No cash machines available in Liphook
- Carol Watson (9th Nov 2024 - 10:49:24)

We went to Sainsbury’s to get cash from their ATM but it was not working, and had not been for several days; my husband thinking it had been repaired. Went to the co-op to use theirs but they had shut theirs down. So nowhere for cash in Liphook until Sainsbury’s repair takes effect. We worry that they are considering closing theirs; too much bother to maintain it!? So for cash it is necessary to go to Haslemere or Petersfield, and god help anyone who no longer drives and is in need of cash urgently. Quick enough to install money-making Argos but dilatory in repairing a much-used and needed ATM. Or are we all now supposed to use cards for items of tiny amounts? Of course so many people now use smart phones for shopping but not everyone has smart phones.

This is definitely an issue although during post office hours most people (depending on who you bank with) are able to withdraw cash at the post office counter in the coop I believe so that's worth a try. I think the hours are the same as the coop opening times.

The convenience store in Headley road has an atm, but they charge a fee.

Problem is some people may have taken the signs 'Free Cash Withdrawal Here' a bit too literally, plus shops aren't so keen to lose their front walls, that and the ease of plastic of course, but when plastic is misused it's the banks that lose out!

Hi Carol, Late September 2024 Sainsbury's announced that they were selling their ATM business (around 1370 cash machines) to Note machine, who will assume ownership & management of the ATM's. The deal is expected to be finalised by May 2025. Under the agreement terms, all ATM's will remain in their current positions & continue to be free. This follows selling much of their banking business to NatWest in June, part of it's phased withdrawal from its banking operations, in order to reduce costs & focus on its retail business.

As a fan of cash it is an issue. Perhaps people should keep a smallish stock of cash at home.
I have some in my home which has proved useful in the past, just a few days ago my wife has had to cancel her credit card due to a scam and is waiting for a new one, in the meantime if she needs to make any purchases we have the cash available.

There’s something very alarming about anyone who operates with cash these days, only the homeless and people trying to avoid paying their fair amount of tax use cash. Even the charity workers collecting for Shelter use contactless. Maybe a little less tax avoidance and your need for cash will be eliminated.

Well said Rupert you conforming good little citizen.

If people earn their own money it belongs to them and they are free to use it how they wish and have it in whatever legal tender they want, cashless societies are under the most control, with every exchange recorded.

Rupurt,
I don’t need shelter as I have a nice size house and a servant. I also have a £20000 platinum card which I use twice a year to get my cash and pay the servant. To be honest I find plastic to be quite boring.

Rupert

I really, really, really hope the russian or chinese hackers get into the credit card system and we have to use cash for a couple of weeks, i'll be fine, you and your cashless friends will be stuck.

Ah, yes Jak, I could tell from the way you pronounced “platinum” with that impeccable flair. You simply radiate refinement—why, it’s practically blinding. I’m sure all those summers in the south of France and those in-depth conversations about imported cheeses have given you such a unique perspective on life. Please, do go on and educate us about the proper way to hold a teacup or whatever it is the rest of us have been doing wrong.

Rupurt,
Just getting my landing net, that bite almost broke the rod!!

This is going to develop into a serious problem and very soon the fine men of Liphook will be ridiculed the county over.

Given that the only male barbers in Liphook are Turkish, and that they ONLY take cash, I fear our good men-folk will all look like Rasputin or seventies-throwbacks come January.

Hi Rupert
Not everyone using cash is avoiding taxes etc Believe me I have paid my taxes all my life. I don't have a fancy phone that takes apps - Really don't trust online banking ,which has been proven with money vanishing form accounts & scamming people is just so easy with credit cards & online business. It is also much easier for people to budget using cash - when it's gone it's gone - no expensive interest rates either.
