Bohunt secondary and Bohunt Sixth Form
- Da ~ (20th Nov 2024 - 08:03:04)

Hi everyone,

We are moving into the area at the end of the academic year and we have children in primary and secondary. I have a few questions please for this community:

1. Are Bohunt Secondary and Bohunt Sixth Form quite separate?

2. I assume that many students from other secondary schools join Bohunt Sixth Form (not just Bohunt GCSEs students)? My eldest would join without knowing anyone, would this be unusual / problematic?

3. What would be your pros and cons for choosing Bohunt Secondary vs Woolmer Hill if you had the option? For instance, would it be more logical to go to Bohunt all the way through because of friendships and for continuity?

3. I know the schools are good in the area and have great results. Which is best for somewhat shy and academic type children?

Many thanks

You will need to filter the replies to this query as historically any Bohunt thread on Talkback can provoke quite extreme responses! Also consider that there are no id requirements to contribute so quite often you will get mischievous kids adding quite shocking feedback. I think you will not find much help here, Liphook Community Page on Facebook will probably give you more balance.

From my own experience with two children it was quite mixed. I do think if your child is quite academic and studious they will thrive.

I thought the sixth form was built after the school leaving age was raised to eighteen, so presumably all places will be taken by last year's fifth formers. Previous to this those wishing to do so went to Alton College. Best to ask the school. I was at Bohunt in the seventies, damn good school. Only school round here that didn't use the cane.

Thank you, I appreciate the feedback. Yes, they are studious, which is why I would like to give them an environment where they continue thriving.

I will remember the cautious advice on anonymity and filtering!

Although Bohunt and the primary schools in Liphook ARE good, I understand they are full so if you are moving here from out of area with children already at school they may not get places, other than during the usual admission rounds.

The sixth form is a separate building but on the same site. My son is currently in Year 13 and only a fairly small cohort carried on from Bohunt main school into the sixth form that year. The majority go to Godalming College. He has made good friends with a few children who came in from other schools though so I’m sure that wouldn’t be a problem for your eldest. The current Year 12 is much larger so I imagine that doesn’t leave many spaces for children coming from other schools. It was built to be a small sixth form with all the benefits that enjoys such as small class sizes. It is a great sixth form with a fantastic head teacher and brilliant teachers. My son has been very happy there. My daughter is in Year 11 and has chosen to carry on into the sixth form as well. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Bohunt for your children’s secondary and sixth form journeys.
And hoping you’re very happy with your move to Liphook. It’s a lovely place to live, with mainly lovely people, though if you were to glance through some of the ridiculous opinions and attitudes on this site you’d be forgiven for thinking otherwise!

D - Getting your dates mixed up. The school wasn't built in the 1970's. It officially opened in September 1978 but the first intake was bussed to temporary classrooms in Longmoor army camp and entered the school in January 1979.

You were right about the cane, the headmaster was Mr Leach who didn't agree with it. That was when the school had a decent headmaster.

Shy and studious? Woolmer Hill

AF, I am not getting my dates mixed up. I KNOW I WAS THERE!

AF, despite being in use from January of that year, it didn't officially open until 1979, not 1978 as you claim. Only A Block had been built, and the rest of the school was built gradually over all the five years I was there and wasn't even finished when I left. There was a lavish opening ceremony with Shirley Williams, education secretary in James Callaghan's Labour government who was responsible for the school coming about. Later in 1979, BBC Radio 4 broadcast an episode of "Any Questions" hosted by David Frost if I remember. Guess what, I WAS THERE AS WELL!

D - As the school was opened for pupils in September 1978 but not finished so pupils went to Longmoor for the first term and pupils actually went into the school in January 1979.
So you may have been in the first intake and spent 1 year in the school in 1979 but you claim you went to the school in the seventies which is clearly incorrect.
My brother was among the first intake and I was in the fifth intake which took the school up to the full five year range of pupils.

Hi Sam, thank you for the detailed feedback, super helpful! I called the school and they also provided valuable responses. Do you know what the reasons were to go to Godalming College? It seems like a great College too, but I would have thought that for this age group you would want to reduce commute time and stay close to home/friends.

Hi Jo, thanks for you view on Woolmer Hill, would you say that this is because it is a smaller school, or do you see other pros for the shy/academic type? My children are currently in a big school so seem OK with that (so long as they have their close friends, I think it does not matter to them) – it may be because their current school is a “kind” school with a strong community feel.
