Terrible parking, Huron Drive
- C (22nd Sep 2024 - 12:35:54)

I realise this is a hyper-local problem but is anyone else concerned about the number of cars parked at the start of Huron Drive?

This end of the road is a blind curve and cars are parking bumper to bumper along one side meaning that cars can only drive on the other side and cannot see if anything is coming the other way, people also drive too fast here, especially delivery vans. Walking along here, I have seen many close calls.

This is much worse out of office hours so I think this must be residents rather than commuters. Could yellow lines be added just on this curved section? Please please park on your own drives and ask your visitors to park elsewhere.

Just the same at the longmoor road end of the avenue. Residents parking on the pavement opposite other parked vehicles making very narrow it’s getting worse think an emergency vehicle would not be able to get through. These houses weren’t meant for two three and four cars to a house. It’s mad buying a house with no parking when you have that many vehicles. And it seems more and more vans parked on the road the avenue is a very small road serving a housing estate and two schools it’s being used as a rat run to avoid the square which it wasn’t meant for it’s time a restriction was imposed.

The Avenue is a rat run and some restrictions would be a good idea. The problem at the Longmoor Road end has been exacerbated though by one particular house that is being used as an HMO with numerous residents being delivery drivers and therefore often park up 3 or 4 very large vans near the junction and often on the double yellows. The landlord has been advised but he doesn’t care! Problem has eased further down though since one family with their 4 vehicles have moved (to the Sainsbury’s estate I believe??) The increased number of vans is definitely a problem and I suspect legislation for existing and planning restrictions for new estates will be proposed

@C: it's because one house has been covertly turned into flats - that's where all the cars come from

Re: Terrible parking, Huron Drive

BTW - we also have people living in 2 camper vans now regularly parked up at Sainsburys

Some people will say this isn't a problem

But when the larger van moves, the stink from the kerb and hedging next to it is vile. I don't believe they discharge black water there (I've seen the van in Midhurst, so it gets around) - but grey water, probably as I've seen run-off water (lots) on the ground when it's not there.

A good question would be - why are there people living in camper vans, and who owns them (I believe someone local, very local!).

@Paul2: If one of the large houses in Huron Drive has been converted, that would explain the increase in cars.

Any District Councillors reading this, is this permitted?

Re camper vans such as the one permanently at Sainsburys, is this ok, acceptable? If you say yes, what if we double, treble, or tenfold the number of people parking these things in Liphook 'legally' and we put one outside of your living room window on a daily basis? Do you still think it's ok then?

The large camper mobile home does move on a regular basis so he/she is possibly taking the folk who are living in it to work somewhere. He possibly bases it there as it is near a convenient food source and lavatory facilities.

I have seen that big camper parked up by the Canadian Memorial bridge London Rd. He is either connected some how to the house next to the river with the dog noisy dog kennels or it’s just a handy water source. Strange place to live but years ago another caravaner called John ( Generator John) lived in a tiny little caravan with his driveway tarmac workforce. We called him generator John as he ran his noisy generator very late at night. Noise late at night,, rubbish , beer cans and Sainsbury’s bags blowing in the wind. All Joys of urban caravan club.

It’s time our local council informed the police and EHDC . They are quick enough to slap parking fines on when you park in the wrong place. It’s illegal to live in a vehicle on the street sainsburys is open to the public so it must be illegal to live in the car park. If it’s on the entrance to the loading area then it’s definitely illegal because that is public highway. Why is it that the authorities turn a blind eye to offending people but come down hard on local inhabitants.

Re: Terrible parking, Huron Drive
- C (26th Sep 2024 - 15:51:09)

Re the camper vans - don’t Sainsbury’s own this land? Surely they have not given permission?

Re: Terrible parking, Huron Drive
- er (26th Sep 2024 - 17:48:09)

Not being a camping vanner, an HMO Lord or a Huron drive parker I'm not directly affected.

But as a motorist I believe it matters not what house you bought, how many vehicles you own or what you do with them, if they are road legal you have as much right to park them on the road as the next guy, legally speaking, anything else is an emotional response.

You can lawfully sleep in your car or van too, unless there are clear and lawfully signed restrictions and as long as you are lawfully allowed to be in the UK without restrictions.

Beyond that, evidence of alleged wrongdoing requires proof, the will or resources to prosecute and if there is littering or illegal parking or environmental hazard there is a place to report all or any of these concerns, I'm not sure even the Editor of TalkBack can remedy them here!

PS Sainsbury's I believe, whilst a highway for the RTA is nonetheless private property and any parking restrictions are a matter for them to enforce as per their signage or other enforcement, not the council or police.

I agree road legal vehicles can be legitimately parked on the road.

My point was about parking on a bend in the road which means that approaching vehicles have to drive on the wrong side of the road when the drivers cannot see whether anything is coming the other way.

This is dangerous and contrary to the Highway Code “You MUST NOT leave your vehicle or trailer in a dangerous position or where it causes any unnecessary obstruction of the road”.

Re: Terrible parking, Huron Drive
- Paul2 (27th Sep 2024 - 11:59:22)

ER - no-one here is having an emotional response, this is all based on fact.

The camper van is causing an issue for large trucks accessing, turning and queuing at Sainsburys. But that's for them to deal with.

When it moves away, there is a foul stink in the hedging and evidence of water released on the ground. There is litter building in the same hedge.

People work under (yes, under) the camper occasionally.

The occupants hide themselves away, and when they emerge they are nearly always wearing hoodies pulled over their faces.

Again, all facts and things I've personally seen (and have evidence of).

So nothing emotional.

Their actions literally don't pass the sniff test.

Re: Terrible parking, Huron Drive
- Paul2 (27th Sep 2024 - 12:01:54)

And to add - the red and black hatchback cars are likely also owned by and left there to create parking space for the larger camper. They don't move.

Someone is going to a lot of trouble to make certain they can park - and live - there.

The silver Transit van that's been illegally converted to a camper van (it's taxed and insured as a commercial vehicle, not a camper) is also being used for living in.

Something is up.

Re: Terrible parking, Huron Drive
- Local (27th Sep 2024 - 15:54:35)

So Paul 2 why don’t you report this to the police if they are causing a hazard and dumping rubbish a waste water the police should be informed. It’s illegal to dump waste water because it causes pollution. And also why hasn’t someone reported it to sainsburys head office.

Re: Terrible parking, Huron Drive
- Paul2 (27th Sep 2024 - 18:07:11)

Local - I have, to both. Shouldn't be so presumptuous!

Re: Terrible parking, Huron Drive
- Local (29th Sep 2024 - 10:12:39)

Sorry Paul 2 but you didn’t mention you had reported it all to the appropriate authorities. You have a lot of information and research which would help the police.

Re: Terrible parking, Huron Drive
- Paul2 (29th Sep 2024 - 17:13:08)

Local - I was being discrete. Hopefully you will also inform the Police and local authorities, as the more people that report these issues the better.

As the Police actually told me when I reported it (and I quote) 'the squeaking wheel gets the most oil".

Interestingly the camper and the small red hatchback moved over the weekend. I believe their owner keeps an eye on Talkback. I'm aware they also were asked not to park another minibus that appeared at Sainsburys for a few weeks back in summer (but it had a logo on it, which meant their client wasn't happy when they found out where it was being stored overnight).

Big camper van is back at Sainsbury’s as of yesterday.

Re: Terrible parking, Huron Drive
- Local (2nd Oct 2024 - 13:25:12)

Just wondering what did Sainsburys say about it . Yes it’s back looks as it’s on Sainsburys property that’s an access road to their warehouse but open to the public so a grey area if Sainsburys are employing the owners they are in trouble having them living on site without permission.
