City Fibre - Hampshire - Trevor Maroney (23rd Sep 2024 - 15:04:00) When I try to find out from City Fibre, which has a multi-million pound contract with the government to provide fibre-optic cabling in Hampshire for use by all broadband providers, why independent contractors are being allowed to lay cabling for their own use i.e., a monopoly on access to fast broadband and/or, it has been claimed, roads being dug up more than once by competitors, I am unable to find sufficient supporting evidence on Talkback. City Fibre's initial response was that they know nothing about Swish Fibre (now Cuckoo), and now they are just ignoring questions. HCC deny any responsibility for authorising such work as it's a contract let by the previous government. It would, therefore, seem that this large City Fibre contract is not being policed - controled or monitored by organisation.

Re: City Fibre - Hampshire - Richard (23rd Sep 2024 - 15:07:15) This item was about broadband and poles commonslibrary.parliament.uk/broadband-companies-and-telegraph-poles But reading further into this, how a company deploys infrastructure is down to them, and there is no provison (except with BT Openreach) to enforce shared infrastructure. May companies may take a view that is it commercially more viable not to enter into agreements with other providers I am not sure who would be expected to provide oversight on what are commercial contracts between the company speculating that if they spend the money on fibre links, that they will recoup it. Personally, I like the idea of competition in infrastructure. It tends to drive down prices, and keep service levels up.

Re: City Fibre - Hampshire - Trevor Maroney (23rd Sep 2024 - 15:48:59) Thank you Richard ? for this information and, presumably, the editor for seperating my broadband example from my response on the continuation of Talkback question. I perhaps should add that the contract for delivery of superfast broadband in rural areas was won by City Fibre and covers Hampshire and 2 other counties. On offer was a £380 million investment by the (then) Tory government to which City Fibre added a further £170 million: which may, or may no, have helped in securing the contract. Since this is clearly tax payers money I feel that the local rural commuities should be seeing some benefits by now. So far all I have seen and heard about, locally, is Swish Fibre's monopoly and one street with 2 sets of trenches for fibre optic cabling. Presumably there will be more before City Fibre starts delivering. Trevor
