing a wide range of views, needs, interests ,age groups etc. But I, as well as coming here to hear the village news and gossip, really enjoy a bit banter on the big issues of the day, however 'out there' some views or concerns may sound to us, which I might not get to read if everyone had to admit that they were really the bank manager or the lady who sells pet food or whatever, a large number of us may decide to just stick to platitudes or safe posts about flowerbeds or cake sales on the village green and the delightful verbal intercourse between us would become sterile. Please, let's continue to embrace the Sam1's, Sam 2's, the D's, Residents, Locals 4,5 and 6 and 7's, er and of course the Bearded Peoples, surely there is room for them alongside the Dave Lamberts and Trevor Maroney's, tuning into Liphook Talkback for many people is all a brief escape from the tedium of what may, or may not have been a challenging day, week or year for them, if you don't like a post, just roll on. Ed you may well provide a service to the wellbeing and mental health of a lot of housebound residents I hope people understand and Talkback continues pretty much as it is, all the real issues that matter to any of us, of minority or global importance can continue to be debated and of course resolved on here! Thank you PS and yes, I've been told off for waffling, usually on this site:)
