Labour Surprise
- AF (7th Dec 2024 - 15:30:46)
Well I suppose it had to happen eventually, Comrade Starmer and his followers have finally announced they will do something they promised in their manifesto, which is to nationalise the railways starting with South West Railways in May which is of course the one we use.
But just to re assure you all, we will have the same staff, same trains, same stations, same tracks. Prices will continue to rise, services will not be more frequent.
Not sure how this will improve things.

Well at the very least privatisation removes the hundreds of millions in dividends and profits to shareholders and fat cats. The Ferrari show rooms will be gutted about it but perhaps all that capital can be spent on improvements and not private jets.

Well I hope the “state ownership’ works better than last time! I agree that the privatised model hasn’t worked but going backwards probably will not either. This country really is in a rut! Bouncing between Labour and Tory isn’t working, we need a national reboot but I don’t know who will provide it (definitely not Farage/Reform or the Liberals either!)

Well Parliament is going to debate "call a general election" after the petition reaches over 100,000 on January 6th if anyone is interested.
Whilst it is easy for the government to put out a response repeating what was said by Starmer a couple of days ago The Petitions Committee can gather further evidence and press the government for action.
Before you all get on your soap boxes at least it's something and better than just tittle tattling on here, hope you've signed it, otherwise it's 5 years of hell.
For those of us that have been around for a while we knew what labour were capable of,agree with Ian we need a reboot and unsure who is competent and respectful enough to undertake that.

Sadly Susie however many people sign up to this petition it will not change the government as the Labour Party are not going to call for a General Election. That would be political suicide. This Government is not a minority one as is the case in France and Starmer has a huge majority. Starmer could be toppled if enough of his own backbenchers and possibly some of his Cabinet revolted, although this is highly unlikely. In the event of this very unlikely scenario happening a new Leader of the Labour Party would be chosen, but the Labour Party would still be in power. In very extreme circumstances Parliament can be dissolved by the King on the Prime Minister's request and I cannot see Starmer requesting that.

Well I think this labour government have won first prize for bringing the country to its knees in record time. Trouble is it’s going to get worse if they can do that in six months where are we going to be in another three years. Over run with illegal migration no jobs no money no anything great to look forward to . Have a lovely Christmas it maybe your last one .

@ not surprised. A record? I think not. Liz and Kwasi hold that record for trashing the economy in 24 hours on 3 September 2022!

I think that as labour have only been in power a comparably short while - all the problems mentioned above ( which have been there for a few years anyway under Tory rule ) need a chance to to be sorted out, no government has a magic wand and they did have a huge majority to win that power.
