Arla farms and Bovaer use.
- AR (30th Nov 2024 - 13:48:16)

So Arla Farms are trialling Bill Gate's Bovaer to be given in cattle feed; to stop them farting. There are a huge amount of products that will be affected. All dairy produce including Anchor and Lurpak butter.
Maybe local farmers could reassure people by stating whether or not they will be doing this.
Not sure about Sainsburys own milk, but going organic may be the way to go at the moment.
Now we know why Bill Gates was meeting Starmer at No 10

Not heard of this new feed but it must have been tested to ensure its safe. We need to reduce the cow farts due to climate change, now if you're not keen on this additive the way to go is not organic as those cows will be farting but go vegan. Just to be clear I wont be going vegan I'll be having dairy from the non farting cows.

A lot of misinformation here. Bill Gates is NOT linked to Bovaer, he has funded research on a different anti-farting additive called Rumin8. Bovaer is digested by the cow and does NOT pass into the milk

Having just listened to Farming Today on the BBC this was discussed and it appears only a tiny per cent of farmers are interested to use this as it is incredibly expensive with no immediate obvious benefit to farmers only benefits the planet.

It is a fact that Bill Gates is now the largest private landowner of farms in the USA, and therefore he has significant influence over a number of chemical companies working on dairy feed additives.

The OP is correct about Arla products.

Simple message is be informed as to what's going into your food without your consent. Buy local where you can, and support British farmers (who will happily tell you if their produce has chemical additives or not).

Cadbury chocolate is now included in using farms that use Bovaer.
Rumin8 is a completely different compound but I am not sure if farmers are using this product.
Bill Gates is involved with promoting this product though.
Anything that is ingested, human or animal crosses into milk, hence alcohol and medicines should not be used during pregnancy.
Bovaer is an irritant and when using it farmers have to wear protective garments.

Bovaer® 10
(3-Nitrooxypropanol)
For further manufacture of feed for reduction of methane gas emissions per pound of dry matter intake in lactating
dairy cows.
GUARANTEED ANALYSIS:
3-nitrooxypropanol, minimum……………………………………………10% (w/w)
Silicon dioxide, maximum……………………………………………………60% (w/w)
Ingredients: Silicon dioxide, propylene glycol, 3-nitrooxypropanol
Directions for Use:
Thoroughly mix Bovaer 10 into a total mixed ration at 540-720 g/ton of complete feed (100% dry matter basis) to
provide 27.2-36.3 mg 3-nitrooxypropanol per pound (60-80 mg per kilogram) of dry matter intake. Bovaer 10 can be
incorporated into a premix then included in the total mixed ration to ensure adequate uniformity.
Feed continuously to lactating dairy cows. Effectiveness was demonstrated in a total mixed ration containing 27.3-
31.8% neutral detergent fiber and 5.2-5.8% crude fat. Dietary factors influence effectiveness, and feeding diets
outside of these ranges may result in reduced effectiveness.
Data supporting effectiveness has been evaluated when fed for no more than 105 days. Methane gas emissions
were measured for individual animals. Data were not evaluated at the herd, farm, or larger scale. Data were not
evaluated for other gas emissions. Milk production, feed efficiency, and milk solids have not been evaluated.
Caution:
Do not feed undiluted. For use in feed for lactating dairy cows only. Not for use in dry dairy cows, bulls,
replacement heifers or bulls, growing cattle, or other ruminant species because safety and effectiveness have not
been evaluated in these animals. Silicon dioxide from all sources cannot exceed 2 percent by weight of the
complete feed.
A decrease in dry matter intake may be observed in some animals.
Warning:
Not for human use. Caution should be exercised when handling this product. 3-nitrooxypropanol may damage male
fertility and reproductive organs, is potentially harmful when inhaled, and is a skin and eye irritant. Personal
protective gear, including eye wear, a dust mask, and impervious gloves, should be worn when handling this
product. Operators should wash hands after handling. If accidental eye exposure occurs, rinse eyes thoroughly with
water. The safety data sheet contains more detailed occupational safety information.
To report suspected adverse reactions, contact Elanco US Inc. at 1-800-428-4441 or FDA at
https://www.safetyreporting.hhs.gov/.
Best Used By: 36 months after the date of manufacture
Storage Information: Store in a dry location at temperatures below 25°C (77°F). Keep package closed

All companies who use this should be labeling their goods, which doesn't appear to be happening. Then you have the choice to decide if you want to ingest the milk and butter.
It isn't the first time a product has been used that causes problems.

Please can the experts here tell us what percentage of uk emissions are the result of cow farts.. and further what is the percentage of global emissions.

Oh dear even M&S are getting in on the act !

Lurpak is getting a lot of grief as well.

Re: Arla farms and Bovaer use.
- Paul2 (3rd Dec 2024 - 14:58:38)

@Pete - while not exactly what you asked, there is an analogy in the media at the moment that's interesting.

Firstly, all governments and agencies have worked hard to tell YOU that YOU are PERSONALLY responsible for climate change. But you're not.

Secondly, the analogy. If you can picture a huge TV screen made up of millions of individual pixels representing the total amount of CO2 produced annually across the planet. If the UK went fully net zero, it's the equivalent of 1 single pixel.

The food system is broken. Supermarkets full of UPF - food I don’t trust. Watch Eddie Abbew and Chris van Tulleken and inform yourselves. Fresh food. Make it yourself.

Re: Arla farms and Bovaer use.
- Paul2 (4th Dec 2024 - 08:59:04)

The food system we have is the one we've asked for - convenience. As Dr Van T has pointed out, many of the food conglomerate's were bought up by tobacco companies as the cigarette business declined. These companies know how to market and make their products addictive.

And that's what has happened with the UPF's [ultra-processed foods] in our food system. Cheap, convenient, industrial, unhealthy. There is evidence that certain UPFs (and micro plastics) act as endocrine disruptors, interfering with hormone function. Some of those chemicals mimic estrogen and disrupt other hormonal functions. In my day job I am seeing more young people presenting earlier with cancer, and the research is now backing this causal link.

Take Sainsburys as an example. The first 2 aisles inside the door are fresh fruit and veg. The rest of the 20-odd aisles (leaving out non-food) are literally floor-to-ceiling full of UPFs.

Buy local, buy seasonal. Simple really.

BREAKING: UK Government 'commits' to giving ALL cows in England, Bovaer, the controversial feed, by 2030

Are they trying to get rid of farmers ? This is so wrong to impose this on them. The ingredients are toxic and we have a right not to be exposed to it. The government want us to stop eating meat and dairy and this is a sure fired way to do it and send farmers out of business.
There is also a case of mad cow in Scotland. The lunatics running the country need to go.

Re: Arla farms and Bovaer use.

Genuinely troubled by the 2030 enforcement of any food additive, particularly 3-NOP, in the head-long pursuit for Net Zero zealotry.
